    Thank you for sharing. This is the first yatch life video that I have come across that moves from the fantasy of what long term boating really looks like, to seeing it get done. Even if there are obviously steps in between missing, it still is more than I have seen online so far. Will follow your adventures. All the best!

      Paul Paterson - we absolutely agree about Sausalito. One of the most scenic anchorages and towns in the world. We didn't make it in to Morro Bay in the N40 but have been in there before for a fuel pitstop while running our old Ocean 38 Sportfish boat between SF Bay and San Diego.

    Fair question! We brought a couple of folding electric bicycles to give us a little more range in port - but the little trials bike is an electric bike that Cassidy (the kid, not the boat) can ride sometimes when we are on the bicycles.
    It was a last minute decision to through it up on the boat deck rather than sell with all our other stuff!

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  6 років тому +1

      Ictpilot Ictpilot - roughly $10k for the most recent haulout. But it includes some longer interval maintenance like the keel cooler removal and clean out and transducer replacement.

    • @ictpilot
      @ictpilot 6 років тому

      M/V Cassidy Thx. I'm hoping to get out to Dana Point in July. Got to see a 52 and a 40 I think it was in Seattle about a month ago. What do you think your annual maintenance costs will be? Thx for your time.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  6 років тому +2

      Ictpilot - we looked at a 52 recently. Great layout with a lot of room. The lazarette on that boat is huge! Maintenance is really all over the place depending on what breaks. So far since we left SF, we’ve had to replace a few parts on our hydronic diesel heater, a navigation computer, and now the exhaust system on our wing engine. If nothing breaks it’s really just oil changes every 200 hours and bottom paint every few years. The 40 is probably the most economical boat in the Nordhavn fleet to operate - tradeoff being space and speed. One caveat to that is that they recently destroyed the molds for the 40 so you’re looking at a brokerage boat no matter what now with the 40 and depending on condition there could be some expense to get one ready for extended cruising.
      We are expecting (at least hoping) that costs become relatively level as we exercise all the systems on the boat. Boats are boats though and there the unexpected always seems to happen at inopportune times. I’ve heard cruising referred to more than once as “fixing your boat in exotic locations”

    I'm about 95% sure I'm going to do this on a large Lagoon catamaran, but every once in awhile I get swayed by the Nord Havens. When I got to crunching the numbers on the fuel it wasn't too bad maybe 30k to 35k to circumnavigate the globe. Spread that price out over 7 to 10 years and it's not too bad. Since I haven't bought Lagoon yet {2 more years}, I'll Follow Your Story with interest. I hope to see some rough weather Motoring, but nothing too dangerous for you.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  6 років тому +1

      Lorne Serpa - we are big fans of catamarans - both Sailing and power cats. Lots of great open space. To your point about fuel - in a smaller, full displacement powerboat like ours, fuel usually isn’t the biggest cost of ownership or operation. At ocean crossing speeds we can do better than 3 nautical miles per gallon.
      With a sailboat, you’ve got cost of replacing sails and rigging as if west’s, tuning the rig, and still have to maintain an engine, or two in the case of a cat. So depending on the boats that are considered/compared there may not be much difference in operating cost between power and sail.

    • @lorneserpa5888
      @lorneserpa5888 6 років тому

      M/V Cassidy thanks. I've looked at the costs and yes over a good span of time, sails and rigging make the sailing and motoring pretty close. Not enough to matter IMHO. Your choice of boat was my only option. I'm really looking forward to your story/adventures!

    I love your choice of Nordhavn...The 40 or 43 would be my trawler choice. Also the Boston Whaler are incredible tenders, you literally can't sink them. I am sure you could sink one, but it would take a lot of effort to do so. I love Boston Whaler as a tender, although that is a personal preference. The Nordhavn 40 was the first MV of its size to go around the world. Your good for Hawaii on less then a tank of fuel with fuel left over. Even if you do not do passages, this Nordhavn will last a long time between fuel fill ups.
    The combination of the 40 Nordhavn and Boston Whaler combination, in my opinion is the perfect combination. Boston Whalers are not cheap even used if they are in questionable shape. They are easy to fix and work on. I am looking for an FPB 64, which are the terminator of passage yachts, which have a range capacity of 7,000 to almost 10,000 NM, unfortunately there have been only around 10 made. A Nordhavn would be far cheaper as there are a lot of them out there.
    I wish you guys Great adventures and a Nordhavn 40 is a wonderful yacht to explore with.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  6 років тому

      JoJo/Clem Kadilihopper - the FPBs appear to be great boats and I really like the Dashew’s design philosophies. I prefer the Nordhavns aesthetically but functionally the FPBs appear to be incredible. Great sightlines from inside and more importantly, they go FAST for ocean crossing powerboats. The difference between 6 knots and 10 knots is not insignificant.

    Please don’t take my previous comment the wrong way. Just an observation. I’m actively looking at boats and trying to figure it out. Do I want a boat, really, or is it a dream that now seems like it could be reality? Maybe you know the feeling. Dreaming and actually doing are two different things. HAHAHAHA. Thanks for your vids. Another guy said he followed 3@sea. I did too. Great stuff and VERY informative.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  6 років тому +1

      Sail Before Sunset - we appreciate the pass on not being sailors! Actually our boat isn’t that different than a sailboat in that we have a full lead ballasted keel, draw 5 feet, and travel as slow as a sailboat.
      We watched a lot of Sailing v-logs before becoming our journey - and there are a lot of really good ones. But there was no one doing a v-log of actually traveling on a small ocean crossing power boat so we wanted to try to share that it is possible to travel long distances and to places traditionally only travelled by sailboats.

      MrMikewr - it’s powered by an independent 30HP Yanmar engine offset to the port side. They call it a wing engine. Wouldn’t get us anywhere fast but it could theoretically get us home or allow us to make repairs if we lose the main engine.

      Peter Sylves - not an uncommon question. We both had professional careers and worked hard to put money away over the years. We definitely are not funding the trip off of money from selling all of our things - getting rid of things was more of an exercise in removing risk and complication from our life.
      We are not traveling extravagantly by any means. Doing our best to stay out of expensive marinas and keeping expenses as low as possible. Nothing is certain but we wanted to avoid the trap that seems to prevent people from doing something like this that is waiting to long and then never going.

  • @JoeHarkinsHimself

    with sincere respect - if you are going to narrate, you must learn how to use your voice. Learn to modulate, lexpress the natural rhythm of the language and the emotion of the topic. When spoken with interest and engagement, every word does not get the exact same tone and beat.
    Listen to newscasters. I am not saying imitate them. They go way to far in the other direction, with dramatic emotions added to words.
    But all things in moderation. Listen to your opening narration here. Notice it is totally empty of the excitement of this moment of starting one of the most interesting, exciting, dangerous and satisfying voyages you have ever taken. Your delivery (a shrink might say, "your affect") is as if you are reading the phone book (Is that why they no longer exist).
    Get excited and let us hear it in your narration. Bon Voyage. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing this adventure.
    BTW - not every scene needs "background music" - especially when you are narrating. They clash.

    • @CassidysSailingTrawler
      @CassidysSailingTrawler  6 років тому +1

      Joe Harkins - genuine thanks for the feedback. I’m definitely nothing more than an amateur trying to share this adventure and show people that this sort of cruising can be done on a small powerboat vs. sailing. Originally the motivation was just to share what we are doing with friends and family but there appears to be a more widespread interest in what we are doing.
      That said, I am hoping the videos get smoother as I get more experience editing and narrating the parts that need it!
