Barzal said the other day that the difference between last year and this year without Tavares is the entire staff holds all players accountable and expects them all to contribute. With JT it was all about him. It’s so wild
its crazy to think about how the isles could go from a laughing stock to a possible guaranteed cup contender in just such a short amount of time. trotz is obviously the main reason but still. its in a way amazing.
I’ve been waiting for this for a while, in the 19 years I’ve spent on this earth I’ve never been more confident in the islanders and I watch every single game excited at what this season could mean for us. Go isles!
I have been waiting a lot longer. The ISLANDERS have captured that old electricity again and are making the nhl stand up and take notice. Nick Leddy is a solider. The attention to detail that the Torrey, Arbour, Potvin regime had, has also returned. Right down to making triple sure the chicken wings and pizza is all set after the game. Our March record for the 2018/19 season may not be the best looking, I am more than confident this team will move through the playoffs. It's only the beginning. ISLANDERS FOR ETERNITY.
@@ianarg 2nd round is a good start. Lou and coach Trotz have this team moving up. They're hungry and the attention to detail is what will keep this team going.
One of the reasons why Trotz came to the Islanders was that their Majority owner Jon Ledecky was once an investor in the Washington Capitals and knew at thing about their personnel.
A lot of people laughed at me when I said the Islanders are going to be a playoff team this year, but I don't know why; just look at Trotz's outstanding record while coaching, his teams have ALWAYS overachieved compared to what they look like on paper...
The Islanders looked awful on paper. I didn't think Trotz would do this. I think Trotz should be considered the best coach in the NHL, pulling ahead of Babcock.
I know I have no way of proving this, but I also predicted that the Islanders would make the playoffs over the summer. I’m a Rangers fan, so it pains me to say this, but I just had a feeling. I knew that Tavares signing elsewhere would revitalize them. I believed in Trotz. I predicted Barzal would take it to another level. I also believed in Ho-Sang. And I really liked Toews for some reason. Lehner was due to rebound. I obviously didn’t predict everything, and not all of my predictions came true, but here we are.
I didn't predict the playoffs, but I thought they would at least have more points with Trotz and no JT. Coaching is underrated, and Pajama Boy is a bit overrated.
mathlover5k I don’t know man; they’ve got 4 lines that are pretty even, and everyone contributes, and plays with a big heart. Maybe because there are no superstars. ✌️
It was all the problems in the mid 90s and the mid 2000s that set the team back from what seem to be for the next several decades. Luongo, a 1st rd pick that became Spezza, passing up on Dany Heatley, Chara, Jokinen, JP Dumont, and a handful of others all getting dumped for almost nothing. Now that Lou Lamoriello and Barry Trotz has the house in order, the future looks bright.
And that godawful Alexei Yashin contract. Still one of the largest contracts in league history two decades later. Most of the problems caused on and off the ice were due to Charles Wang, Mike Milbury, and Garth Snow, who are deceased, gone and gone respectively. Wang did nothing to help the GM situation. Once Milbury was fired, there was nowhere to go but up, but Wang bumbled his way out of Neil Smith, and settled for a puppet in Garth Snow. Wang also moved the Islanders to Brooklyn into Barclays Center, an absolute joke of a hockey stadium that was embarrassingly bad. Milbury needs no introduction, he's perhaps the worst GM of all time. Snow was also pretty damn bad outside of beating the everloving shit out of Peter Chiarelli in trades, which my sister could do since Chiarelli is somehow worse than Garth Snow.
Yer right. DiPietro, Ryan Smyth, mismanaging Nino Niederrreiter, poor drafting in 2011 and 2012, and 2014, Jaroslav Halak, the Thomas Vanek trade and unable to keep Tavares. He lost Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo and sent Travis Hamonic packing But he got them Mark Streit, JoshJosh Bailey, John Tavares, Ryan Pulock, Nick Leddy, and Thomas Greiss, and struck big on the draft stealing Mathew Barzal in that Griffin Reinhart bust. Garth Snow was a D grade GM who lucked out.
Yes congrats to NY Islanders. I grew up watching and meeting Al Arbour (Sudbury) and Mike Bossy during the greatest years for Islander's fans. (I was one ... Nystrom (OT goal), Smith, Trottier, Potvin, Gillies, the best!) But Islander's fans need to show more class and forgive and forget John Tavares. You are always in a winning position when you show class. Take the high ground guys on the 28th!
I gotta say this is the kind of hockey content I've been dying for on UA-cam. You have charisma and editing skills and you subvert my expectations even though I already kinda know what's going on. I just gotta say you earned a loyal subscriber and I can't wait for more content. Keep up the good work man! Very entertaining stuff here imo
Barry Trotz is definitely a big part of the Islander's resurgence, but I think it's more accurate to call it the Lamoriello effect; Lou Lamoreillo brought Trotz in to be the coach. Certainly it didn't take a genius to hire the best coach on the market, but who knows if Trotz signs if Garth Snow was still running things. Lamoreillo also brought in Robin Lehner and Uncle Leo.
The Islanders changed their style of play. They may not have a superstar anymore, but they do have depth, unity and consistency. They are in this for the long run.
HERE HERE!!! GREAT VID! Leddy has one of the hardest shots in the league he's got 1 goal and hit 8 posts 2 cross bars this season so far. That's how many goals he should have.
Great video man. It’s been a rough few decades harder even being I watched all four cups being won and then the dark ages but wow there’s so much to look forward to now
That was an awesome video! Eight months ago everyone in hockey world were pegging the Isles for the #1 draft pick. It's nice to see they are currently in first place and dueling for first with the Caps!
Love your work...you need one on the Montreal Canadiens now...the team seen as a joke going nowhere now have one of the best depth chart in the league, build on the model of Las Vegas and having drafted their Elias Petterson, Jesperi Kotkaniemi...and also Bergevin looks like a genius right now with Domi and Tatar...yeah it need one !
Entertaining … Millbury was an interesting specimen. He was the author of so many unfavorable trades for the Islanders. Remember, he took Luongo with the 4th overall pick (at the time, the highest a goalie had ever been selected), declared he would be the organization’s ‘goalie of the future,’ then, without giving him anytime to become it, selected DiPietro with the first overall pick and promptly shipped out Luongo with Olli Jokinen (another budding star). Chara, yet another one of the game’s enduring stars, was traded with the Isles first pick (which became Jason Spezza) for Yashin. But, I don’t need to tell you this. It must be seared into your memory.
so much for waiting for Ho Sang (hopefully they get something good for him) Glad to see the Islanders finally have good management, really good GM and a great coach again
Excellent excellent video!! As a longtime Caps fan, I was sorry to see Trotz go but am glad to see his success so far with the Islanders-though I'm not surprised. I think he has a way of communicating and getting the respect of the players and getting them on board as was mentioned. And he does this without histrionics like say Tortorella has. Also I do remember the early Islanders and before they won their 4 cups, there were years where they were seen as chokers in the playoffs, losing to Toronto and then the Rangers. Maybe it was the stability along with some key moves that got them over the hump.
I’m still pissed that we decided to pay Carlson $8 million per year and Wilson $5 million per year instead of resigning Trotz. Yeah let’s not resign the coach who led us to our first Stanley cup.
It's very interesting how much in common the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers have in common in both the franchises histories. Each having tremendous success in the early years with players that turned into all time greats like Bossy, Gretzky, Trottier, Messier, Smith, Fuhr etc. And after the success both franchises were competitive for awhile but both suffered years of very similar suffering with ownership, incompetent management, Long list of coaching replacements. The Islanders have finally turned around, but hopefully it won't be a one time thing like it was for the Oilers in 2016-17.
As a life long Capitals fan I was devastated when the Caps didn't resign Barry Trotz. After all those years of frustration and disappointment this was the coach who finally brought the Stanley Cup to Washington. They had their chance to keep him and they blew it.
Knew it would be amazing like they always are and wasn't let down, I would complain about the wait time between videos if they weren't so damn good lol. Keep up the amazing work dude.
I was saying the Islanders were going to be a cup contender in 2018-19... but that was before Tavares left. Had a theory to keep Tavares they had to sign another key piece... Erik Karlsson. Would literally be on Tampa Bay caliber with those pieces. Lou is one of the best GMs right now though
Love the Isles. Trotz was an amazing thing to happen to this team. They still have work to do and areas to improve on but I'm confident that it will happen. Isles and their fans deserve this fun, exciting season. LGI!!
Don’t forget Milbury’s trades on giving up prematurely on top prospects Roberto Luongo and Zdeno Chara. The cherry on top was taking D Andrei Karpotsev who was overpaid and lazy off of the Chicago Blackhawks hands for a draft pick. That draft pick turned out to be Nikolas Hljamarsson (anchor of the Hawks d-man of those championship years).
Gotta say, NHL is on a crazy swing year. Toronto, Calgary, NYI, and, while not to the level of these others... Carolina. Couldn't believe it in Nov that NYI were #1 in GA.
John Sterling......GOAL!...Islander Goal!.... Islander Goal Islander Goal! Mike Bossy tips in a shot from Persson at the front of the crease for his second goal of the night! I listened to most Islander games on a device we called radio back then.
In fact I have a vague recollection of the night that Clark Gillies had a four goal game...(I'm inclined to say it was vs the Maple Leafs...but I'm old...so sadly my memory isn't what it used to be)
I used what i saw in 2016 17 because when Tavares got injured at the end of the season the isles won 6 in a row and on July 1st to July 5th when everyone said the islanders would be a basement team I brought up this fact
You are so underrated man... u deserve 100x the subs bro. Keep up the amazing work

its crazy to think about how the isles could go from a laughing stock to a possible guaranteed cup contender in just such a short amount of time. trotz is obviously the main reason but still. its in a way amazing.
It's even crazier to think they lost Tavares between laughing stock status and possible cup contender.
Laughing stock 🥺😱😡how could you say such a thing

This is great I love it and Tavares now has to watch islanders in playoffs
Haven't watched it yet, already know it'll be great
