You get the feeling with Denis that he's going to be a dominant force in tennis when his game is dialed in and the consistency, tenacity, and maturity all come together.
My favorite player after Federer , he has Roger's elegance , Rafa's passion , one handed backhand and left handed . Such a combination , just charming...
I've been expecting this for several years. :-) I've always thought Denis should come to Stockholm to win his first title. It's the perfect tournament for young one-handers with an all-court game to win their first title. Like Dimitrov in 2013 or Tsitsipas in 2018. Besides, Denis almost looks like a native Swede. I'm also glad that Denis' game seems to be really maturing. The return of serve is much better, the volleys are better, the backhand is excellent, the forehand has more variety and stability. He's also improving tactically, he's more patient in the rallies and waits for the right opportunities to attack. I hope he keeps improving, he can still become a top player if he manages to play like this more consistently.
@Robinson Crusoe the game of tennis is (1) serve, (2) volley, (3) over-head, (4) baseline stroke and (5) stop ball. You have an all-court game if you score points using all five strokes.
Denis is, by far, my favorite player from the younger generations. His backhand is a thing of beauty. He's a lot like Stan Wawrinka in that he's equally dangerous off both wings. If he has a weak side it's going to be due to a loss of accuracy not a loss of power.
I have played on that court while i was in the stadium studying for my tennis trainer certificate and i got to say that the eco makes you feel like Del Potro with your forehand xD
Been following Shapo since that disqualification and I knew he'd mature. This title proves it. Just mentally determined all around. And that jumping backhand is absolutely mesmerizing.
His forehand looks way more compact and controlled. Allows him to play more of a cross court game with less errors, more points won. This is what his game needed. Kudos to his new team.
Such a good player to watch! Aggressive tennis, capable of hitting winners from both sides. He will only get better with that determination :) Looking forward to see how far he can go.
Go Denis! Great job! Hard work pays off, I wish you many, many more successes like this one, and even bigger ones in your career. Stay humble, but very hungry. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎾🎾🎾🏆
Well done Denis! I've noticed the improvements in his game (service returns, 1st serve%, patience in rallies) since he's teamed up with Mikhail Youzhny.
Shapo plays high risk tennis - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's satisfying to watch but that won't get him to the top 10 or to a Grand Slam. He needs more consistency and more tactical rigor. I hope he gets there.
Federer used to make a ton of mistakes when he was twenty. I think shapo should maintain his level of velocity and risk and build consistency without giving ground on his agressive playing style. If He manages to play the game he plays now but smarter and with less errors on a regular basis he'd be hard to beat, i think that's his Coach's goal and it should be!
It is not by hitting like everyone else and consistently you are going to be top 10. You must have something better and that takes time to get consistency on.
I think Shapo has the highest ceiling of the next gen, but the nature of his game will make him more inconsistent and he'll likely take longer to mature into his game.
Such a sold ball striker. When he figures out when to use, and when not to use, certain shots he will be a top 5 fixture. Plus, he is not bad to look at... so handsome.
Amazing RPM on that single hander! Even with all the advantages of the two hander, has got two offer, those players can never put that much work on the ball. Shapo is treat to watch!
You can see that in every match with any one-hander (including Federer, Thiem, Tsitsipas, Wawrinka, Gasquet or anyone else) against a two-hander: the one-hander always has much higher average topspin backhand RPM (typically it's something like 1500-1800 for two-handers and 2100-2800 for single handers). There are very few two-handers who can come close to one handers in terms of backhand RPM (Nadal, Auger-Aliassime, maybe Fognini). This is one aspect that's always ignored by commentators and experts. Ironically, the topspin one-hander is often called a flat shot, which is completely, totally wrong. The one-hander, especially cross-court, is a "kicker", much like the kick serve. The typical modern two-hander is much flatter (which is a natural result of the stroke mechanics). The one-hander is less stable and weaker in defense (including the return of serve), but the free arm allows for much higher topspin and sidespin, sharper angles and more power when hit properly, which means it can pull the opponent off the court more easily in rallies.
Great win for Shapo. He showed some guts and heart out there and signs of a champ. Hope this takes a bit of a pressure off his shoulders and gives him a bit more confidence to start going deeper in bigger tournaments. Side note: Either Swedes don't know tennis, or they are very subdued people on the whole. I feel like there were some awesome shots and points during the match, and they barely applauded!
really hoping he can give shape to his yet unripe tennis to be on par with Zverev, Medvedev and Tsitsipas and compete for important titles in the future. Managing his tennis and making it costant will not be easy but i hope he can do it, if he does he will be amazing to watch.
Consistancy and maturity in tactics (a problem so far vs Djokovic eg) is developing. Belief always been there. Or did you forget he beat Nadal TWO years ago? :)
"Finally," he's thinking... Such a terrific player, now he's adding something new: confidence and a real fighting spirit. ps; please take off the hat ! (I'm sure that Sebastian Grosjean cringes now seeing old videos...)
Congrats to Denis. Now onto the subject at hand. 3740 RPMs on a backhand? Better question is what is his average RPM on both strokes? Would like to see if his average can match Nadal, Thiem and Zverev, just because it’s a rare subject. Many talk about how Nadal generates more topspin than the average player on groundstrokes, and I would like to see where he is at.
The only person I seen that have such a good back hand is Federer, his is not as powerful as Shapaovalov its accurate, but Shapovalov back hand is both accurate and powerful.
So happy for shapovalov 😁 I really admire his playing style It is something special, unique That guy Will be a grand slam conetender in next 2-3years no doubt about it💪
Happy for Shapo and his first title ... but it doesn't really mean much to expect from now on, because ... let's be honest ... he didn't have to face a very tough opponent to win this title ... although talented, he remains an unstable and inconsistent player ...
Hi :) yes it's true of course. His "motion" is so high risk. BUT, Daniela, re easy opposition, it's a good start to build confidence, winning a small event.
Denis has been using it for a long time, it's almost a routine shot for him, but there are older one-handers who have been using it before (Thiem, Dimitrov). But Denis is using it more often and his version is the best.
Vicious one handed back hand. Big serve. Big forehand. Volleys well. Moves well. And yet something is missing in his game . He has been losing a lot up till this tournament. Frankly he is an underachiever. Not disciplined. Sometimes not focused. Reminds me of a left handed Warwrinka. It took stan awhile to mature. Maybe same thing for Denis.
