    I've been a Clinical support worker for the NHS almost a year, in care work for almost 17 years. Anyone considering a career in care... Do it! It's not just a job for me anymore, It's a lifestyle. So glad to see someone who loves the job as much as I do. Joining the NHS was the best decision I've ever made. I can't wait to start work and sometimes go in early just in case I miss anything. For the first time, I feel valued and that my opinion matters.

    Hey Laura,
    I feel like we’re really similar in the sense that I’m a physio student and going to be starting bank HCA/CSW job soon! Both are extremely rewarding but in different ways! Im wondering how it feels having a little less responsibility as a HCA? As I know on placement we get to take the reigns a bit, whereas from what I’ve seen, HCAs always need to be accompanied by a nurse?
    How do you deal with the stress of both roles? I’m going into third year and wanna make sure I can handle a work life study life balance!
    Can tell you’re v passionate about patients and healthcare, it’s great to see!

    • @lauraslife453
      @lauraslife453  5 років тому +3

      Amy, Sorry My response is so very late.
      We are/were then yes! For me it took some getting used to but after a while you get used to it. It majorly depends on the wards/location you work. Sometimes you will still have a level of responsibility (In charge of 13 pt's and get them sorted) and this can work well especially when you know what you've got to do.
      The hardest part for me was often being on a one to one being stuck in a room all day while they sleep or whatever. Feel very unproductive on one to one's.
      HCA's aren't always accompanied by a nurse. Depends what you're doing. I've done a lot of stuff on my own but this is all simple stuff like washing and dressing, toiling. However you won't be able to cannulate or anything without additional training and then you may need a nurse to sign you off. Same with observations.
      I found bank very helpful. Working when I needed to but also making sure my uni life and work wasn't impacted. I would say the stress of work is often from staff instead of the situation. However do make sure you spend time either on the journey home or some other time to process just like you do during placement. I found placement to be sometimes more stressful as I wasn't always allowed to deal with pt's by myself when in learning disabilities community. Therefore work often gave me the time to be independent and also just engage without being observed constantly by my educator.
      Hope that helps. Best of luck!

    Thank you so much for this Video, it was so helpful. I was a waitress and now want to become a health care assistant. I love working with people and taking care of people. I do have one question, which is how long does it take you to settle in. In terms of how to make the beds properly and how to manage 13-15 patients on your own. If the staff in the NHS forgiving in terms of mistakes in the beginning?

    • @lauraslife453
      @lauraslife453  5 років тому

      Hi Leah.
      So sorry for my late reply.
      You're welcome. I'm glad it helped you! I'm glad it was useful!
      To answer your questions depends. If you're bank working. It takes longer to get used to the situation if you are constantly changing wards that is. However if you're on the same ward then it takes less time.
      I'm unsure if you have any past training in health care. If you haven't you'll be unable to get a job on the bank staff. I would say sometimes bank staff get very little training. After about 5 shifts I knew what I was doing because of my past OT experience I was okay. But it would have been very hard if i didn't have that.
      In terms of the bass and managing pt's. You won't be required to do that without training on the ward staff. You'll be eased into it/or should be. It's something you get used to over time and develop a skill to doing when you know what you're doing.
      And your finial question. Depends on the mistake. Bed making isn't such an issue. But all id say is, if you don't know, ASK!!! Never touch medication or oxygen (Especially) unless trained to do/told specifically what to do.
      Best of luck! Having been both a waitress and HCA I can tell you the latter was much more rewarding!

      2) Alwayd listen. Both to staff and patients. Often patients know more than you think and elderly need a hand held sometimes.
      3) follow the handover!!! Thickened fluids and oxygen etc. Can kill someone if not correct.

      I think an Apprentiship would be a really good idea for You! I've heard about them and the planning happening for them. Best of luck.

    Hello, are you only alone for 13 patients? What happen if care assisting is wearing glasses? I am thinking to get a job as a care assistant from gap personnel job agency, but I have to think it over. This job agency represent some homecare, and in my opinion work conditions are not to good because they charge for a single room 80 -90 pounds a week, a salary is paid monthly, every 10th, and mandatory courses are charging too. What do you thing about courses, should they charge them? Regards from Poland.

      Hi. Not completely alone as there are other staff arround and it depends on the ward as some wards maybe differnt however yes. I am the sole person to help 13 patients Some times.
      Unsure what you mean regarding paying for courses and I'm sorry. I dont really understand the rest of your comment.

      @@lauraslife453 Thank you very much for your fast replay. I have got a job from job agency from the UK, and I am waiting for skype interview. And if I pass it, then I will get a job. I have never been working as care assistant, and I must to develope my skills. An employer will organise some courses, and my questions is. Who is going to pay for mandatory corusers? An employer or worker? Thanks very much.

      @@zbysiu100 Well good luck with your interview. Yes. I know some people (British and other nationalities) who have worked as shop attendants and then decided to go into health care. So experience isn't always needed however is better and from experience agency prefer experience. Standard hospital staff generally the hospital organise it and they pay you for doing it. That was the case for me for my mandatory training however with agency this maybe different. I would imagine your employer should pay as it is a requirement for your Job however best thing to do is ask at the interview. Hope that helps you. :)

      Hca are always short and bank are constantly hiring.
      Therapy assistant people dont tend to leave the job pluss not as many.
      Your local hospital will always be hiring for hca. Therapy tech maybe 1 every 4 months ish is my experience.

      As a physio they often like you because, even in training you have skills other dont. But they will also want probably full time and I'm not sure that would work arround your course. It didnt for me.
      So they may wish someone whose likely to stay longer. Yes. But couldnt say for sure so it maybe worth a try.
      Re. Hca. If you work bank shifts yes in reason but not if full time employed. I've done a few HCA videos explaining about bank if that helps.

    Tips on how to be employed as a HCA?

    • @lauraslife453
      @lauraslife453  5 років тому +2

      Ask when youre not sure.
      Remember patients come first. Their needs are important and spending a small amount of time with them can be priceless.
      Pass on any information to nurses if you think it's important to. Put it on their heads not yours. Better safe than sorry.
      Don't do anything if you're not sure how to do it especially moving and handling as well as oxygen and air. Etc.
      Hope that helps

      I love my job. It's awsome and the times it's not it's still not too bad.
      I would argue that all jobs have times of difficulty and they can vary between people therefore it's not easy to answer that question.

      You need 5 GCSE's between A* and C including Maths and English or equivalent to what exams you did at school. If you go on NHS jobs and search for HCA anywhere you'll find what it requires on there
