    Hi Meredith, I love your videos. I learned how to sign the word "SIGN" from your videos. When I did it in class, she told me that it's the old way. She said the new way is having your hands at your abdomen level in closed fist, then shooting your fingers out and back in. Do you find it used both ways or.....?

    • @ASLMeredith

      Hi there, great question! There are some concepts that have multiple signs, and "sign/signing" is one example: Two of the most popular ways are (1) the index fingers moving in a circular motion and (2) the fists opening and closing. I've seen some debate among the Deaf community as to whether these are equivalent, or if one (the index fingers) is more about a literal vocabulary SIGN or signs in general, and the other (the fists) is more for referring to *fluent* signing, rather than "What's the sign..?". Others think they're equivalent, or even that fists is preferable to the index fingers. So you'll see people use both out in the real world! In your class, you should use what your teacher suggests.

    Hey Meredith! What's the difference between night and english?

    I always thought “no” was one time and “chicken” was multiple, but that may not be the case. I know this doesn’t have to do with the video, but right now it’s your most recent. Can you help?

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  3 роки тому

      Ah, good question! The handshapes are different: CHICKEN uses the thumb and index finger, while NO uses the thumb and index *and middle* fingers. Chicken tends to be a double movement as you note, while NO can be a variety of number of movements.

      I've heard that it was similar to a curse word. I'd like to see what the difference is so I don't mess it up, haha. I prefer the faster breakfast sign...

    Lunch v Lemon?

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  3 роки тому

      Good eye! They're similar, but have different movements: LUNCH taps the chin, while LEMON stays in place on the chin, moving the index finger up + down

    I love your videos in general, and have been using them to get back into fluency, but your light colored shirts and background make it nearly impossible to see the signs. Do better.

      Hi Karen, thank you for your feedback. Most of my (especially more recent) videos use a black shirt for extra skin contrast. However, I do record these in my personal free time and I don't wear black every day. Thanks for understanding.
