Today we are in Rijeka! A beautiful city located in the Northern Adriatic Sea, in the Kvarner Bay. Rijeka is definitely known as a port city, but it's so much more than just that! We were very pleasantly surprised by Rijeka when we went exploring.
The city is rich with history, beauty, nature and even has a stunning castle with the most breathtaking view of the city, the river, the bay, and beyond!
Our first stop was at the famous city market. It was so much bigger than I imagined it would be. It has sections for fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, canned items, dairy items, and even a beautiful flower market!
Next we noticed the National Theatre, which is identical to the one in Zagreb (because it had the same architect). Rijeka's National Theatre is 10 years older than the one in Zagreb, but they're both absolutely beautiful and full of detail.
We then wandered through Korzo, which is the main street in Rijeka. It's where the locals gather, have coffee, people watch, meet with friends, etc. It's kind of like the heart of Rijeka.
Along Korzo, you'll also find the famous clock tower, which has really become a symbol of the city. The clock face and the coat of arms are original from centuries ago.
One surprising thing we stumbled upon was the old Roman settlement of Tarsatica, which dates back to around 5 A.D. It's incredible that they have these ruins right in the center of the city!
We also stopped at Sv. Vitus Cathedral in Rijeka. It's very unique because of it's round floor plan / shape. The cathedral took over 100 years to build, and it's a stunning baroque structure.
Trsat Castle was the next destination in Rijeka that we went to go find. You can drive up to the castle, or you can take the Petar Kruzic Stairway (some refer to it as the stairway to heaven), which has 538 steps to the top. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with the most picturesque views of the city, the river, the bay, the sea, and everything in between! It's truly spectacular.
We stopped for a beer at the castle (there's a cocktail bar at the top), and had the best table in the whole place, with the most scenic view we could have asked for!
Our last stop in Rijeka was the Peek and Poke Museum. This was a very fascinating place, with old computers, gaming consoles, any kind of old piece of "technology" from 1960 onwards. Our guide Josip walked us through the whole museum and did a great job telling the true stories of all of the "old" technology.
We were very pleasantly surprised with Rijeka as a city to explore as a tourist. There was so much more to do than we ever thought, and it's a very beautiful, historical city that should be on everyone's list!

Where is in Croatia your Home?
Shoutout to you for pronouncing everything well
Thanks Bojan! :)
Burek Kod Brace is a legendary place to get food after a night out. Everyone used to know where the night ends - At The Brothers. :) You did a great job describing Rijeka.
Hi Duska! Thanks for your comment, I'm so happy we stumbled upon a good, local burek place! Glad to hear it's a well known one :) We enjoyed it!
@@RoyalCroatianTours It is "THE" burek place. Their shop used to be in a very small street shaped like a hook very narrow and secluded a few mins away from there. The store was more of a burek bakery place - there was no other products. We could see them through the window make the dough and throw it over their heads into these giant circles. There used to be people waiting for burek in front of the store all the time in particular during the night. :) It is the most famous place and the best burek makers !
@@curiouskittycat5977 Love it!!! That's awesome. Thanks for sharing!
E moja ti, nije to vidjelo bureka!
my wife is from Croatia, i am from Barcelona and living in the uk! we miss so much going to Croatia because of covid, thanks for your videos!!!!
Hopefully Covid will be a thing of the past soon, and you'll be able to travel again soon!
It's so interasting to see how Sarah is excited and enthusiastic about everything while her husband is a typical croat, just like ok it's nice but so little emotion involved, taking everything for granted. All of us croats are like that, used to having such a beautiful country, while Sarah sees beauty were 90% of croats wouldn't. It would just be ordinary for them. Just a fun fact.
:)
In general that' s the Balkan nurture, it's just ok. :-)
Than you for such nice promotion of our city!
Our pleasure :)
Hi Sarah. So glad you loved Rijeka. It's where I spent 25 years of my life with my Croatian husband and 3 children. I miss Rijeka so much but I am in daily touch with all my friends there. My husband misses trsatske stepenice most of all so I was delighted to see them in your great video. Love your videos. Thankyou so much.
I am glad you were in my town Rijeka, 🤗💙.
We were really impressed with Rijeka!!
Good video, you forget to mention the largest event in Rijeka which is "Riječki karneval" (Rijeka Carnival). You need see when Rijeka people go crazy :)
That's true!! We plan on doing a part 2 video in Rijeka, so we'll definitely include that detail on the next video :)
When I first moved to Slovakia my friend came to visit from Wales where I am from and we traveled by train to Croatia via Budapest and we each flew home from Rieka and we stayed there for a couple of days and we too were so surprised at how charming it is. Rieka is also river in Slovakia and whenever I hear Rieka I think of our trip. I loved the outdoor pool above the town where you could drink great cheap beers with a view! Also, our National theatre in Bratislava looks so like the one in Rieka! Thanks for another lovely video and bringing back some happy memories - O must return with my little Slovak family in the future.
:) Lovely!
Rjeka on Croatian is river to .
You have so much similarities between Croatian And Slovak lengvich . Slavic
Next time you're here you should definitely visit the Astronomical Center Rijeka and the new City Museum at the old Sugar Factory. There you'll se a few stories about all "firsts" that happened in Rijeka, like the first torpedo and torpedo factory, the first use of iodine tincture in medicine etc. Also, did you know about the pet cemetery, the third one opened in Europe, just after Paris and London?
Rijeka has so much to see!! I think we'll need to come back for a week to cover it all :)
Tamara Smokvina, thank you for the tips, I'm planning a trip to Rijeka in a few months time.
I very much like it that you pronounce the city correctly.
Thank you so much! :)
@@RoyalCroatianTours You're welcome. It's a rare thing to hear English natives pronounce other language's names, places and such in the right way.
Highly appreciated.
Very interesting and informative! I passed few times through Rijeka but never knew what to see there. Thanks for very useful information. You are very lucky to have Baka and Dida looking after the babies, so you can have a day trip alone from time to time. Fun for all!
Thanks Lily! And yes, it's really nice to be able to take a day trip here and there when Baka and Dida can watch the babies!
I am so proud, thank you for this video! You have to visit Opatija too.
Thanks so much!! We did a video of Opatija a couple of weeks ago! Have a look at our channel :)
My dearest Rijeka❤️

I ♥️ Rijeka
Bok ljudi ! Bas mi je drago da ste posjetili Rijeku i uzivali u nasem malom gradicu :D Thansk for visiting my city :D
Pogledao sam nekoliko vaših videa do sad...
I just came back from vacation in Rijeka! I love that city, although it could be more accessible for me as a wheelchair user... but I love the atmosphere, the harbour, Korzo, local restaurants and pubs... oh, and coming from the highway from north side offers one of the most beautiful views to the see I've ever seen! I hope I'll come back soon. Greetings from Slovakia/Slovačka :)

Thank you for this video of my hometown! Next time you visit be sure to check out molo longo, underground tunels, more than 100 year old stadium Kantrida and small fishermans houses next to it, biggest park "park heroja" on Trsat, Governor's palace, belfry that is "bent" a bit like tower in Pisa in front of oldest church Assunta... 😊
Great! Thank you so much for the tips for our next visit :) We do plan on going back in the spring!
@@RoyalCroatianTours Also, on a day I would recommend taking 1 morning to go to Vojak, the top of mount Ucka(overlooking the bay as well as entire Istria all the way to Italy ) INSANE views :)
Awesome vid- commentary is too cool - love the chemistry between you- the view from the top of mount is impressive-
The pivo was a nice break. Lol

Thank you!
Doci cemo opet u proljece, i napraviti cemo jos jedan video.
Great video!
I would love to see Rovinj
Great! We're planning on going to Istria in early spring, so we'll cover Rovinj and a bunch of others in the region! Stay tuned :)
Would be great if you make a video about Zadar!! Greetings from Germany
Coming soon! We're planning to go sometime in the near future!
Have you been to the sea museum?
They have preserved one of the original lifejackets from the Titanic! A must see!
I used to work in Rijeka for a Year.
It's the city with the most various number of national minorities in Croatia. (About 20).
I have a feeling this channel will blow up eventually, my prediction is next summer. Great editing, cool music, exceptional content and most importantly fun, happy and beautiful family. I suggest you make a 15 - 20 minutes long videos. Who knows, maybe in the future you will own a tour company, this is actually a great foundation for something like that. If you will ever need a tour guide, I dunno... a camera guy or anything in between, consider this my job application. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Zagreb
Haha, thank you so much for your kind words and sweet comment! And we appreciate your application ;) We'll definitely let you know if we're in need! Veliki pozdrav iz Zagreba :)
Thank you for this video, it's my hometown😊

Next time, you should definitely visit Rijeka carnival !🎭🎭
We'll have to come back for it!
AMAZIINGGGGGGG, KEEP UP
Thank you so much!!
Šteta da niste posjetili:
2. Torpedo nije spomenut, to je top prica
3. Guverneova palača: u kojoj je smješten pomorski i povijesni muzej
Next time visit maritime museum in Rijeka because there is the original lifebelt that took part in the rescue after the Titanic shipwreck.

Yes!! We're planning to go in early spring. Definitely lots to see there!
Perhaps the most beautiful part of Croatia
@@grandmastersreaction1267 It is definitely incredibly beautiful!
Dobri ste bravo kao i Rijeka !
Rijeka is my favourite city in Croatia
Thanks for your comment! Yes, we're actually planning to do a little tour of Istria this spring. You're right - so many sweet towns, villages, and beautiful scenery all around!
Istria, the region that before WWII belonged to Italian people for thousands years, where only after the exodus of 350.000 Italians our places were occupied by Croatian immigrants
@@davidetoffoletto9981 Lol, sure thing mate.
@@davidetoffoletto9981 my croatian family and villages have been in Istra for over 300 years. More interior but nevertheless.
You're exaggerating a bit. Istria coast is bilingual and we respect our Italian compatriots. Wars and changing of empires are never fun, Croatians know that just as much if not more than anyone. Long live peace.
@@daniel72122 so, If Italians were the majority in the Western and Northern part of the pneinsula, how do you justificate today the presence of Croats in the cities of that part of Istria? I mean, where are the Italians that for thousand years lived there? I remember you that Croats people arrived from the Russian steps around the 7th-8th century, when this area was longed populated by Latin people
Super video 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
Thanks for a great job ..! It remains still to make a second visit in order to include other interesting places in our city ... >Cheers ..!
The reason those two national theatres look very similar is because they actually have the same architects, Hermann Helmer and Ferninand Fellner. They actually designed buildings all over Euorope and you can definitely see it when you look at the designs.
One thing I would have mentioned is that Sv Vid is protector of Rijeka. Also there is interesting symbolism with lions books open/closed on Trsat. :) A story for another time. :)
Interesting about the symbolism!
Good information
Thanks!
Nice video,I saw 1st time.ok I ll subscribe your channel🙂. I am watching from italy !!!!
Thank you so much :)

I also like Rijeka but I haven't been there in many years. My cousin,Kazimir travels there every year.
Hi im from Rijeka and it rlly is so pretty❤
So, you should also know that locals will also tell you that this is a city where you are always walking uphill. It's kinda true. Oh, and I live just at the top of those steps on which you are standing at the end of the video. Very nice.
You live in a beautiful place!!
Wow, haha. I go to school in Rijeka and it's wierd, in the positive way, to see it on the video here. :)
We love Rijeka!!
@@RoyalCroatianTours Yeah, I love it too. Do you know how Rijeka looks during massive rains? It looks like a river. Everything's flooding and it litterally flows. It is amazing to watch if you're not stuck on the road in traffic or something. There is a slogan among people that says " Volim grad koji teče".
Will be visiting by ship.

Actually, burek is not "Croatian traditionally", but it is widely accepted and popular here. It originates from Turkish/Bosnian cousine.
