  • Why are there so many places in America called "Union Station"? Because they are the union point of multiple rail companies that come together at major intersections so travelers can connect from one rail line to the next. This is the historic Washington DC Union Station one of the busiest rail hubs in America!

    My late mother used to take me and my little sisters years ago to Union Station every Saturday to have dinner and watch a movie (back when they had a theater there). Back in the late 90s to early 2000s it was an actual place of leisure. Overtime the "leisure" aspect of Union Station has declined but it has pretty much remained a major transportation hub within the DC Metro Area as well as the East Coast.

    Nice video. I visited Union Station in August 2019 and I ate at UNO Pizzeria and Grill and Johnny Rocket's. Brought back some good memories.

    Hi friends, I sometimes think that the ancient Romans then have moved to America LOL
    Paul! I bow to all this architectural beauty!
    that I really like very much,
    I salute you and wish you a good appetite!
    a compliment to Bev for calm hand while doing the filming.
    I wish you both a Happy New Year and a great 2015 :-)
    Ciao!

      Eusepio1957 Thank you Ettore, that is very kind. We do have a love of Roman architecture for public building here in the US. We are very fond of it, and Bev is constantly commenting on the ornate details on so much of it here in DC. I hope you and your wife have a wonderful and safe New Year, and much prosperity throughout the coming year! Paul

(born and raised in the great State of Delaware, now living in Philadelphia, PA) Grandfather used to work on the Railroad when it was Conrail or Pennsylvania Railroad in Wilmington De before it became Amtrak. In fact, it switched to Amtrak when he retired so many years ago--early 70s.

      Lora Spohn It is our pleasure, and thank you for watching and commenting! I think you will find the building even more impressive in person. There is a lot we just couldn't fit into the video. We actually came into the station on the Metro, which I barely talk about in this episode. Thank again! Paul

      RealUnitedStatesVlog Is the Metro by any chance a train that could take us to Tysons Corners? We wanted to go there on our layover

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  9 років тому

      Lora Spohn Yes it is. The RED LINE will take you to Metro Center, where you will change trains to the Silver Line, which stops right at Tyson's Corner. All of the info and a map are on their website (wmata.com). Enjoy your stay!!Paul

      RealUnitedStatesVlog Do you need cash for the metro line or do they take credit cards?

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  9 років тому

      Lora Spohn They do take credit cards. If you are making multiple trips I suggest buying a SmartCard which costs $10 and has $8 of fare on it (the card cost $2). All of the rate info is on wmata.com. Paul

    It's amazing how much gets packed into metro stations, especially the big ones in major cities. You should see the one up in Montreal if you haven't already.

      deathgod57 We have not yet been t Montreal, but I understand it is a beautiful city. The Union Stations that we have seen are really quite beautiful and elaborate. I would like to cover more of them in the future. These place are massive structures and sort of like miniature cities onto themselves. Paul

    I had a field trip to Washington DC with the rest of my 8th grade class last week, and we went to Union Station everyday for Lunch. My favorite was Sakura Japan, they had great chicken teriyaki. Union Station is definitely an amazing place. I've even shopped at FYE a few times, which is my favorite store in the station. I miss it already :)

      @Realunitedstates  9 років тому

      GravityGrande It is a very popular place for lunch, and I typically eat there at least once a week. It's especially nice on days when the weather is bad because the train takes us right into the building and we don't have to walk in the rain or snow. Glad you enjoyed your visit! Thanks for watching and commenting!!

I'm also happy knowing that you's guys are doing great. Lots of blessings for the new year. Can you give me some tips on how to keep the camera still you and Bev did an amazing job with the camera . That would had been me it would be flying all over the place, lol I still have problems in keeping the camera straight lol

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  9 років тому

      nery colon 1 Thank you Nery! It is an impressive place. As for keeping the camera steady, well Bev will address that for you, but when I use it, it is a matter of extreme concentration on the position of the camera. We plan to get a stabilizer, but the fact is that Bev is a natural talent at holding the camera steady. I call her "The human tripod". LOL! Perhaps she can give you more insight.Paul

    • @bevcampbell4301
      @bevcampbell4301 9 років тому

      Hi nery colon 1 I work at keeping the camera straight. I learned thru watching videos that you are supposed to keep your upper arms close to your body, by your sides or ribs.This limits the arms from flailing in front of you. also I usually only see what is on the camera screen because I focus my attention there. Holding the camera straight takes practice. Some days it is still hard for me too.

    This video exactly defines Union Station DC.
    It is a big shopping mall with all kind of food stands.
    Big and impressive, lots of marble and stone. But also with cracks, and some leakage, look at the ceiling in front of Starbucks.
    When I was here to take a train to New York Penn I was very surprised by the lack of 'railway'.
    I already booked a ticket in Europe as part of my route through the USA.
    We had to assemble at a gate, which is very unusual for Europeans, and it really looked more like an airport, a very old airport.
    The train was late, so waiting and waiting... and the gate was not very comfortable.
    When the doors opened to the train, we were astonished. There was nothing out there! Only a track with a train, no platform, no hall, no ceiling, just open air!
    We had to climb into the train, first a little bit of a ladder then a few steps. We were traveling, with suitcases. How to get them up? One of us went into the train and had to take over the suitcases, almost laying down on the floor.
    Our hands were dirty, our clothes got dirty, and we thought we were in a third world country.
    The quality of the train was shocking. It was clean, but looked as if it needed renovation twenty years ago.
    Then our bumpy ride started, shaking up and down, left to right, I even hit the window with my face at one of the bumps.
    We survived and made it to New York.
    Most people in the video are not railway passengers, they are shoppers. Slowly walking around.
    Compared to European railways and railway stations, this Amtrak journey is it not very passenger friendly.

    Great video, but you might have mentioned that the main reason for all the scaffolding is to repair damage to the ceiling caused by the August 2011 east coast earthquake. Though it was felt to be necessary sooner or later anyhow, that event was the catalyst for the latest restoration. The prior major renovation had been in the mid 1980s...there was a really good article about it in Historic Preservation magazine discussing, among other things, the cost of the gold leaf. According to a recent Architecture magazine article, today's cost for gold leaf replacement is $700,000! Picked up by a corporate sponsor, fortunately.

      Salmagundiii Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. And thanks for the additional info. Sadly I could only include so much, and as it turned out the video ran longer than I originally planned anyway. In retrospect on many videos there are always additional things I think to myself, "I really should have also . . . ." But at the end of the day we post it and hope for the best.

      Yeah, I understand it's harder to organize such videos than it appears to viewers. You did an awesome job though. It's one of the best buildings in DC and it amazes me I still meet people who say they've been to the city but haven't seen it. (those traveling by air mostly, LOL)

    Minute 3:15 I believe the Chinese discovered america and thats why you can find similarities between Peruvian/bolivian and Chinese music, that includes some art expressions.
    8:26 Another paul from another dimension and time...right in the middle of the shot.

    13:42 I dont like starbucks... overpriced coffee.
    14:50 haha that woman trying to recognize you from tv or something..
    15:01 That asian sir that went next to you has a tremendous resemblance to Fujimori a Peruvian president now in jail.

      ***** Thank you. I am really quite humbled to hear that ours are the only videos you watch in entirety. We do try quite hard to make them as interesting as possible. The doppelganger at 8:26 is a little disconcerting! I never noticed it until you mentioned it! Seriously, who was that guy?! Interesting that it appears I am as oblivious to everyone around me as they generally are to me. I suppose that's the only way I get through vlogging in public in a crowd. In post I did notice a few people trying to get a look at me, but nobody usually says much to me in person at the time of filming. Have a Very Happy New Year . . . and as always . . . thank you for commenting. :D Paul

    Where are the hotel booths

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  9 років тому

      Carlos Hernandez Carlos, to my knowledge there are no hotels that have a presence (booth, kiosk, etc.) within Union Station. There are five hotels within a couple of blocks of the station however. This is actually an interesting point that had not occurred to me. Many large airport terminals here in the USA do have hotels directly within the terminal, but the rail station, at least this one, has no hotel nor even representative to promote a nearby hotel. Thanks for watching and commenting! Paul

      RealUnitedStatesVlog how about where baggage claim is located

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  9 років тому

      Carlos Hernandez The Amtrak does have checked baggage service at Union Station, but I do not know where in the station it is located. I don't enter via Amtrak so it is probably in the part of the building where passengers for that line board. I recommend looking up Amtrak online and perhaps contact them directly.
