  • I transformed your favourite calisthenics moves into heavy metal songs! Watch the video to hear what they sound like!
This is my musical interpretation of what I believe calisthenics moves would sound like if they were metal songs (or at least, hif they ad a metal soundtrack accompanying them).
I did my best to try and represent them in a way that was true to the difficulty and visual appearance of each skill. My favourites are the songs for the muscle up, back lever, and bent arm planche. They're just so epic and perfectly convey how impressive they are!

Here are the thought processes that went into making the songs for each calisthenics skill in this video:
    1. Muscle up (00:13) - I wanted this to be the most epic and triumphant song in the whole video because the muscle up is the most iconic move in the whole of calisthenics. It's loved by calisthenics beginners and advanced athletes alike, and even people who don't do calisthenics know about it. So, when creating the song for the muscle up, I made sure it was at a high tempo, had a catchy guitar solo, and used a bouncy rhythm. These choices were all intentional, as I feel like they best reflected the nature of the muscle up. It's a high-energy skill (hence the high-tempo) and you feel amazing when you unlock it for the first time (which is why the guitar solo is so triumphant and why the rhythm is so bouncy).
    2. Bent arm handstand press (00:30) - The bent arm handstand press is an incredibly impressive but incredibly difficult calisthenics skill. The transition from the L-sit into the handstand is a real grind, so I wanted the guitar note choice to convey that. You'll notice that the notes played by the rhythm guitar get higher and higher to match how I slowly ascend when I push up into the handstand. The overall composition of the song also sounds a bit like the kind of thing you'd hear in a boss battle. I did this intentionally to convey the difficulty of the skill. This definitely ain't one for calisthenics beginners!
    3. L-sit (00:44) - For most calisthenics beginners, it's exciting to learn and achieve the L-sit. So, I wanted to reflect this excitement in the song I wrote for it. Again, it's high-tempo to convey a heightened sense of energy, and the notes used for the guitar solo give it a jovial, upbeat feeling. As far as metal goes, this style of riff is not as heavy than the others in the video, so it perfectly reflects the beginner-friendly nature of the L-sit.
    4. Tuck planche (00:56) - I find the tuck planche (and all planche progressions) to be particularly brutal. They're hard to hold and feel very intense; the muscles in your shoulders swell and buldge; you need every ounce of concentration to hold them and every bit of strength. So, I wrote a crushing guitar part to reflect just how brutal the tuck planch is. It's slow, heavy, and powerful. I believe that it perfectly matches how the tuck planche looks and feels.
    5. Back lever (01:16) - Whenever you hold a back lever, it looks and feels like you're flying. It's an epic skill. So, I made sure to write a particularly epic guitar part that utilised a high tempo, bouncy drums, and a guitar melody that inspires a sense of glory in all those who hear it.
    6. Bent arm straddle planche (01:30) - The bent arm straddle planche is one of the only calisthenics skills that makes your body resemble a fighter plane. That's pretty epic. I knew the song I wrote had to do this skill justice, so I thought of a metalcore-inspired song that blended powerful, suspended notes with a cutting lead guitar riff. The drawn-out rhythm guitar notes represent the prolonged hold time of the bent arm planche, and the notes played by the lead guitar convey the mighty prowess displayed by performing such a difficult skill.
DISCLAIMER: before someone comments "these aren't full songs, these are just riffs" here's a heads up: I know. I've called them "songs" instead of "riffs" in the title and description of this video because, after talking to a few people, I realised that most people don't know what a "riff" is. I've learned that it's a term that only guitar players and musicians know, so I called them "songs" to make the video more accessible to the public.
    Hope you enjoy the video!
