What We Know Warframe Lore - The Technocyte Infestation

  • The Technocyte is by far the most dangerous force present in the system, with no possibility of allegiance or armistice. Yet there are many questions regarding its nature. Is it truly a mindless swarm? Or is there deliberate movement behind its chaotic actions? Where did it come from? Was it an ancient Orokin bio-weapon, a building material, or even a harmless decoration utilized in tower ships? And is the Technocyte of yore the same strain that we encounter today? Much like the Technocyte itself, the swarm of unanswered questions is overwhelming.

    So, from Rhino Prime's lore snippet, a Tenno is made from a Warframe (formed of Technocyte) and an Operator (a child exposed to void energy.) If the Orokin used Technocyte in this manner, that would suggest that Technocyte was primarily a tool of industry. The Orokin probably used it to build ships and weaponry, then it went dormant until "Once Awake." Due to mishandling by crazed Grineer scientists, it's now gone out of control and is developing on its own.

    • @Verystoic
      @Verystoic 7 років тому +34

      The "operator" is just another term. Tenno is what it is, The human. the warframe is just the frame. the 2 concepts "warframe " and "operator" dont make you tenno. because even humans can use frames though there are more severe casualties for that, hence why it is special the way tenno can manipulate their frames so easily due to void influence. All the tenno is, is the child affected by the void and given their abilities, the frame is just a medium through which they "operate" from safety as well as a means to house their void energy in such a way that they can transmit such energy by will, without actually being there physically themselves. the bit about grineer scientists, not completely accurate in the way we've been told, because either way the infestation is a bit similar to necromorphs from deadspace, they spread and grow in number regardless of reason and they are speculated to not be mindless beings but function from some form of intention, whatever their true intention may be. the grineer interferance really seemed to just have simply sped it up. but yes, Operator is just another term that the tenno is referred to usually by ordis specifically. after the second dream lotus no longer addresses us as operator either in the way she once did, now she just says "tenno", she isnt refering to our frames at all, just us as the child that she knows she is speaking directly to. The frame: Just a surrogate body.

      Modern times I have something to add, a lore entry describes a crew of grineer during the collapse turning on the orokin they were made to protect, Comondeering the vessel after it had been given control. The orokin were indeed fleeing the infestation.
      I believe that while the technocyte was initially created for general purpose building, say terraforming venus from acid oceans and heat to cool mountains. It was self evolving and continually consuming itself, eventually maybe an accidental task given to it or an error but somehow maybe it was given the command to spread, consume, grow. And that's when it stopped listening to orders, or it self evolved enough through random chance or as apart of a program to help itself construct something that it gained its intelligence and begun devowering everything in its wake. Infesting the living orokin towers and anyone within.

      Also the game Dark Sector uses the same origin for the creation of Warframes as the protagonist Hayden Tenno gets infected with the technocyte virus and turns into a proto excalibur. I was somewhat surprised to see that DE still used that plot point for Warframe despite claiming that Dark Sector has little connection to Warframe.

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader 5 років тому +8

      It's now a fact--the warframes, those created back in the Orokin era instead of the non-primes you're using at least, are people infected with the technocyte virus & forcibly made into mindless, near docile weapons. The non-primes in the current era are simply technological, manufactured puppet copies.

  • @chloekaftan
    @chloekaftan 7 років тому +36

    The orokin created the technocyte originally as a means to rapidly terraform planets and to re-establish plant life within the origin system specifically earth, it was later weaponized to attempt to beat the sentients but could not be controlled.
    Its also worth mentioning that the word "origin system" is used often, this would suggest that while the orokin are dead in sol they may have colonized either tau ceti, alpha centauri, epsilon eridani or the sirius cluster, they definitely had the technology to do so as shown with the zariman ten zero's journey to tau ceti, so its not unlikely that they've colonized nearby star systems within our stellar neighborhood.

  • @XxxTohot4youxxX

    The orokin were clearly the biggest threat to the system. Not only were they trying to take over and extremely militant and murderous but they have literally fucked up so many times resulting in so much death and destruction. They needed to go extinct before they did any more damage on accident. Warframe needs a live action series when they finish the storyline.

    Cool! Mind if I add some more info?
    First of all, the Lotus states "Deep within this millennia old Orokin-turned Infested ship lurks a creature [Lephantis] created to fight in the Old War.", which obviously means the infestation was created by the orokin to fight the sentients.
    Secondly, the hive-mind is very active and intellegent. It has a clear purpose and reacts instantly. Here are some quotes from the Lotus.
    "The infestation has spread to this location faster than anyone predicted. Everyone is gone, except our operative. It is almost as if the Infestation has deliberately captured our operative. This sort of behaviour is highly unusual." - Infested Rescue Mission Dialogue
    Alas, RNG is not on my side (as usual) and I may have missed some dialogue even after repeating the mission several times. (There are multiple versions of mission dialogue, selected by RNG)
    Furthermore, both Warframes and Specters can be controlled by the Infestation (as seen in the Mutalist Alad V boss fight), which supports the theory that the Infested is Tenno "flesh", and since Warframes can be infested by even the original strain, as evidenced by the Lotus' reaction upon seeing Infested Chroma: "Chroma?! I haven't seen one since... no it couldn't be."
    Let me know if I missed anything.
    :D

      Btw, remember that Grineer bio-weapon research conducted by Doctor Tengus (also responsible for the creation of G3) is probably one of the most significant factors to the rise of the Infestation after the Orokin Empire.
      As usual, the lore is really unclear, and from what I can gather from the dialogue, Doctor Tengus, for reasons unknown, released the Infested specimens.
      Here is some relevant dialogue from the quest Once Awake. (not all dialogue)
      Unknown Lancer: The Tenno! Keep them away from the specimens!
      Unknown Heavy Gunner: Destroy them! Doctor Tengus demands absolute secrecy!
      Unknown Lancer: Who released the specimens? Stop the Infested, forget the Tenno!
      Unknown Heavy Gunner: They're out! What's going on? Who let them out? Was it Tengus?
      Unknown Lancer: (darkly) Tengus did this. I KNOW he did.
      Audio recordings of above quotes are available in the Wiki.

      @StallordD  9 років тому +7

      +Eric Fung One reason I didn't straight up claim the Orokin used the technocyte as a weapon is because there are some who interpret that line to mean that Lephantis was the weapon, and not the infestation itself, indicating that Lephantis was something else before it was assimilated. I personally believe that Lotus is referring to the technocyte, but it's still a valid interpretation.

    I agree with pretty much all the points in the video. A curious question rises in regards to the seeming ability of the Infestation to replicate particular "strains" - the Ancients in particular. You're right, the Warframe are made using Technocyte

  • @chloekaftan
    @chloekaftan 7 років тому

    The technocytes were organic nanomachines originally designed to combat the sentients unprecedented ability for adaptation with its own innately unpredictable ever evolving nature, however the technocytes were designed with limitations like everything else with orokin genetic design which prevented the technocytes from becoming a more serious threat than the sentients, it is also very likely that the original technocytes acted very similarly to somatic links allowing the first zariman tenno to control them but likely had much lower viability for its lack of transference potential as compared to a humanoid form that reflects the tenno's form, this surged the reassigned role of technocyte from its original flood-like role to one more akin to building blocks with which the warframes founding designs were born, its also quite possible that the neural sentries were designed to use technocyte to indoctrinate intruders and craft orikin ornamental adornments with the very same technocyte, and if this is true then the possibility that hunhow might be able to take control of the infested as well as deactivated warframes through an assimilated neural sentry is quite likely and may happen sooner than we think

    I Just wanted to say this. The infested seem to only go to corpus ships in my opinion(First) And they come in those orange things u see around the ship when ur fighting the infested (The orange bee swarm lookin things) And from there they find a dark part of the ship and infest that area (Like she sais with the lephantis It absorbs matter over time) Like we see with the growths on the ship. from there seeing as most corpus are usually inside a holding thing or hung up like they are around the maps, the infested Targets those seeing as there just bodies and idlely sitting there. Same with them moas. they sit in cases and are not touched only for the infested to get ahold of them. then from there they can physically attack the corpus or in other words "Defend the growth on the ship" Until it gets so big that they just overrun the corpus and consume all of the bodies and what not. Then from there The corpus infested ships Not only become a vessel to create more infested it also creates more orange spores to find other ships. From there seeing as the infested cant Infect the Grineer ships via spores (Seeing as the grineer would just kill it and destroy it first glance) they use the physical bodies of the corpus to attack and overwhelm the grineer. Also for where the ancients come from The infested realises its bodies can die so they create ancients that heal or in other words Help the infested in fighting (Seeing as thats what it gears itself towards) It uses matter and energy from matter like the lephantis. However in my opinion Why other corpus ships dont help the one that is getting infected is because They themselves do not want to Have anything to do with the infected so they stay away in fear of becoming infested. Thats why some of the ships u see (Or like the area u get extracted from is outside in space with debris around because the corpus ships were taking pot shots and trying to destroy it. But from that more spores fly over and infect that ship and so on.

    One thing I think you don't see- the derelict, controlled by infestation more than other things, and you can see the infestation turning into plants. That may be the key

    It is absolutely fair to assume that the Warframe biosuits themselves are an application of the Technocyte virus. After all, that is what gave Hayden Tenno his abilities in Dark Sector.

  • @theRealDonaldTrump666
    @theRealDonaldTrump666 6 років тому

    2 things. 1) the technocyte infestation was partially made by the orokin. lephantis is a weapon of the old war against the sentient as are the tenno. lotus says this when you go to kill him though she leaves out the tenno part. 2) something that happens after this vid was uploaded the war within kind of just mentions in passing some lore and 1 part you may not even hear depending on the choices you pick. it implies the adults went mad in the void and began to hunt the children when supplies ran low. only the children became teno having been affected by the void in a specific way . when they return there is a bit of a issue with them being allowed to continue to exist. seen as "infected" by the void despite not having any signs of deformation. the derelict is ground zero and a direct link to the back story of why teno exist. the adults became the original infested. the orokin studied specimens and made lephantis and later weaponized the teno using what would be considered the ground work for later corpus proxies as drones controlled through transference

    Technocyte was created off of base DNA, which is how it can bond to Tenno, Orokin, Corpus, and Grineer, and that could be the reason why Lephantis says "We are your flesh" due to the fact that the dna is similar.

    The Technocyte Virus is basically The Flood from Halo. Not entirely a ripoff, but might have been inspired. Warframe has always given me a Halo feeling when playing is and Halo has definitely had a influence on other games.

    • @phlixcarbon
      @phlixcarbon Рік тому +1

      The main influence is from Warhammer 40k It has influenced so many different games including Star Craft, Halo etc.. The infested and flood both seem to be based on a fusion of the Warp demons and Tyranids. Warhammer Tyranids itself was influenced by Xenomorphs. Influence and inspiration can keep going but Warhammer and Warhammer 40k are the largest influences in Modern Gaming.

    What we know- Orokin or Orokin Influence on the current state of the system.
    Also, adding on the influence of Dark Sector. Warframe is somewhat a spiritual successor, drawing influence from, and referencing Dark Sector often.. HOWEVER DE has specifically stated that Dark Sector is not Canon to the existing Warframe universe.

    • @StallordD
      @StallordD  9 років тому +1

      +Samuel King True, when I mentioned Dark Sector and it's impact, that was what I meant. Not that it takes place in the same universe and thus follows the same rules, but rather that it draws heavily from those same rules for its own version of the technocyte.

    Well the use of cascade bombs in the void towers is pretty much out now with the Plains reveal because that would have killed what was inside the walls and though maybe not impossible to regrow it I would assume it is a difficult process and such an event would leave the orokin planetary settlements open to sentient attack and while I do think the orokin were sh!t heads I don't think they were that stupid
