  • Vuelta a España 2023 stage 20 highlights. A 208km hilly stage from Manzanares El Real to Guadarrama. The longest stage in this year’s race, an almost cruelly long, climb-filled route with no fewer than 10 categorised ascents. Although none of the climbs are that long, or steep, this stage has the most climbing metres of any at this year’s Vuelta, 4,431m in total. It’s hard to see the riders sitting back on this stage, a last shot to win glory for many.

We need a Netflix series on this year’s Vuelta. From the chaos on stage 1&2 with the organisers to Kuss’ stage 6 breakaway win to Roglic and Vingergaard dropping Kuss on Stage 16 to Remco’s amazong come back. Action packed cycling tours this year. Wow

I very, very much wish we had the GCN coverage in the US. Much more depth, Dan is absolutely the best with his dry humor and dead on timing. More of an honest assessment of the race. Bob Roll must have a cue sheet in front of him that reminds him every day to mention 1) Roglic has had crashes, 2) use 'spectacular,' 'incredible,' 'astonishing' 5 times per stage, 3) say 'Christian?' after every comment, etc. When Kuss first was in the jersey they were happy but it was still somewhat unbiased commentary. As the race went on and he held it, they were more enthusiastic but still figured Roglic or Vingegaard would get the win. Then they wholly switched to open bias, lobbying on air for Kuss to win, how Roglic was evil, Vingegaard was a bit less evil (after all, he attacked and gained over 1 minute on Kuss 'in honor of a friend' -- obviously Kuss was not that friend). It was shameless, especially coming from a staunch, almost rapid Lance Armstrong apologist (Roll) and one of Armstrong's team members who was a doper as well (but he was young so . . . it was okay?). Love Sepp Kuss, but the US has not had a clean win in a grand tour since . . . LeMond?

    Sometimes sportsmanship supersedes statistics.
I believe the solidarity, the smiles, the camaraderie of Jonas and Primos was authentic (whether there is place for all in one team remains to be seen)
Both those men, but especially Jonas will end their cycling careers as greats of the sport.....however I doubt 1 team winning all three GT's with different riders will ever be repeated...and won by the man who rode ALL 3 and helped the the other 2 win their titles!!!
An enthralling Vuelta in many ways and one that will certainly become part of cycling folklore.

Found this interview with Sepp in Ciclismo Internacional from 3 years ago. Glad it came true!😅
Do you see yourself as a grand tour contender some day?
Eventually I hope to be a Grand Tour contender. Physically, I think I can cope with racing for three weeks and it suits me, but what I need to work on the most is keeping the incredible focus for a whole Grand Tour. As a support rider, you can mentally switch off a bit on days that aren’t as crucial, but going for GC it’s a complete different mentality. That’s something I still have to learn, and it’s not normal for me to be nervous all the time, so I would have to do it in a way where I could be a ‘relaxed’ leader.
Would that be possible in Jumbo?
I think so, at the end of the day, you just need to be the best, right? Also, I would function better going into a race with multiple leaders. There would be a bit less pressure and I could be more free in the race instead of having seven guys looking after me all the time which can be stressful.
There´s a lot of talking about 3 leaders or one. What´s your opinion about it? Remember what happened to Movistar…
I think the main difference is, at least from knowing Steven, Tom, and Primoz, there’s no big egos. Of course they all are ambitious and want to win, but in my opinion, they have a common interest rather than an internal competition and I think that brings out the best of them and the team around them. 👍

There was a clear cut leader but that kind of rotated from time to time.

Some reasons why it is not since you cant produce any yourself but just idiotically keep barking the same sentences:
      1) PR and JV have been the strongest GC Riders apart from TP for years it is not surprising that they are better than the other GC-contenders in this race. Sepp has been showing that he can be better than the best for years and got lucky on stage 8. Also a lot of the other Contenders had bad luck or underperformed. Doping can‘t be used for such a long time without big peaks and getting detected.
      2) their Watt/Kilo are good but not extraordinarily high this tour.
3)A system for a team to dope would have to be extremely big. Talking Festina/DDR type big. This is not possible nowadays. (If you dont belive me watch some documetaries and ask yourself if this could be done 2023).
      4) they get tested multiple times a week during before and after GT got a theory how to evade that?
      5) i‘ve been on a very high level in an endurance sport and noone offerd me anything and i never saw anyone take anything or get busted

    Two things :
Roglic will be 34 in a few weeks. He was looking for a record-tying 4th Vuelta, and maybe break that record in the next few years. Roglic may have given up his place in cycling history to help Kuss.
Vingegaard was looking for a rare Tour-Vuelta double. If he had done it, many people would be consider him the top cyclist in the world, in front of Pogacar. He gave it up to help Kuss.
Once the top 3 was settled, they should have fought it out. May the best man win!
