Bondi Junction stabbings: Joel Cauchi's parents 'extremely sorry' after son's attack

  • The father of Joel Cauchi, who carried out a knife attack on people at a mall in Sydney, has said he is 'extremely sorry' for the victims. Andrew Cauchi told reporters: 'I'm devastated ... I love my son. I made myself a servant to my son when I found out he had a mental illness.' He said his son's apparent targeting of women could be explained because he had wanted a girlfriend but had 'no social skills'.
Joel Cauchi's mother, Michelle Cauchi, said her son would have been devastated by his actions had he been in his 'right mind.' 'My heart goes out to the people our son has hurt,' she said.

Why? They raised him. When it's any other group the comments wouldn't be nearly as forgiving, understanding or appealing for the family to be left alone. Yet, when it's a pa le, suddenly there's compassion, excuses of mental health, asking for the family to be left alone.

@@jacer4 You act as if schizophrenia is tame. They had a moral obligation to report him when they started targeting women. They knew about it and were able to describe his interactions in detail. The way they excused it as "he just wanted a gf" is gross. If someone shows a pattern of being a genuine threat to the public they CAN be restricted. They CAN be reported even if there is no immediate danger. Stop acting like a couch lawyer and arguing for the sake of arguing. Go research this yourself.
You are able to stand on a moral high horse because it's not your family affected... I hope and pray you experience the same and people make excuses telling you you're over-reacting when you ask for justice and improvement of the system where parents are allowed to be inactive/soft on these matters.

We must ensure that people with severe problems go into adequate care. Not only is it too much for parents to manage but the person suffering with such issues is a danger to themselves and others unless they are receiving proper medical and psychological care. Society needs to value the importance of facilities and care workers as well as education on and simple access to resources to identify those with progressive and aggressive mental health problems.

So it is more than likely, that the medication he was put on was totally inappropriate for his case. The fact that he was seriously stumbling after having eaten, could indicate that he had taken some medication with his meal. There should be a toxicology report on what was in his body that day.
