Just finished this right after your same VFR video. What a great concept. Seeing the exact same flight from both techniques is so beneficial. Much appreciated.
I appreciate the info this was exactly what I was missing. Been learning the systems on my own but this helped cover the other buttons and knobs that I had no idea what to do with. I'll look out for more of these. Gotta practice what I just learned before I'll know what to ask for next.
So I’m a beginner as of yesterday to flight sims. I dove in hard and bought the premium deluxe game of the year edition along with the thrustmaster hotas 1 flight stick and thruster combo( no pedals yet). I’ve been practicing with analog instruments just trying to master those first but after watching this video which was by far the best explained video I’ve seen, now I want to step up my game. Thank you for explaining this in your video. I’m still learning all the aviation terminology. So far I’ve had a blast with this game. Y favorite so far is the icon a5, single rear prop that can land in water or on land. Can’t wait for the gliders in august I believe.
Great tutorial. When adjusting mixture, the key indicator is Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) which is on the G1000 in this plane. If you don't have EGT, lean it until engine starts to lose power, then add mixture towards rich so that engine runs smooth. In real life, you don't want to be too lean, which will damage the engine.
Great tutorial, given the fact you cover quite a lot of ground in just 30mins. Well done ! Just a few additional notes ; - When you do GPS approaches, you don't use ILS because like at Sedona there isn't one, so there is no real (ILS) localizer. The vertical and lateral guidance comes from the GPS database installed in the aircraft and GPS navigation. So it is better to say the GPS provides vertical and lateral guidance and with GPS approach you will see magenta CDI indications. For ILS - based on ground-based system - you need an ILS freqency to be tuned in, the CDI set to LOC and if all set properly you will see green CDI guidance. - When using the autopilot, it is recommended to use FLC (flight level change) for climbs and VS (vertical speed) for decents. Main reason is that as you climb, the performance will detoriate (less engine power). If you have selected VS then the aircraft will gradually pitch up the nose more and more, trying to maintain that vertical speed figure (as instructed). However, as you climb the speed will detoriate, and there is a risk that the speed will become too low and you stall the airplane. This should be avoided, also because the pilot might be surprised (not understanding why the stall is happening). Therefore, alsways use FLC for climbs and VS for descents. Hope this nice tutorial inspires people to learn more about the many nice Garmin G1000 features.
Good notes! I appreciate you chiming in on everything! There are so many approach functions and methods, it can certainly get confusing. Wish I could edit the video lol but oh well. Thanks Eugene.
Wow, that approach on runway three is amazing. I’ve landed in Sedona. Probably 50 times most of the time runway three because it’s uphill. I can’t believe how realistic that looks now I want to go buy a PC and hook up lights him. Last time I flew flight simulator was probably 1998
Thanks Jaime! I don't think I'll do every aircraft because there's a lot I really don't care for right now lol but as more aircraft I appreciate come out, I will keep covering more. Join a live stream sometime! They can be pretty educational as well.
The approaches for Sedona the nav points were different for me 3 years later but because you explained it so well in this video, I was able to do it anyways. Great tutorial, thanks.
Have to say this channel is the most helpful channel for MFS2020 without a doubt, you learn so much from this, im a private pilot and i was looking to learn at least how to use the AP on the g1000 and just a couple seconds in the channel and ive learn so much not only about the g1000 but other things Love the channel; New subscriber!
I watched this video and it cleared up so many questions I had regarding the autopilot, especially how to put the autopilot in GPS mode so it will track your flight plan. Now I can enjoy flying again......thank you!
You stated you felt it a bit turbulent on short final, don't forget you added 2 notches of flaps while still a little bit high and you nosed dived plane a bit to drop 500ft asap. Plus you turned off wind display to know direction and wind speed that could be playing a number here. Great video overall.
The G1000 is every beginners favorite starter plane. This plane has taught me how to fly better. Every game session I would turn off at least one of the auto pilot controls just to get a feel for how a plane moves especially during bad weather. I can now fly and safely land planes without auto pilot. The hard part for me is using the brakes without tipping some of the planes over. I play on xbox so the controls are still hard to use.
Amazing, thank you! I was hoping the flight school in the sim would be more extensive, I feel what they teach you is really basics of the basics, if that.
Great Job explaining. Starting my IFR and trying to fly a bunch of them on MSFS2020 and this was a big help. Feel like I'm starting ground school all over!! lol
Wow, awesome. Just one tip, when climbing, it is better to use FLC instead of VS, as FLC will guarantee you will not stall. VS is better used in descent. Just a tip! :)
Yes i found it dangerous because if the plane somehow loses speed it well keep pitching up to stay at that climb rate and this well lead to a stall .... and iam not a pilot just a fsx player
23:08 to know if the VOR are working use the TITS : Tune Identify Test Set so basically you set your NAV frequency, then you "listen" on the radio if you can hear the morse code (if not, it's out of range or out of service), then test if the CDI points at it and finally set your FD to follow it
Great tutorial! Few things to correct: The Maltese Cross indicates the FAF (Final Approach Fix). Above or at 8000/6600, no lower, that’s what the line below indicates.
@@BradySkye you should have picked the localizer earlier, that is where most times an ILS has the GS intercept and where you match the center dot on the GS indicator to the altitude on the chart to verify the GS on the ILS is working. Maltese is for Non Pression Approach. Take a look at a Cat II ILS and you will see there is no Maltese cross, you only get the GS intercept point, which is the FAF.
@@AgonxOC I also saw a few problems with the explanation of Localizer and FAF. On the charts, there is no localizer. Cannot use a localizer if there is nothing there. The Final Approach Fix, (FAF) is there to indicate you are allowed to descend to the airport environment. On a precision approach, you can descend to Decision Height. On a Non-precision approach, you can descend to Minimum Descent Altitude.(MDA)
Started out “Basic IFR & Autopilot...” but you started to expand and show everything on the menus and to me (Newbie) it got confusing. Wish you had stuck to the basic plan from start to finish. But thank you for an excellent video. I will return to it once I become more accustomed to the basic AP and NAV flight modes.
This is such a helpful video, 2 mins in I had already hit the like button! I know I am late to the party , is that why I only have the RNAV 03 approach available for me at Sedona and not the GPS one in the video? Still it was a huge help and I am now flying (crash free) over Leeds in the UK enjoying the newest World Update
a "best practice" is to always climb with FLC (flight level change) and climb via an airspeed - this mode has built in stall protection. VS is good for decent, but will stall the airplane if left unchecked, trying to maintain whatever climb rate you chose.
Very good tutorial, now I have some idea how this works : ) Thank you very much for this. I have a few more requests: 1) how to use NAV indicators on a Cessna 152? 2) How to land an airplane in the dark when you (hardly) can't see the runway? 3) How to use VOR on an airplane? If you could do these tutorials that would be awesome!
Amazing tutorial, been slowly learning. I work at Cirrus Aircraft and they have a program to help with getting your private license. So using the simulator to slowly get into it more.
Thanks for this video. I'm about to start my instrument training and it will also be my first time extensively using G1000s. Trying to use flight sim to get the hang of them lol.
Thanks! Let me know what you're struggling with. Perhaps I should make some more basic tutorials : ) I know there's sooo much information to absorb when you first start flying. Watch that first VFR video and just practice flying VFR in a Cessna 152. Might be good to tackle that airplane and VFR only at first.
@@BradySkye I think lot of people can use the autopilot now on these kinds of planes. But very basic ILS (reading the chart, getting the NAV1/2 setup right) is enough for most of us. The menu should work when you call up the flight plan and select a waypoint on your route, select menu, and it will give you the option to activate leg, or cancel flight plan, etc.
TDZE is the Touch Down Zone Elevation, it is on the airport, not elevation within 3000ft. Some of your Approach plate information isn’t correct, but I appreciate the information you put together to understand IFR in MSFS2020. You did provide good information especially around the performance data.
The hard left turn is sort of realisting because IRL the torque generated from the propeller can cause the aircraft to streer left. MSFS definitely exagerates it though.
can you do a video covering ILS autopilot ? you briefly mentionned how to tunes the frequencies and use VOR navigation, but I'd like more details about how the autopilot also controls the glide slope to the runway. nice video!
Great video Brady, tone is great for being a teacher, unlike ex airforce senior citizen Mr.Smith in fsflight school...subscribed! Small tip...how about making mouse pointer a bit bigger for us blind 4 eyes guys?
to confirm VOR is working you turn on the audio of the VOR and listen for the morse code letters for that VOR station - was the only way to confirm prior to GPS 1000
Thank you for this tutorial it is like an extension for the tutorials from MFS I really enjoyed it, in the end, I have had to adjust the weather for me to be able to land haha but great. I was trying to land using the localizer but I was not able, anyway great way to teach and make it easier for us! (If you happen to know how can I re playing my landings, I will really appreaciate it)
The cross does not mean a localizer. That is a GPS approach the cross designates the final approach fix which is where you should lower your gear have your engine speed set your flap set and basically your approach angle maintained. One more thing your initial altitude as you say using the east west rule, but if you are IFR you will request your initial altitude and ATC will assign you an altitude regardless of your direction. You can request a change in altitude based-on winds aloft or turbulence.
I Brady I've being watching your video and I'am impressed the way you explained all your configurations. I've got a xbox series x with Microsoft flight simulator downloaded as digital redeem code, Can I get the same configuration as how you've done yours on my xbox series x. And using the mouse zoom in and out too configurating in the cockpit avionics too. Please let me know Kind regards Alfie.
1- On the upper right hand of this 'fixed menu' there it says to 'set your cruise altitude'. 2- @07:17, In this case, one must lose 258.55 fpm from 8000 to 6600 ft. at LYRIT. 3- Why do you have full power after you have exceeded the initial phase?
If I want to plan a flight in Europe, where can I get airports information and charts for instrument approach procedures, departure procedures etc. Thank you!!!!! Very good tutorial!!
Would of like for you to touch up on some key points like decent rate vs distance, for example how many ft/min you want to decent to be at certain altitude, in this case from the 9000 ft to the 6000 and at what distance to start doing it. I think this is a question that many of us would like for you to teach us, as there’s many different options out there from different pilots.
So the menu button does work. If you click on your flight plan, then hit menu, it’ll give you several options. One of which deletes your flight plan. Still learning what else it works on.
Followed all this but my AP just would not follow at all. Then I found out its because I had to press the CDI button so that GPS / ENR was showing on the compass. Also just seen that this is covered later in the video, so for anyone struggling NAV not following the route, make sure to press the CDI button until GPS shows in magenta on the compass. Explained more at 20:41
Thank you for this video! I was planning on getting into VATSIM and FSEconomy but I still barely knew how to fly the actual plan I wanted to fly! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! VATSIM is great. Just go wherever controllers are located. You never really know when they'll be on. Perhaps there is some kind of schedule out there. Haven't looked into it. But yeah .. VATSIM is a lot of fun.
Question for group- I'm use to using Garmin 500 GPS- and it displays a helpful GREEN ARROW on TOD marker on ILS approach. Does G1000 still display those green arrows or is it hidden feature or no longer being used or displayed?
if you want all the charts and overlays and you have an iPad or tablet you can Google FltPln Go. it is free and you can connect it to MSFS so you show up on the map
good video but you can also play with the mixture to get the best fuel economy. "You want the most rpms" sounds like you don't understand how engines work. Anything other than takeoff and landing you want the lowest operational rpm to decrease wear on the engine and increase your fuel economy during flight.
Brady, thanks for this tutorial, it was great and very informative. Can you perhaps do a tutorial on how to set the camera buttons for inside and outside shots? Thanks
Great video. Thanks! Whenever I create a flight plan, and put it into Nav mode, the plane just flies straight ahead forever instead of following the GPS track. Any idea why?

Thank you for you excellent instruction
Just awesome instruction
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💯💯💯🤟🏾🤟🏾🤟🏾🤟🏾
Excellent tutorial, thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Yeah there's a few things I got wrong.
The hard left turn is sort of realisting because IRL the torque generated from the propeller can cause the aircraft to streer left. MSFS definitely exagerates it though.
can you do a video covering ILS autopilot ? you briefly mentionned how to tunes the frequencies and use VOR navigation, but I'd like more details about how the autopilot also controls the glide slope to the runway. nice video!
I'll make a note of that and try to squeeze an ILS video in yes. I'll probably do one in the TBM 930.
Great video Brady, tone is great for being a teacher, unlike ex airforce senior citizen Mr.Smith in fsflight school...subscribed! Small tip...how about making mouse pointer a bit bigger for us blind 4 eyes guys?
What kind of computer are you on? Windows PC?
@@BradySkye waiting for a cheque, then going 3070 i7....or maybe even xbox x in summertime.
@@BradySkye win10
Whens Brady's next bush flight? Ever come fly in beautiful British Columbia? Im in CYXX
to confirm VOR is working you turn on the audio of the VOR and listen for the morse code letters for that VOR station - was the only way to confirm prior to GPS 1000
Correct. You would hear the Morse code for that station's 3-letter identifier.
Yeah I messed up that localizer comment. If only I was allowed to make changes. Thanks for chiming in!
Thanks so much for your support on the channel. I honestly have no idea how the controllers work with MSFS. I haven't tried an Xbox for MSFS yet.
Do you know how to use FLC to set a climb airspeed for the AP to use to climb, instead of using VS to climb?
Yes I do. I use that feature a lot in the Airbus. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/tOAzASTbypk/v-deo.html
@@BradySkye haha thanks. I swear when I pressed nosse up/down it was still changing the fpm. Must not have done it properly. Thanks again.
Great edit. Thanks. 👍🏽
Thank you too!
Hey, you could've explained the FLC button that changes the aircraft's pitch to maintain a specific speed.
Yes, I should have mentioned that but I don't really use it in the 172. For larger aircraft, definitely.
@BradySkye it's very useful on a C172, set it to the best rate of climb, 76 knots, for most efficient climb, and clear obstacles with ease.
Please do a video on how to set up multiplayer mode.
Cool👍
Thanks for the tutorial✌️
My pleasure 😊
If I want to plan a flight in Europe, where can I get airports information and charts for instrument approach procedures, departure procedures etc. Thank you!!!!! Very good tutorial!!
Would of like for you to touch up on some key points like decent rate vs distance, for example how many ft/min you want to decent to be at certain altitude, in this case from the 9000 ft to the 6000 and at what distance to start doing it. I think this is a question that many of us would like for you to teach us, as there’s many different options out there from different pilots.
Thank you Brad. I'm not as Ignorant as I was before this. Still Ignorant, just not as much.
You will never be ignorant if always willing to learn.
Explained more at 20:41
I went through that same struggle! Thanks for leaving that tip for everyone : )
Good tutorial, thanks.
Thanks for this!
Thank you for this
Thank you for this video!
Someone just informed there's software called VATSPY to find controllers that are on. Check it out when you get a chance.
@@BradySkye Yep! I've heard about it when I was watching some videos to learn some more about VATSIM! But thank ya!
this was great thanks!
Great Video. Thanks.
Thanks for joining the flight Jake!
TWO THUMBS UP!!
Good vid, but it’s kind of all over the place. Would be helpful if you do one where you stick to the flight plan and only use the necessary equipment.
That's a very good point, and that was not communicated well in this video.
Tip: push down the HDG knob to autoselect current heading...
BTW, 90 knotts on short final is slow? That's actually too fast 😝
Brady, thanks for this tutorial, it was great and very informative. Can you perhaps do a tutorial on how to set the camera buttons for inside and outside shots? Thanks
Just now found this question. Sorry for the 10 month delay lol. Planning on doing more flight simulator videos soon. Just re-downloaded it today.
Very much appreciated!
Great!!! Thanks!
thanks, easy to follow along.
Awesome. Glad it was helpful!
Great tutorial! Thanks! Subbed for more content.
Thanks Mike. Good to have you on board : )
Great video and explanation of IFR. Is there a training session in msfs? If yes, I can’t seem to find it. Thanks again for this video.
Apparently there is an IFR training session via the marketplace done by FS Academy but I have no idea if it’s what you’re looking for or not.
Great video. Thanks! Whenever I create a flight plan, and put it into Nav mode, the plane just flies straight ahead forever instead of following the GPS track. Any idea why?
Thanks! It’s tough to say what’s going on without seeing a screenshot or video of what you are seeing : /
