- Weighing less than 1.5kg, the Sony FE 300mm f/2.8 GM is the lightest lens of its kind. I was able to take over 10,000 photos in practice and would like to share my impressions about handling, image quality (also with converters), autofocus and stabilizer with you in this video.

Nice review. Love the comparison with the Canon!
Thanks for the feedback!
Very interesting results and handling
Early 2024 I was very close to buying a Sony 300mm 2.8 GM Lens with 1.4x and 2x, but then I saw the announcement of the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens which I preordered, I am very happy with the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens and I can highly recommend it.
Great video Fabian!
I've had this lens since it was released and I absolutely love it! Love how small and light weight it is, makes it really easy to throw in a backpack for a hike. Totally agree with your findings on the 2x converter. Still very sharp but maybe just the slightest loss of consistency. It was really interesting to see how it compared to Canon's 100-300.
For me this is my primary lens. A 400 or a 600 prime are out of my budget, but at basically half the price of these larger lenses, I think the 300 is incredible. And with how well it takes teleconverters, personally I dont think I'll ever need something bigger.
Hi Fabian
Nice review of this beautiful Sony lens in every respect. Sony's lens designers have achieved a very nice performance with this lightweight prime lens. In terms of usage, the Canon Rf 100-300 is more usable because you have more focal point variation. The disadvantage of the Canon is the extra weight and the higher price. I'm curious to see what the upcoming new lenses from Sony will bring us.
Great review Fabian! The RF 100-300 makes a lot more sense when you realise it was designed with sports and photo journalism as a priority. Neither of those type of pros are likely to be using it with a 2x TC. It is heavier than the Sony prime but when you factor in having to pack a second or third Sony lens to cover shorter focal lengths, while you only need the one canon lens, suddenly it doesn’t seem so heavy in your backpack … anyway, 2.5kgs is easily handholdable for most able bodied people…
Great video thanks
My go to lens for wildlife 😉😏
I find the AF suffers more using the 2x teleconverter on the A1ii than the A9iii with the 300 F2.8. Have no idea why that may be so? A good and fair review with which I would concur. I am pleased Sony went down this route, as the lightness is the number one reason I use the 300 over the 400.
I guess it was due to the readout speed that the a9iii is the faster one. But it was perhaps due to firmware on a1ii is not stable yet
A friend of mine got to return two of those 300mm f2.8 G Master because of dust inside on the front elements. Did you check your lens for dust? Or is it because we are the Eastern Europe market?
The A1 doesn’t have an AA filter (so I assume the A1 mk2 doesn’t either) , I’m guessing that would be the explanation of the difference in sharpness between canon and Sony 300mm f:2.8 for small feather details at least at low ISO. At higher iso, canon bakes some noise reduction into the raw files - it’s well done and discreet but it might explain differences in sharpness at higher ISO.
Hello Fabian, I am going to a macro trip where I will be using A7RV + 90mm + Twin Flash. Do you recommend bringing 100-400 and sony a7iv along for flying insects and skittish subject? I am scare that I will be carrying too much...do you have any recommendation?!
Merci pour la traduction en français 🙏😁😉
Wow, I didn't know the 300/2.8 didn't have strap loops. That's a significant negative.
It’s somehow integrated in the foot - but most wildlife photographers will probably replace that one
@@FabianFoppNaturephotographythat’s what i did👌👌👌
I hope Nikon comes out with a Z 300mm f2.8. Maybe even f/2.5!
Great review....makes us Canon shooters jealous! Hopefully they come out with some prime DO lenses like 500 5.6 or 600 6.3. Unlikely they'll do another 300mm.
Why be jealous? I’d rather have a 100-300 for my R3 than a prime. If you really want a nice super sharp 300 go buy a good condition EF 300 f/2.8.
