Offbeat travels back in time to July 16, 1979, 30 years past, to figuratively relive reggae legend Peter Tosh performing a devastating live set at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
The concert was performed in The Casino which is mostly known for having been burnt down eight years earlier and memorialized in the Deep Purple song “Smoke on the Water." --------------------------------------------------------
The band:
Lead Guitar: Darryl Thompson or Ed Elizalde
Rhythm Guitar: Mikey Chung
Bass: Robbie Shakespeare
Drums: Sly Dunbar
Keyboards: Robert Lynn
Keyboards: Keith Sterling
Backing Vocals: The Tamlins
Peter Tosh and his band Word, Sound and Power were indescribable. The first time I heard "Pick Myself Up" from the Mystic Man album, I was walking home from school. The music was blaring from a nearby house. I was only nine years old at the time, in my third year of primary school and with very rudimentary English. Despite this, Tosh's music spoke to me on a deep level. I was so moved that I stopped and turned back, walking into a stranger's yard to ask about the music. The young man playing the vinyl explained that it was reggae and Jamaican music. I sat on the front lawn in his front yard and listened to the Bush Doctor album on repeat for hours. My family and neighbours were concerned and organised a search party to find me. They eventually discovered me sitting on the lawn, completely captivated by Tosh's music. Even today, more than 40 years later, every time I hear a song from the Bush Doctor album, I am immediately transported back to that same feeling of captivation that I felt as a child...
😢😢😢😢 woooooow can just imagine your poor little heart one love straight from the heart stay strong knowing only love shall live on that's the greatest thing in life bless up yourself always in the eyes of God 😢😢😢😢
Wow my brother pick myself up has to be one my top favorite song of Tosh to this day at work I mumbled that song in my head at work when I feel things are not going right.
😊

No phones. Just a happy crowd clapping hands❤❤❤
I wish i could give one of them a phone to record this amazing concert in high quality
Even had an Asian in the band.
0:59 going on my lords music and peace 2u
Only if our youths of today could look to men like these that stood for something
This man was before is time
Im a teenager. If it wasnt for Peter Tosh's influence, i wouldn't have began playing the drums. When i was about 8 years old, this music really interested me and got me to start playing.
my 7 month old son only falls asleep listening to peter sing and he loves this video! it is a masterful performance from a true legend!
The "Pick Myself Up' rendition was such a classic. The best I have ever heard, wonderful performance from the legend.
yesssss, from the way he stretched the first “If it’s looooove...” you knew it was gonna be great
A performance of the highest order.
Peter always meant what he said and sang with meaning and feeling...King of Reggae...Social Justice advocate...Voice of the weak, poor and vulnerable...
Last respectable theist.
Lll))ll 'll llllllllllllmlllllllm 'll
@@user-ox8ln2np4v what?
Peter Tosh! Sly Dunbar! Robbie Shakespeare and all others in band and crew! Amazing!!! Where is my timemachine!?
Peter was a another prophet we did not recognize, but allowed to be crucified! He was and is and will always be Jah messenger! Rise In Power Ohene Tosh!
Fiona A you got that right
Ye man
Srila Prabhupada was busy saving souls in America at the same time, the age of Aquarius was still strong back then
Very true peter was a prophet
Phopet is religious made up crap.
Philosophy and Ethics are beyond your small clown mind.
i met peter at a club called negril in nyc in the '80s when my band was trying to make it, playing the few reggae clubs the city. he was patient and humble when i tried to give him the soft-sell, promoting my fledging st. croix, reggae band... he was a talented man. lonny starr
Wow RIP brother Tosh.
G
It is estimated that Sly & Robbie have played on 200,000 songs recorded!! I can believe it. It's either them or Roots Radics backing every reggae record that came out of Jamaica from 1978-1983.
High water mark for music of man
The unapologetic, Unappreciated, Peter Tosh.
Lambsbread jah peter tosh
Tosh is an amazing front man and this band is smokin. He died so young. He knew many wanted him dead. He gave his life for what he believed instead of changing.
Chi é che lo voleva morto??
Duly noted me friend...I saw Peter live at the Roxy in LA in the late 70s when 'Wanted' was released. He emerged from the curtain wearing a white tuxedo with tails and a top hat! The Roxy is an intimate venue, so the band was bare bones. They were terrific and yes, in that moment, 'Tosh was at his best and I will always cherish the memories of that performance! Jah Rastafari!!!
My obsession with this show, the best ever.
Peter tosh is an excellent artist who believes in happiness for all knowing nooooooo one should be treated better than others regardless of the color of the skin knowing we all have feelings just like anyone else who wants to live in peace and happiness RIP gone too soon Peter tosh the lord thy God will take care of you amen 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢you will always be loved straight from the heart you're one in a trillion 😢😢😢😢
Day the dollar die. such good lyrics touching to the spiritual core. Great works Mr Tosh !!!
the dollar is dieing now rite in front of owe face
He was right and visionary about so many things. Prophetic. I wish he could have lived to see the actualization of his visionary dreams coming true today as we live & breathe. He is timeless and powerful and profound and unapologetic. Full of revolutionary insistence but full of grace too. I hope the stars in his eyes look down from the skies and are synthesized in great realization, validation and glory vindication.
My heart is bursting with love and appreciation for Peter Tosh today, on this 15th day of March 2023.
When I grow up I want to dance like Peter Tosh!!!!
@@ianhedge604 The dollar be taking it's last gasp of grasping debauchery 2023.
Best reggae concert of all time. 100% 😍😍😍😍😍
This is a video I can never stop watching. Ever. Peter Tosh was indeed the toughest and the truest voice of reggae.
+mukhtar akpopirebo maybe the toughest but the latter is reserved for bob
+bob of zimbabwe That's your opinion and I respect it. My opinion is that Bob is the most advertised or marketed. His colour was a huge advantage too. In terms of rhythm and apt messages I prefer Peter. He doesn't speak in parables. Always straight to the point, which is why he did not sell well. The Matrix will sell anyone that favours it's strangulating and racist system, just as they marketed Michael Jackson who felt the black man's nose is inferior to the White's I don't see anything special in Michaels or Bob's songs.
If Peter had Caucasian heritage his story would have been different.
Again its only my opinion, not my religion.
+mukhtar akpopirebo are you serious bob Marley was not marketed well at all his music was banned on most stations in the us songs like war, who the cap fit, Africa unite, Zimbabwe, ambush in the night and as for parables tosh's songs where no more complexed then bobs well runs dry was a love song and brand new second hand was talking about a loose woman so if you are to have a opinion have a factual one
+bob of zimbabwe Like I said, it's a matter of perspectives. I love both Bob and Peter, the former for his melodies and the latter for his forthright lyrics. On those songs you mentioned they were well understood by Peter's target audiences and there is nothing like hidden meanings there. Peter also had his fair share of bannings and even beatings that Bob never experienced.
There is no exaggeration in saying that Peter was as good as Bob though not as popular. i personally dont equate excellence with popularity.
+bob of zimbabwe marley wasnt as militant as tosh people feared tosh
Peter was the best! The master of Reggae Music! He took the music to heights that one could never believe. A great musician and singer he was!
