I have noticed in recent years that even if a tire wears down evenly they will get extremely noisey at about half way. It's a billion dollar business. I worked at a tire/auto shop for 4 years

I'm having that exact problem of inner tire wear & cupping - but it is only happening on front driver side...
Could it still just be tire only problem or is it less likely as the wear is only only present on one side (the tires are winter tires, so definitely soft).

great video. I first heard noises after a cold snow storm, thought it to be a wheel bearing, or brakes. took to a auto shop, was told the shocks where bad and tires where wearing bad. i changes the shocks, but still i hear the rhythmic noise (like a soft chop/ thump). My question is, do the tires need immediate change now or will they wear down in time?

Tire separation and blistering are also a concern. I've seen "NEW" tire blister and separate pretty early in their life especially on tires that have been sitting in a warehouse for years before installation. Make sure to check the date codes on the tires carefully. Try not to buy "New" tires that are over 5 years old.

I am, thanks. But it was like you see on NASCAR when they lose a right front and turn right, hard.... only in a dually 4x4 on the interstate... Ever seen a dually at 70 mph with 3 wheels in the air, 2 in the dirt and one gone? Fortunately down here in Mississippi I was at a spot with a big wide grassy shallow ditch/shoulder and didn't hit anything. But I can still show you the skid marks.... on my seat. They were almost new tires, but defective. Bought 6 and 5 of them separated, shed the tread, or exploded before they got old. Cooper brand. I then got to talking with an engineer friend who was familiar with Cooper's manufacturing techniques, and let's just say you couldn't give me any more of them.

Thanks for your time and making things easier to comprehend I know that a 93 T bird is going to be hard to find the issue what I can say is that it is not the tires and this thumping sensation and noise from the rear passenger side can't hear it until car has been city stop and go for about two miles and taking a chance on free way it was loudest and continue to get loud when I was steadily pace but would stop if I let off the gas as I got almost home I noticed it wasn't as bad or loud. The car has been stored under car port for almost year and half before I bought it
The first thing done brake inspection informed me that I have to do a break fluid contaminated flushing and break pads are still OK but discontinued. can you please let me know what you think about this and what would you start looking at if you want to ask about anything else let me know Anu time.. thank you very much for your time and consideration

Amazing how these new tires are rated at 60,000 miles, but realistically they wear out half way and produced the road noise. My Lexus has only 35,000 miles (still the OEM Michelin tires) and I'm starting to hear these "woosh woosh" sound when I let go of the accelerator. Rotating them doesn't seem to help. Now I'm going to try feeling them to see if cupping is the problem.

I’m a commercial vehicle mechanic with many years of experience. I’m having trouble with my own car at the moment. I thought it was a wheel bearing I replaced one front bearings but the noise was still there. I have checked my tyres and there is cupping on them all, funny thing is they are wearing very evenly apart from the saw tooth effect. I suppose it’s down to not rotating the tyres early enough. They aren’t cheap tyres but low profile continentals. Good info here, thanks.

My 97 F150 was fine until I took it in for a recall in 97. They said they screwed up and knocked the weight off the driveshaft and had to replace it. After that, it made that wop wop sound. I took it back several times but they said it was the tires and I would have to deal with Firestone. That year I got a company car so I drove the truck very little for 6 years. The tires dry rotted so I had 4 brand new Goodyear tires put on the truck. Guess what. I still have the exact noise coming from the rear. Same sound, same volume, louder at slower speed but the same wop wop wop. Only difference is that now there is no warranty and the dealership says oh well. Any ideas?

Nice video. Lots of good information on tires. #TireManufacturesMatter I worked in a tire shop for a few years and put on many a tire and fixed many a flats. I've always been impressed with Toyo tires. It's the only tire I'll put on my personal vehicles. They aren't top of the line like Michelin, but they are way better than factory rubbers, and not too far behind Michelin IMO. There are plenty of good tires out there but people really should buy the best tire they can afford, and should try to save money to buy even better tires if they can.

Over 30mph road noise is louder than the engine. I've been over inflating two of the tyres once a week because of rim leaks. I knew I'd likely cause uneven wear but didn't know about this noise.
Mondeo's 17 years old with only 40,000 miles, so I didn't expect the bearings to be worn, although I really don't know if this is possible.
Thanks for the explanations, I'll get on it as soon as.....

Hi Brian. I've looked and can't find a video on changing OEM bulbs (turn signal, interior backup, etc) in your library. I have a 2011 F150 XLT super crew and I put LED's in last weekend. This in turn cased the rapid blinking like a bulb is out. I saw videos saying that I need a LED compatible relay switch, which I bought. I just can't find the location of the old relay to replace it with the new one. Then I found a video that said the 2011 F150 uses a computer to control the blinker speed. Can you advise? Thanks for your time. Matt.

Thanks for this very helpful video! My original set of tires were running out. I had to replace them in few months, unfortunately/fortunately, a front passenger side's tire inflated. So I replaced it with a used tires, by the time I was getting ready for a new set. With that used tire, I had some grinding noise between 20mph to 40mph. Has you recommended to feel the tire, before I even touched it, I noticed that its TREAD PATTERNS was Asymmetric while the rest of the tires were Symmetric ! I did some researches and found that, both shouldn't be mixed on one vehicle. So I re-replaced the Asymmetric one and Voila! The noise is gone!

I've been dealing with this issue on my 2014 Mustang GT since it was new. I've had the alignment done at least three times and rotate the tires every 5,000 miles. I'm still running the factory Pirelli PZero Nero tires. The original 18" tires and wheels I swapped out fairly early with a like new set of take off 19" factory Mustang rims and that had the same Pirelli tires on it and it didn't take long for the noise to start because of the feathering of the front tires hence the multiple front end alignments which were pretty much within factory specs each time. The factory 18" developed this feathering problems before I swapped them out with the 19" tire and wheel setup. The question now is what is a better quality tire to put on when I go to replace the current tires? Michelin? The tire noise is so loud now that it's no fun driving this car with the windows up. Car only has about 32,000 miles on it.

Im a technician for a fleet of about 350 E350's. We recently bough 50 2016 E350's Dual Rear Wheel and they came with Michelin All season tires. At 80PSI Front and Rear we averaged 8-12k Miles on them. They we're way too soft of a tread to handle the weight of the vehicle plus load. They all had the exact same tread wear as you just showed.

ratbert86 Michelin tires have an especially soft compound for ride comfort and grip. Not all of their tires have this compound but if you put these tires on your vehicle and expect long tread life, you will be disappointed. I use these tires on my Lincoln Town Car since the sidewall flex is part of the soft ride of the car but 35K is about all the life I get out of them. I have to pay extra for the ride.

Tires on the steering axles get more wear and tear than the fixed axels, if you rotate them you get longer life from them because they wear more evenly as where if you didn't rotate them the steering axel rubber would wear more quickly.

Very informative video. You mention about shock absorbers being a cause of tyre problems. Would you be able to show a video on how to change them?

I'd buy new tires anyway because they usually dry rot before you have uneven wear.

First off, thank you for all the great F-150 knowledge!
I've got an 02 F-150 5.4L 4x4 and I've got the infamous "Death Wobble" and I haven't a clue what to do next. What I've done: new stabilizer and bushings, new control arm, new ball joint (front driver side), new brake calipers, rotated tires. NOTHING HELPED! The front tire wobbles uncontrollably. I'm running out of time and money.
PLEASE HELP A SINGLE DAD OUT!

Continental tires suck in my opinion. Installed True Contact on a Grand Marquis. Even with KYB mono shocks, lots of balancing, alignments, good front end I get a bit of speed sensitive steering vibration on some roads. Tire has no obvious issues, even rotated back to front. Continental said some roads and some suspensions will cause a bit of vibration.

What are your thoughts on dry rotating tires, in the close up of the tire you can see a little rot starting, would you recommend tires or would it have to be a lot worse??

Those minute cracks are nothing I have seen trucks with 15k miles on them have this issues they would have to be much much worse to be an issue.

Brian, can you do a video on checking shocks or what to look for in a worn shock? I've always been taught that if a car continues to bounce after going over a dip, then the shocks are worn, but if the dip is absorbed and the car doesn't float or bounce, then they're good. My '03 Expedition has 215,000 miles on the original shocks and doesn't seem to be exhibiting any signs of worn shocks, but I guess that with today's shock technology, a bad shock might not always be as apparent as it used to be.

Not exhibiting any signs of worn shocks would seem to include the fact that they aren't leaking.

Try to check if you have the same tread patterns on all four tires. If you have a "Directional Tread" , make sure that they're correctly installed. I had the same issue until I realized that I installed a different tread pattern on one of the tires.

is it safe to drive uneven tire?

  • @BadRonald1
    @BadRonald1 6 років тому

I just purchased a used 2009 Explorer. I noticed a light flapping noise on the front left tire. The faster I drove the faster the noise. Also I noticed when driving it, it was a real bumpy and shaky. I pulled over and I checked what Ford says to inflate to and It said 35 psi. I check the Tires and they all read 40 psi. I thought why would they inflate it to 40 when it says 35 ? I then start to deflate the tires to 35psi. The bumpy and shaky was gone but then I got a Tire sensor reading. And it's been on ever since. (about 2 weeks) Also I can't find the 5 digit code for the keyless entry. Looked everywhere, driver side fuse box with tiny mirror, rear passenger seat belt panel, computer module etc Nothing. Also place where I bought it from doesn't know either. It wasn't a Ford dealership it was like a Carmax place. I Call Ford, they want $120.00. I refuse to pay that. It's like they have a monopoly over it.

the box with the code is located next to the parking brake assembly.
I used bing to find this. I typed in (2009 explorer keyless entry code) and it was on a site called justanswer. You can read the steps on there on how to access the box.

Hey wasn't saying the shocks are going out on the low mileage vehicles, he was giving reasons for cupping in General. I work at a Ford Dealership. The number one reason at low mileage is Lack of Rotation and Funky Tire Pressures. I see it every day. One tire at 24psi, one at 29psi, one at 32psi, and one at 38psi. People don't pay attention to their tire pressure. We just had someone that had a low profile set of tires and got a flat and drove on it and it shredded the inside of the tire. Also people that get their tires plugged when they get screws or nails in them at tire shops, alot of the time the tech just inflates the tire and puts it back on without even putting it to factory spec. This is usually noticeable when you are checking tire pressures and 3 have 32psi and the 4th has like 42psi. I always check tire pressures and set them to factory door specs unless stated not to by customers. We have a guy with a F250 and he likes his lower because he is getting up there in age and likes a smoother ride.

I decided to check the air in my truck tires a few days ago and was surprised at how bad they were.I keep an eye on these things but also pay a tire company good money for the tires and extra for them to take care of this kind of thing. The tires were all over the place and all low with one barely at 30.It was this very noise issue that brought out the tire gauge. It has gotten to where I can not trust anybody anymore. This includes my dealership who tried to send me across the country a quart low two days after an oil change.

This was a great video for sure but sure wished there was mechanical fix included. Maybe even explaining how to visually check how the tires should look like from the sides when we do a walk around?
seems a lot of people don't know this.
I 100% agree that minimum wear or wear to both sides at the same time or too much wear in the center is owner induced.
Maintaining proper tire pressure and tire rotation is the key to long tire wear. A simple check once a month works.

I wanted to only concentrate on the noise aspect of this kind of concern and leave suspension wear and shock leakage inspection to a separate video. It seem doing it this way it makes it easier for folks to find what they are looking for.
