I just inherited a 2003 Buick Century Custom with the 3.1L V6 with only 48K miles on it. The last 3 years, the owner neglected damn near everything and did no maintenance and trashed the interior. I have no idea what took place on the interior, I had to replace the entire carpet. Removing the seats & pulling out the original carpet was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Replacing with new carpet and professionally cleaning the seats & hard surfaces & headliner has proved wonders! After updating and doing all required maintenance items and de-tarring, de-scratching, and polishing the exterior, the car looks like it actually does have its 48K miles and not 248K miles.

Bought my 2003 Century from a friend for $3200 in 2009. It had 60K on it and was in near new shape.
I had to put very little $ into for mechanical repairs until 2019- 2020 (135K miles) and it cost me ~$2K, so I had 10 yrs. with little cost.
Then in 2021...the cooling system for the engine and the entire AC both had to replaced as well as the rack and pinion and shocks which cost me a total of ~$4K. The car runs great..engine and trans solid. So, I've had it 13 years and the cost of mechanical repairs has totaled no more than $6-7K or ~$500 per year. She been good to me and I've been good to her...still looks new (no rust, live in SOCA). My plan is to keep her until I go....it's a contest now.

SO HOW DO YOU GET IN THE CAR WHEN THE BATTERY IS DEAD IF THE DOORS ARE LOCKED?

The driver side still has a keyed lock, not the passenger side.

I love my '99 Century. Same color as this one. Unfortunately, I have to get a new one because the undercarriage is too rusted to repair the brake and fuel lines anymore.
I bought my Buick Century '99 in April 2013 at 80,000 miles.
Only major repairs I ever had to make were front suspension, rear suspension, some kind of coolant/heating thing.... Each of these repairs cost $400 to $600. That was about it for major repairs., not including front brakes once, spark plugs/tune up once, a few alignments and new tires.
Some things have been wrong with the vehicle for a long time but did not inhibit it's awesome drive ability. Power windows stopped working like 3 years ago. Mileage gauge went out a year or two ago. Still has been driven great.
If you can find this vehicle with little rust and lower mileage, below or near 100,000, I recommend this vehicle.
It really does have a lot of cabin and trunk space, as this video shows. I have been able to haul soooo much over the years.
My mileage gauge went out I think almost 3 years ago at 150,000 miles. Again, I bought it with 80,000 miles. I would estimate I put on at least 100,000 miles on this vehicle in 6 years.
Great car. And I always thought I got great gas mileage out of it. I previously had a Mercury Sable for 4 years and I have to say the Century got waaayyy better gas mileage.
If you thinking about buying one of these, I would DEFINITELY recommend that you do, especially if it doesn't have much rust.
Good luck. Hope you get one and have a good experience!!! Only thing you have to worry about with these is maintenance that can eventually be expected, such as shocks, struts, brakes, exhaust, tires, alignment, oil changes. That's about it. My air conditioner still works great!
Ahhhhhh..... ok, ok.... I forgot to mention that my steering sort of went out about 2 years ago and that I have to steer hard, or "lack power steering" when steering to the left.
Also, my heat/air blower gradually started going out about 2 years ago. Meaning that progressively, I had less blower options for my heat/air. I am currently only able to have the highest blower option available. I cannot use the lower blower settings, only the highest.
I don't care though. I'm still grateful I have had this vehicle for 6 years and that it has been extremely reliable, apart from the times it needed essential repair.

Don't forget to change your manifold gasket before it starts leaking coolant. The 3.1L V-6 does this. Should not cost more than $1,000.00.

I have an 04 Limited... It is so outdated compared to the competition. (I bought it used in 07) A 3.1L V6 with only 175hp? 4 cylinder Accords, Altimas, Camrys, etc made the same power or more. The interior is bland, the gauge and radio cluster is so outdated and lacks alot of motor indicators. The speakers are paper thin and sound terrible. The window motors are of poor quality and constantly need to be repaired. The car is still running with 138k miles (2019) with occasional transmisson jerks when shifting gears. The leather seats are the only good quality of the interior cause the rest is made of cheap plastic that easily breaks or cracks. If I could go back, I would have bought a japanese competitor. This car virtually did not change when it first debuted this body style in 97 and lost options like sunroof, digital climate control, etc. It is no wonder why the century was discontinued in 05.

I just bout an '04 Limited with 113K as a second car and I appreciate it as a traditional American car! I really wish they still made cars like this. Unfortunately everything is trying to be a carbon copy of the Japanese and European models today. For those of us that appreciate a smooth riding American car with a front bench seat and styling in a somewhat traditional modicum are sadly ignored. I had to drive my brother-in-laws 2011 Camry for a few months after totaling my 2018 Yukon before getting this vehicle and I HATED it. I sure didn't see the quality materials inside all the Auto editors boast about and the sound of the 4 cylinder motor was pathetic, but it did put out a lot more power then the Century's V6. The ride was better than I expected but not as smooth as the Century.

Apples to oranges, can find examples of Buick in much better condition with much lower miles than any of the similar year models of the cars you mentioned with good reliability and ride comfort.
