People are talking about this being a trans anthem and they're right but I also want to add that this song is specifically about "belonging to a culture with a complex relationship with gender before colonialism". Underscores and henhouse! are both Filipino and as a gender nonconforming Filipino American myself I immediately understood what "people like us were among the divine" meant. Plus having Catholic relatives, hahaha. My favorite song off this record for sure, I've never felt so incredibly seen.
great points ! "people like us were among the divine" struck me as specifically being about the babaylan / asog, which made me super fucking happy to just hear them being referenced in a song lol. idk if it was specifically intended to reference the babaylan but goddamn it's just so nice to hear someone Say something about it, especially someone as talented as her
"we don't have to talk about it" when you hang out with other trans/non-binary people and you can just be you and it's not fucking exhausting the way hanging out with cis people is, we can talk about what actually matters because we don't have to hash out gender 101 for the millionth time, we know eachother's experiences if not physically then psychically
Rock plus digital/ EDM beats. Swirl it together and don't put it into too much of a box and define it. It's just pure magic. Some glitchiness and beauty.
honestly she HAS to be big inspired by the white stripes/jack white because i hear them ALL OVER this whole album. esp my guy, cops and robbers, and ofc geez louise.
