Expand Synology Volume Size (Without Losing Data)

- If you want to expand Synology volume size in case you are starting to get low on free space, there is a way to do that without suffering data loss and without needing to copy all your data off the NAS. The process is pretty easy when done correctly, but keep in mind the following caveats.
Let me start by saying that in the process of expanding Synology volume size any user, beginner or professional, any user in any experience level has his hands hiver a little in a process like this. This expand Synology volume size process is super critical and sensitive and any mistake could leave you in tears with all your data gone.
The process will require you to gradually pull our drives from your nas, yes, while it is still working. that alone can cause any user a near hart attack. make sure you have your critical data backed up somewhere. this is universally true but especially before a process like this. Synology volumes, like any other volumes on any other systems, are a delicate thing and things can always go south. be prepared for the worst.
Also, in order to expand Synology volume size, you have to be running your volume in a raid array that supports redundancy. like for example, raid1, raid5, raid6, etc. raid0 is a no go!
Once you are ready to start the expanding of the Synology volume size, you need to do it gradually. once drive after the other and after each drive you MUST launch a volume repair action. if you try to pull out all drives at once, your volume and data are toast.
So, expand Synology volume size if you already larger capacity drives on hand, just remember to follow the steps in the video, go gradually, keep cool, it will be over soon :-) do not attempt to intervene in the process. do not reboot your NAS, don't try to re-pull the drives, or anything else, just let the Synology NAS do its thing.

Loved the video, Avi! Get this question all the time and will be pointing people straight to this video! Great work!
Thank you so much Frank. I really appreciate that. Have a great day buddy
Well done Avi! I’ve done a video on this with a 2 bay Synology a few years ago and have gotten many positive comments over the years. I’m sure this 4 bay version will be very helpful to folks out there. Your delivery eases any potential stress users may anticipate. Great job!
Thank you so much, Tony. I really do appreciate you watching. Have a great day buddy
Thanks for the video mate, just upgraded from 4 x 8TB drives to 4 x 12TB drives, which turn up tomorrow. I would recommend (if you haven't done it already) that you explain to people how to "shuck" external drives to internal drives for a NAS, WD Elements drives for example :) people can save money buying the WD Elements drives for NAS purposes, that's what I've done!
Well explained video, thank you, I've got low drive space at the moment, so I get a Warning on the Storage Pool due to low available space, but if I follow the steps how you explained I should be fine I think.
Glad you liked the video mate and good luck! :-)
Going from 3TB to 4TB doesn't seem like it's worth the risk or the cost per TB gained. A larger jump in size has the same risk and effort but a lower cost per volume and is more future proof.
This was mostly for demonstration purposes. Just to clearify the process. The numbers are pretty irrelevant actually
Agreed, the comment is mostly for others that read the comments to encourage them to "go big".
