When Ant said he knew nothing about the older generation because he didn’t watch them, he should have just stopped there. Glad there are vets in this era holding him accountable tho and trying to educate him instead of just shaming him for it.

@@BlackSnoopi so because he has an opinion that nobody had skill but MJ hes wrong? Is it only the masses opinion that matters? Anthony Edwards is right, i dont see him bring wrong at all. None of past generations would be able to defend PG, Kyrie or Luka in todays basketball. Hell they wouldnt even be able to guard Kat.
Tim Hardaway had the killer crossover people hadn’t seen that before, but because of him now players that have handles like that are all over the league.
Tim Hardaway and Rod Strickland didn't need to carry the ball to get by their man, and they got handchecked to death. That's why both of them are more skilled than any guy playing today, because these guys carry the ball like it had a handle on it, with 3ft of room. By the way, Rod Strickland made zero All Star games (should've made one), so that tells you how good the PG position was.
No, you're wrong!!! Isiah Thomas of the Bad Boy Pistons was the one who brought the Crossover to the league!!!!! Hardaway added a little flare to it. Carry on.....
What people don't understand is that the skills back then were not audience friendly. With the exception of guys like Larry Bird, magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, most guys were just straight up shooters. Like Adrian dantley, Alex English, George girvin, those guys were just straight buckets with simplicity. They weren't breaking you down with the dribble, they were just getting to their spots and pulling up. That's all they practice. And if you practice that long enough nobody can stop you even if it looks simple. But because they're not doing a bunch of between the legs, and pulling up from 30, you discredited the requisite amount of muscle memory needed to be able to hit a bunch of mid-range and layups around four or five people packing the paint
You wasn't watch basketball back then... guys like Eddie Jones, NickVan Axel, and Penny was nasty... they'd school Cats now in there prime! Go watch film
Excellent post. Young people don't understand simplicity. As a former basketball player, i totally agree with you. I also kept finding my spots during the game, in order to score easy and simple.
@@LordBranniganTheI think what KG was saying was that coach was gonna put you in a role and if you deviate from that role you going on the bench which is true. That’s the key word “RESPECT”. Nowadays these kids are being raised by the internet and when I say that, I hope youngsters don’t take that as a slight bc I dam sure wish I had the internet growing up. But for some reason it seems like the only thing that the internet doesn’t teach you is respect. In fact, they make it seem cool to not have respect and that’s what needs change. You feel me that way the cycle continues and everyone gets the respect they deserve. That’s what I’m on. And I get that not everyone deserves respect and they need to be dealt with accordingly. But for those that do, you should show that love and they should show it back and that way we can stop all this back and forth nonsense and enjoy life more. Being able to have 2 dribble pull-up and master that can make you unstoppable if you practice it long enough and you aquire one or two counters. You really don't need a bunch of moves. Kareem didn't need a lot of moves to get to sky Hood. Jordan didn't need a lot of moves to get to his fade away

It's the same for everything. The humas before has lesser skills than today but it sure helped mold into whatever we have today. A car in 1950s is not as fast today but it helps to build a fast one today. This is not only happening in basketball. People think that whatever we have today just come out of nowhere, unfortunately it's a combination of a lot of things in the past.
The human before has less skill than today?? are you sure? Go back to History and you will see what u saying is not true. Arts (Michael Angelo, Leonard da Vinci), Psicology (Jung, Freud), Politics (Lincoln, Alexander), the list can go beyond. Nothing is new, repetitions or copy is more like is happen today in many aspects of society. Perhaps the actual humans are less capable than our ancestry. Where are the great humans made in our timelife?? where are they?
@@titolopes8679 I will never take away the greatness of the people you mentioned. Those people are part of my point above, where I said they help shape the human race into what we are today. My point is that humans now have more access to information than ever before, making us more knowledgeable than previous generations. A large percentage of people today have access to education compared to those in the past. This is just my point; I did not say we have another Albert Einstein.
I think many younger generation don’t understand what skillful means. You can have one move but score bucket all the time that’s called skill. You can have all the moves, sidestep , step back , shammgod ..etc but still can’t get buckets. Yes, Ant might got more moves but not necessarily means more skillful
Great point. If it takes you 100 dribbles and moves to create a shot, that doesn’t make you more skilled than someone that can get their shot more efficiently. There’s so many players today that can’t even make a simple entry past because they’re not used to players playing in the post as much. It’s painful to watch
Yeah as nba/basketball fans who never would’ve made the league it’s weird to see new players who know nothing about the nba history. I get why they don’t gotta learn about it but don’t be ignorant

You don't get to do that in his position without realizing there's gonna be repercussions. You want the status he wants, you gotta take everything that comes with it, including realizing how much weight your words are gonna carry and how much they'll be under a microscope
Definitely don't think the old generation are scrubs by any means. But let's look at things objectively. In today's era, you have kids coming up with a literal road map of what drills to do, how to train their vert and body effectively, and a plethora of online skills resources. There's a ton of free game that just wasn't available back in the day. You have legitimate NBA trainers making videos about how to get better. Before, all you could do was re watch NBA games and copy those moves in your backyard. If you were lucky enough to have a good coach or people around you that played professionally, you had a massive leg up. This new generation is just armed with a much better skillset at a younger age. 3rd graders can dribble with both hands! Decades ago, having a good 3 point shot was a compliment to your game. In today's NBA, you ain't getting playing time if you can't shoot 3s and that's big men included! Both the skill floor and skill ceiling of the average NBA prospect is just so much higher than it was. You can get into rule changes or physicality arguments all day, but the fact is that you got more young hoopers breaking ankles and draining half court shots in elementary school than there ever was just 20 years ago.
So who is the new Michael Jordan? Did Duncan win a championship in 3 different decades against more athletic people who had access to more advanced drills and coaching? 5 total championships with no skills and a 2-1 finals record against what these young people consider their Goat with Duncan’s best teammates coming from other countries and picked at 28 and 57 in their drafts. Now onto athletics, why has no one with access to this advanced sports science, nutrition, training and equipment recently beaten world records in High jump (1993) , Long Jump (1991), Triple Jump (1995) and 100m (2009) ? Now people have this idea that todays players are way better shooters, why is there only a little difference in decade league average % in free throws 1990’s 74.6 vs 77.8 2020’s and field goals 1990’s 46.4 vs 46.8 2020’s despite their being limited defense and physicality?
You modern kids can do all the drills you want. You still aren't more talented than kids who grew up in the 80s and 90s playing against skilled grown men on streetball legend playgrounds at 11 years old, sharpening their basketball talent with experience, and preparing them for the physicality of 90s NBA. This is why they were able to score 25ppg with VERY PHYSICAL DEFENDERS covering them. Compare that to kids today who grew up on "drills" and "training" where no one is touching you as you shoot the ball from 30 ft, then you go to a professional league where no one can be physical and teams are scoring 140 every game, with average skilled dudes averaging 20ppg because PHYSICAL DEFENSE IS NON-EXISTENT. You call THAT more skilled? No. That's not more skilled. That's being CODDLED to go to a league to be even more CODDLED while getting paid 30 mill to be CODDLED. They're so soft that they can't even play a full 82-game season without LOAD-MANAGING at least 10-20 games out of it. That's what happens when your bones are so brittle because you've never had to work for your shot in your life due to "drills" and "training". Cut the nonsense.
@@azwanazmi1484 Michael Jordan was an anomaly. There are anomaly’s in every era, but there still hasn’t been a player like MJ in the current NBA. He was also so much better than anyone else in the league at the time that he stood out as the clear best player. That’s kind of the point of the argument. The average NBA player is so much more skilled that the parity there isn’t as apparent as it was when Jordan was playing. And that’s not to say there weren’t good players in the league in the 90s because there absolutely was. But two 3 peats back to back is crazy work and speaks to just how much of an anomaly he was and is. Also, Timmy won his last championship in 2014… that was almost a decade ago. The conversation isn’t even the same anymore. I consider Tim a top 10 player of all time - you obviously need skill to be on the top 10. There will always be outliers in every generation. For context, also in my top 10 are Kobe and Hakeem. Both anomalies from their respective eras. The argument is not that there were no good players in the past. The argument is that the average skill level of the NBA has increased over time.

It's a great take from the boys. I'm 40 so I love those 90s dudes. Guys that were super athletic that could score, defend, handle the ball, pass, do post-moves, hit jump shots and run great plays? Absolute braindead take.
The thing is nowadays there is a hyper demand on what you want to watch. In the early 2000s ESPN classic was a television program that shown every athlete that was watched the years before so you will see Muhammad Ali Ronnie Lott, Lou al Sindor, John Havlicek stole the ball, Pete Maravich, Bill Russell Rudy Tom Janovich, George Gervin, Terry Bradshaw, Gail Sears, Johnny United Jordan when he played for the Tar Heels, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, satchel page.
That man is just a big mouthed youngin But if you think about it I think he has a point Like back then it was all about physicality thats why you hear Shaq and Chuck always talk about if you are a big man you should camp base at the post and punish them people and not to stay beyond the 3 pt line basically I mean nowadays players have a lot to offer than back then basically!!!!
A knowledgeable and respectful comment by a grown adult man sounds very different than one from an immature, naive and ignorant boy. Always been a fan of Demar on and off the court.
I think the problem is people confused skill with athleticism and handle. If I can score with out dribbling the air out the ball and do this effectively in the mid post or low post. This is still considered skilled. I think because guys nowadays take sideways step back 3’s and handle the ball better that they’re more skilled. But the 3 time mvp Jokic is dominating the league with the same low post skill set that was used in the 90’s and 80’s only difference is he shoots the 3 ball.
Lets clarify this. I don't think Ant's comment was meant to be taken literally. I think there was a bigger message he was trying to convey, it just didn't come out right. MJ was considered an anomaly in his era. Even though there were clearly other players with skill, MJ stood out amongst the rest. I think Ant's comment was meant to highlight the evolution of todays game compared to MJ's era. On a side note I think it's hilarious that past players are agitated by this comment, because they constantly call this era soft. I think it's an even trade-off. This era is more skilled but less physical, and the past era was more physical but less skilled.
Keep in mind both Eras had certain rules that have had a massive effect on the way the game is currently played. Hand checking and defensive three second rule are two rules that come to mind which had a massive impact on the NBA. Which is why comparing eras and saying one is more "skilled" or the other is more "physical" is hard to do.
90’s were not less skilled, they were just not allowed to carry the ball and travel. Rod strickladnd, van exel, j kidd, penny, tim hardaway, grant hill to name a few. Only “thing” that is more skillsd today are big men who can dribble and shoot better, yet they lack fundamentals of a true big men. People need to stop with this “more skill today” bs. Playing iso, just shooting threes, carrying a ball whilst travel is not a skill.
@@darioja2469 And older players need to stop with the "this generation is soft" bs. You can't have it both ways. If you're going to acknowledge that rules back then forced a different brand of basketball, then all this BS needs to stop about players today wouldn't be able to play in the past eras. The old heads have been able to make comments for years, and because they have gray hair their comments are viewed as wise. But the second a young relevant player makes a comment everybody gets uptight.
@@queyoung6597 but they are 100% right. They soft as they can be. Crying like little girls, back then it was a man’s game. No respect to older players as well, what do you expect? It’s a first thingn you should be teached at home- respect your elders! No one from 90’s was talking smack on West, Big O or Russel. Not a single old head said anything about ant’s game, that kid aint soft and can hoop. But he don’t have right to say such stupid thing, just shows how “uneducated” he is. Boy dunked a few times and tripping he’s MJ
To be fair, the reason the young players are like that because you also discredit them saying them they are soft and such. They were just saying things back in defense.
Bad take by Ant, but it doesn’t make it not true. I think he is referring to the overall athleticism in the NBA compared to back then. Sure you can cherry pick a handful of athletes who could play in todays game but you are talking about all time greats, overall on average most players can pass dribble and shoot now. We Still should respect the OGs but we have to judge them in a vacuum in order to appreciate them.
So, if the average player is more athletic now, it just means and proves that it's equally difficult to succeed as an NBA player. The training conditions, the facilities, the knowledge about nutrition or health, the usage of stats were very different back then, but they were the same for everyone. So pushing through all of that and becoming a star such as MJ, Malone, Scottie, Stockton, Reggie... is the same as becoming Edwards, Morant, Tatum or Luka today.
@@DeshTheDirector It's the same thing. "Skill" is not a magical thing, is a consequence of training. And training has evolved to have players with better technique.
@@Emefak i don’t disagree with you in the point that training has evolved so players are more skilled today, sure I feel you. But training existed back then as well, even if it wasn’t as intricate. Just think about this, the evolution and technology that goes into basketball sneakers today versus wearing chucks and playing full minutes night in and night out. That should tell you all you need to know when trying to compare eras. Respect those that paved the way.

that's just stating the obvious. that will almost always be true in any sport. it doesn't really matter what he was trying to say, it wasn't anything good because he neither elaborated or gave it a foundation to stand on. instead what he really said is that he thinks everyone was a jobber minus jordan.
Except Shaq doesn't hate on the new gen, he's just like you and most fans. People calling Shaq a hater probably have Twitter accounts with SGA avis who constantly hate on Luka (just an example), or Embiid fans who hate on Jokic, etc. ... He has specific players that he picks on, no doubt. But what about all the glowing things he's said about Giannis over the years? You can look at a compilation. What about when he said Steph should be considered for the GOAT convo and better than him all time? Some people think he's being humble but he still said it and has praised Steph many times. And there are plenty of more examples. So what you're saying is simply not true.
I feel that we’re skill players back in the day for sure but now in todays game from early 2000s to now we got 3level scorer to 5 level scorer but the og’s were definitely skilled it’s just today we got more skill and to score the ball in so many different ways
The problem is Old heads expect respect from the young players but at the same time discredit the modern game. It’s not the young players that are always so eager to claim being better. It’s them old players always saying the game ain’t the same, that none of these new players could’ve played in the older eras. At this point, why should young players pay their respect when they are already disregarded on sight.
The truth is there was always talent in the 80’s and 90’s. The difference is there’s a lot more talent today simply because the player pool is far deeper.
Not really. The talent is different. There’s less ppl being able to post up , shoot mid range shots for example. But they can shoot 3s better. They are also alllowed to double dribble and trave… I mean “gather step”. You can’t play strong defence either , so you incentivize different attributes and different type of players become stars. There’s a strong possibility a Steph Curry would have been injured and out of the league before he fully realized his potential in the 80s. It’s just a completely different game now
You're supposed to respect your elders, is this something you were never taught? Current players are standing on the shoulder of giants. The ones that came before them are the reason they get paid these oversized contracts that most of them don't even deserve. That alone is enough of a reason for them to show some respect and be grateful.
Older people have always talked about younger people. In basketball, in life. This is NOTHING new. Guys in the 90s had guys from the 70s talking bad about them. But they knew not to disrespect their OGs.
Bro ants right.. just cuz u can name 5 skilled players in that time don’t mean the whole league was skilled it’s 400 people in the league back then but can only name 5 skilled players so in part ant is right and I’m pretty sure ants talkin bout the 80s when mj first got into the league not the 90s… so in the 80s there was not more than 5 skilled players idk wat no one say 🤷🏽♂️

The problem is that it’s hard as fuck to watch old nba games and highlights. The NBA does a terrible job of showing its old players who were amazing and just as talented if not more!
It's hard, but not that hard... like the guy above me said, the Internet exists. There use to be channels on UA-cam that would upload FULL 80s games, 80s playoff series, 90s games, etc. ... I feel like UA-cam/copyright has taken a lot of them down but there are definitely ways to still find a lot of this stuff, if you're truly dedicated to watching old basketball.
I think a big part of it is also the world is different in that there's so many other "distractions" you can call them, around these young players. Like if you were coming up to be a pro basketball player in the past, I'd say even up to the 2000s, maybe stopping around the 2010s, you were probably OBSESSED about basketball like Demar was or PG was. You'd watch old tapes, you'd know all the OGs, study their moves, basketball was your life because you were aiming for basketball to be your livelihood. Nowadays, there's so many other things for young players to be interested in, so much so that basketball isn't necessarily their obsession anymore. That's not to say they don't love the game or are cheating the game when playing it, they can enjoy the game. But they don't OBSESS about it the same way past players did. They don't know the HISTORY of the game because they don't see the value in studying it. Because instead of doing "homework" and watching old games, they can be interested in other things like even just videogames, music, other sports, etc, or like they insinuated, just having so much money. Past players had money, but even then, they didn't have as much, and also the world just moved "slower", for better or worse, so unless you really liked gambling or something, you could just sit on your cash versus today, you can spend your money on whatever you want, whenever you want because everything is available to you. Like I keep mentioning, more distractions.
My personal take is that the younger guys don’t realize how much of their own game was molded by the newer league and it’s a direct reason why they have the skill they have. So to know that the founding fathers of the league didn’t have much of the game to immolate makes them more superior for the accolades they were able to achieve. Like of course you think step back 3s are a higher skill set when literally these young guys’ whole childhood and adolescence was spent watching great shot creators because by then it was already an art
How may rings he got?? He aint talkin no shit. Ant would try for the rest of his life, but he will never be a top 10 player of all time. I swear yall kids are stupid lmaoo
They’re not hating on Ant its just he’s part of the era that doesn’t look at their past eras and see them as competitors that had no skill but when in reality there were players in that era that had skill
@AustinLoveArc Ima keep it a buck, I watched live playoff games here on yt between the Bulls and Pistons, and the players were a whole lot less skilled from an objective standpoint. They looked uncomfortable dribbling the ball and pretty much no one could pull up or do anything remotely advanced. Obviously there were guys like MJ, Zeke, Clyde...etc, but generally players were so much worse.
Yeah he was so favored that he went 3rd in the draft...after Sam Bowie. The NBA changed the game so much for him that he averaged 28 ppg 6 rpg 6 apg and was 2nd team All-NBA as a rookie. C'mon man. Y'all gotta cool out with the ridiculous talking points trying to downplay this man's greatness. Regardless how you feel about him, MJ was ice cold and one helluva basketball player and y'all just gotta live with it.
What these guys fail to realize is that you can name every team that won a championship in the 80's/90's because you GREW UP around that time. I bet you Ant can name every team that won a chip from the 90's/00's. So its the same timeframe as you, he was just born later.
What these guys don't understand is by ignoring the greatness of the past, they are creating a future of players will ignore their greatness. In 20 years, some NBA player is going to be taking smack about Ant Man and everyone of his era.
It’s not the superstars in 80s and 90s don’t have skills. It the normal guys, the 80% even 90% of players HAVE NO SKILLS, and it’s the God honest truth.
Roleplayers now get payed a lot more so they can focus on their game year-round. Role-players back then sometimes had to work a second job to sustain themselves so they could not dedicate the same effort to the game. The top guys are applicable in any era. Larry Bird would succeed today the same way LeBron would succeed back then.
@@jahimuddin2306 Why they were not skilled is not the topic here, and you’re absolutely right, they didn’t have the “luxury” to train full time. The fact remains, most of the players in 90s and 80s were NOT SKILLED. most of the time they were high AF during the games.
And don't forget Rules and Officiating. Dribbling: it's not like they weren't skilled, but any fancy crossover would have been called for carry Travel: most of Lebron's dunk would be called for travel. It's so much more difficult to jump high at full speed with only 2 steps, rather than 3 or 4 Fouls
Basketball is indeed a simple game at its core, and sometimes that simplicity is lost on players who prioritize flash over fundamentals. When Ant disrespects the OGs, it's clear he's missing a key lesson in the essence of the game. Skill and flair are nice, but they’re the icing on the cake, not the foundation. You don’t need 10 different crossovers or ankle-breaking moves to get separation or create plays. Look at John Stockton-one of the greatest point guards of all time. He didn’t rely on flashy dribble moves or isolations. His mastery came from a deep understanding of the game, knowing where his teammates were, and making the right decisions at the right time. Stockton was the king of efficiency. His game was based on high-IQ playmaking, precision passing, positioning, and timing-elements that are often more valuable than fancy dribble packages. His career as the NBA’s all-time assist leader isn’t built on highlight-reel crossovers; it’s built on understanding the geometry of the court, being fundamentally sound, and reading the defense like a chess master. That’s why the OGs deserve respect. They played with a focus on teamwork, ball movement, and getting the job done without needing to go viral for a highlight play. The game's fundamentals-like setting screens, making smart passes, understanding spacing, and trusting your teammates-are what lead to championships, not just individual skill showcases. Basketball is a team sport, and no amount of fancy handles will replace the value of playing for the collective, rather than personal glory. Ant may have the skill, but it's the wisdom and experience of the OGs like Stockton, Magic, and others who understood that real greatness lies in the ability to elevate your team, not just yourself. They remind us that basketball, at its purest, is about making everyone around you better-not just showing off.
@@kjjr3270 such as what, traveling? flopping? step back? carry? load management? come on now, its not like this generation invented handles or 3 pointers, sure steph is the best, but its strongly correlated with the 3 pt ball era, imagine if kerr was allowed to take 20 3 pointers a game, if steph was so great, why he can't even beat kerr's 3 point % in a season from an unskilled era?

Tim Hardaway had the killer crossover people hadn’t seen that before, but because of him now players that have handles like that are all over the league.
Tim Hardaway and Rod Strickland didn't need to carry the ball to get by their man, and they got handchecked to death. That's why both of them are more skilled than any guy playing today, because these guys carry the ball like it had a handle on it, with 3ft of room. By the way, Rod Strickland made zero All Star games (should've made one), so that tells you how good the PG position was.

Casual thinks that Tim Hardaway brought the crossover to the NBA. Passing on more misinformation.

That man is just a big mouthed youngin
But if you think about it I think he has a point
Like back then it was all about physicality thats why you hear Shaq and Chuck always talk about if you are a big man you should camp base at the post and punish them people and not to stay beyond the 3 pt line basically
I mean nowadays players have a lot to offer than back then basically!!!!
Players back then couldn't do more because there were actual positions not this position less garbage that's on TV today
A knowledgeable and respectful comment by a grown adult man sounds very different than one from an immature, naive and ignorant boy. Always been a fan of Demar on and off the court.
DeRozan talking like he knows players from the 70s. Does he know role players like Dave Twardzik in the 70s?
I want an episode where you guys talk 8-9 minutes about Prize Picks and then 15 seconds about basketball! Make it happen! 🎉
So now disrespecting another era is a problem
This.
Thing about words, you gotta choose them carefully. You can never take back what you say. Remember that...
It's not his fault. Dude doesn't know the definition of skill. He thought doing cross over is what is called skill.

Well said by Demar..
To be fair, the reason the young players are like that because you also discredit them saying them they are soft and such. They were just saying things back in defense.
Hahahaha because they're all fucking soft 😂

If you make it to the NBA youre skilled....
Or if youre lucky and your Dad is LeBron James
ANT opens his mouth without thinking every single time
Bad take by Ant, but it doesn’t make it not true.
Nah bro he said “SKILL” not athleticism. I get what you’re saying for sure, but that’s very different from what came out of his mouth
He could’ve said that there are more skilled players today instead of saying that there was only one back then. My point is more so fixed on holding him accountable for exactly what he said.
@@DeshTheDirector Oh, I agree on that. What Ant said is pure nonsense, but that's kind of his thing 😂 Love the guy, though.
Just think about this, the evolution and technology that goes into basketball sneakers today versus wearing chucks and playing full minutes night in and night out. That should tell you all you need to know when trying to compare eras. Respect those that paved the way.

Old heads like Shaq for example do nothing besides hating on the current gen. Shouldn't be the ones crying when NBA players come with the same energy.
Spot on
Shaq has g14 classification.
@@TheMonjok24 definitely not if he says stuff like that. It doesnt work like that
I feel that we’re skill players back in the day for sure but now in todays game from early 2000s to now we got 3level scorer to 5 level scorer but the og’s were definitely skilled it’s just today we got more skill and to score the ball in so many different ways
Also 80's and 90's basketball they didn't call no touch fouls.
It’s just a completely different game now
In the 80s and 90s, these guys would be called ‘chuckers’

Old players talk bad about the new players, but when the new players talk bad about them it’s weird now? 😂 nah bro
You're supposed to respect your elders, is this something you were never taught? Current players are standing on the shoulder of giants. The ones that came before them are the reason they get paid these oversized contracts that most of them don't even deserve. That alone is enough of a reason for them to show some respect and be grateful.

Demar is a class act and a very good player, too bad it couldn’t work in Chicago.
The problem is that it’s hard as fuck to watch old nba games and highlights. The NBA does a terrible job of showing its old players who were amazing and just as talented if not more!
You have the internet. If kids in the 90's could watch old NBA games, you sure as hell can do more nowadays.

@@jahimuddin2306 Why they were not skilled is not the topic here, and you’re absolutely right, they didn’t have the “luxury” to train full time. The fact remains, most of the players in 90s and 80s were NOT SKILLED. most of the time they were high AF during the games.

Fouls
