For a guy who built himself on being a warp speed shredder, these days you see him noodling a lot more blues based, soulful licks, then exploding into shredder phrases that surprise you, and are placed with taste and excellent choice. His musical maturity astounds me.

Ralph Machio already won the duel against the devil. he beated the devil so bad that he became a spiritual guy, one of the most respected guitar virtuouso ever.
I saw Paul play with Racer X at Jezebels in Anaheim when he was about 18 years old, he was all the talk in the So Cal scene. But I think Mr. Big tempered him, and he took his cues from Eddie Van Halen who never did the incessant noodling himself.

I can't stand his tone from the last decade or so, too muddy, soft, no bite, doesn't work for his playing. His abilities are always on point and fantastic but i miss the sharp shred tone he used to have, the last time he sounded good was around 2010 when he was experimenting with single coils.
Paul Gilbert is the guitarist I would take to a duel with the devil. He possibly is the best shredder ever, and yet still a virtuoso in any genre you can think of.

I think Paul just hears music differently than us meer mortals. To nail all those "in-between" and slightly out of tune micro tones to match the vocal is just beyond amazing. I've always been a fan, but this is like next level.

DIO may have been the greatest to you, but given the sum of parts that make a good singer, DIO didn't have it all, nor in exactly the same way as others, and a portion of it is also subjective to the listener. He was great for sure, but I wouldn't call him the greatest, and there's no real way to narrow it down to just one "Greatest singer" anyhow. I can say that on "Sad wings of destiny" Rob Halford gives very many singers of varying styles a run for their money. He uses every technique in the book and then some on that album, and much of it is totally 🤯!
Paul is far from the most talented guitarist out there. Very far. He plays fast and that is about it. All his best songs of his entire career can be counted on one hand.

Best living rock and metal guitarist is Paul Gilbert - the articulation of what he is doing is incredible. I was a big fan of him shredding but he evolved into what looks like the best 🙏. With Eddie, Randy, Dimebag gone , now Paul Gilbert holds the torch 🙏.

Very cool interpretation of a classic Dio song. Paul is obviously one of the greats..I still get goosebumps from Vivian Campbell’s playing on Dio’s first 2 solo records. His tone and touch are incredible..not to mention it’s difficult to copy his unique voice and phrasing. Viv is often overlooked in the discussion of all time greatest rock/metal guitarists but he’s right up there in my book!

Nice cover. I know everyone sounded great and it is a showcase of Paul Gilbert's playing skills and his new signature model Ibanez guitar, but the sound engineers did a great job on miking the toms and snare so the final mix-down of all the drums and cymbals sounded great.
I remember watching a video of Paul Guilbert back then and it made me drop the electric. I was so discouraged that I switch to acoustic and classical. Luckily, nowadays I am back to playing electric and more encourage to practice when I watch vids of him and other shredders.
What a fitting tribute from one legend to another. R.I.P. Ronny James Dio I saw Paul Gilbert play for Mr. Big at the now extinct "Rocket Club" in Tampa. There were about 20 people. As a bass player it was fantastic being with my best friend from high school, also a bassist, standing about 6 feet away, just watching Billy Sheehan's fingers, trying to figure it all out.
I'm sure it's great working for Sweetwater but that has to be a top day for everyone involved. Demos are useful and fun...but jamming on some Dio with Paul Gilbert must've brought out the kid in everyone.
