Such good advice on performing. I'm definitely an introvert by nature, but since learning to play the ukulele I've been inspired to get up and play in front of people. After my first scary performance with a few mistakes, I found I liked the challenge of personal growth. Getting out if my comfort zone . I wanted to get up again to sing and play and do better. By the 5th time in front of my ukulele group, I was determined to have fun and not worry about the anxiety. The 5th time was the best. Like you said, you just have to keep doing it. I also always perform songs that I really like and I always prepare by practicing a lot. When you play the ukulele, people are very curious and intrigued about the instrument so expect that people will want to hear something. So be ready! 😀
Thank you for this video! I especially liked how you emphasized that it is okay to refuse requests to perform. I am nervous about performing but would like to be able to play for my family, and I plan to use your tips to help achieve that goal :)
And when you've chosen, practised, and performed your go to song/tune - you'll need a second and third for when your audience/listeners applauds the first and shouts for more.
Excellent, excellent teaching as usual. I hate hearing those words ‘play something ‘. 😐 Now I know at least how to prepare. 👍🏻 Just gotta find that perfect song!
On the performance anxiety, there's a channel on UA-cam called Digital Tour Bus and one of the clips they do are pre-show rituals. One of them I watched had a singer/ guitarist that vomited before or during every show lol. He said he had to warn someone in front to move out of the way or be sprayed once lol! The guy said it finally went away but it took a long time and lots of shows. 😁
It's funny, almost everything you recommend I do anyway. For instance: I regularly walk around the apartment and talk to my Girlfriend while playing or practice with my eyes closed and stuff. Seems I am on the right path :)
Yeah, me too. I play while heating up leftovers. Got a lot of playing in during the last general election. Everytime a political ad came in the TV, I would hit the mute button , grab my uke and start playing. 😁

Thank you Matt, that was brilliant advice, I’m sure a lot of us new ukulele players are breathing a sigh of relief after watching this 😂
