Videos like this give me enormous appreciation for the men that designed and built these trucks. They roll right off the line and right into heavy road work, park them in a field where they're untouched for 10-20+ years, do a tweak here and there and Boom - fired up and ready to go back to work. Diesel trucks are amazing assets.
That looks beautiful, the 1st wide hood l drove was just before l went to Vietnam, my brother in law that taught me to drive got it brand new 335 turned up 4X4 sweet. Drove it again when I got back! God bless my brothers that didn't come back! R.I.P.

Those trucks were on the road Back in my owner operator days in the 70s .I ran cross country for 20 years.thanks for rekindling fond memories,AKA the good old days
Because so many of them have been drove hard and put away wet the injectors stick batteries and cables corrode it gets water in the fuel or runs out just enough to where it gums things up. Injectors lose prime it takes a little tooling around sometimes
I was in just about every state in the country by the age of 11. I didn’t know I would miss that beautiful sound/smell or a chance to have my dad driving with in the passenger seat again. It’s a different life that you have to be brought up in to really understand. Great truck, the video just brought back some memories. Thanks for sharing!
That's an awesome find, you can't beat the class of a little window, wide hood 359. If it was mine I'd restore it to original, including a 36" sleeper.
That's a pretty clean truck for the age and considering it sat so long to have started up fairly easy. Good luck with the build, hope to see more of it.
@@johncholmes643 I thought in California, you had to have a truck with an engine no more than 5 years old? I think an original 69 Pete the engine would as old as the truck
@@bertgrau9246 Well, there's Washington and Oregon as well. There are many old classics in California as well. Here in Eastern washington it's arid desert. Stuff doesn't rust..
I love when an old truck comes back to life! But it always makes me ponder that not 1 single air line, fuel line , or coolant line has ever dry rotted. Or the brakes are always free. Hey every dash gauge works perfectly!
I lost a lot of business to Matlock back in the 60s & 70s prior to de-regulation , but boy does that tractor bring back memories. Good luck with your adventure.
Great job finding that awesome truck an saving it those old trucks are a lot better then the new trucks they have today .I'll take an old truck anytime .
I started Trucking in 1976, I never thought I'd miss it when I retired some 30 years later, but, I DO! Now I am too old, and too sick to go back, but, maybe just one more Road Load in such a classic as this would make me feel younger, and, better...
I worked for Matlack from 1984-94. I remember seeing that truck every spring out in Iowa, during the spring herbicide season, All I remember is the owner was from out west someplace, nice older gentleman. Would love to have that unit. Brings back a lot of good memories!!
Nothing beats the feel of that ivory white wheel and hockey puck Eaton shifter. The truck I learned to drive in was a 74 359 with a straight pipe big cam Cummins 400 matched up to a 13 speed Eaton. best combo ever
That's awesome! From the good old days before DEF, SCR, DAC records, ELDs and any other stupid acronym you can think of. I miss driving but not all the bs that comes with it now. I just started a 78 Pontiac that sat in my garage or 15 years. Fired right up. Had to drop the tank and get the old gas out because it started clogging fuel filters but shes purring along now. Old vehicles rule.
Tom Paul but also no air ride suspension, no air ride cab, no power steering. Noisy , hot and rough riding. Most drivers today would not last 500 miles in that truck let alone put it in a dock with a 53 foot trailer. Always love how drivers who remember the good old days seem to conveniently forget all the bad old stuff that existed in the good old days. I learned in them old trucks ,I will keep my 2019 thank you very much.
Take a brand new truck off today’s assemble my line and let it sit for the same time and I bet you couldn’t crank it. Much less a million mile truck and letting it sit for that time. No way would u start it. Good luck with the truck! Looks like a cool find.

I'd buy this Pete any day of the week. And the bunk is just the right size too. I drove one like this back in the 80s from Vermont to LA, and back to Montreal with produce. It was painted Purple and we called it the Grape Ape. 425 Cat with an 18speed.
Imagine driving cross - country in that "bare bones" interior. Those were the trucks that Red Sovine, Dave Dudley, and the rest of the "trucker tune" greats sang about...brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye
Actually, get a good seat, replace those straight pipes , get a good radio, and of course get the AC and heat up and going, you'd be surprised at how tolerable it would be to drive. The suck part would be that turd 855 cummins, but that can be remedied aswell
Must of been in dry storage with weekly maid service because l never saw one sit out in the elements for 22 years and stay in that good shape mechanical or cosmetic. That's a hell of find.😎
There's bound to be issues cranking an diesel engine off that's been sitting as long as this one has. Bound to have sticky injectors and fuel starvation issues but this one sounds pretty good...
Now that you found my truck take it to the truck wash and return it to me ASAP 😁 Great video time capsule I’m sure everyone wants to hear more about this tractor 10/4 👍🏽
That a 350 small cam Cummins under the hood? Never mind I found a response to another comment saying it’s a big cam 400. Gotta love the old trucks especially before the days of air ride suspension.
Great looking truck! I just bought one of her cousins, a 1969 Kenworth W900 A model dump truck. I will be posting my adventure on my channel. Mine doesn’t run, YET!
Nice old Pete! I guess judging by the plate, its in Oregon. Back east in NJ where I'm at if it sat that long it would've rusted into a pile of dust by now. Gotta love the climate out there, a bit easier on these old vehicles. I'd love to find a late 70s or early 80s Mack Superliner with a "stand up" Able sleeper to bring back from the dead. That 69 / 359 built America. We need many more videos of this truck.

I'd argue the Mack R model built America, but all trucks had a hand in it.
Mack, Diamond Reo and Brockway built Americas infrastructure. Peterbilt, KW and Freightliner moved America.
