Yay well done ladies. I’m nearly 70 and have been doing this for a few years. I no longer save clothes, glassware and dinner services for best, I use them, anything which has not been used in 12 months goes to our local charity shop for someone else to make use of. Xx

Love it! I’m starting at 55. I think it’s easier to be less emotional about it when not immediately faced with a forced/essential move.

The mom and daughter relationship is what is so wonderful about your videos. I was with my elderly mother (who had very bad eyesight) shopping for a light fixture for her home and I was describing the light fixtures to her and we were both laughing and the store clerk said "you two are adorable together". That was 24 years ago and I still remember that moment. You and your mom are adorable together.

I am Swedish and I helped my grandmother with her “Swedish death cleaning“ 55 years ago when I was 15. Maybe the concept became popular just a few years ago, but this has been a practice of ours for generations. I always enjoy seeing your mom in your videos! Beautiful lady

So fun! I am 66 and although I've never read the book about Death Cleaning, I definitely have it in mind as I de-clutter. My parents did not de-clutter and clearing out their stuff is when my minimalism journey took root! I don't want my kids to have to take that on! Your mama makes me lol!

I’m going to have my mom watch this video. She is 84 and I’ve been bugging her to start decluttering her condominium. I’m the only child and I just can’t go through all of her things. I don’t have good health and I’m already drowning in my own stuff. Maybe this will give her a push although we have been discussing it more lately.

I am 35 yr old single woman and started the Swedish death cleaning in 2022. I was a hoarder ( I used the word collector for myself) I have a lung condition and while I might not die immediately, It is overwhelming to keep track of stuff. I literally want to breathe easy...lots of stuff more to declutter including endless flower pots and dying plants. Just putting it out there, ypu are never too young for the Swedish death clean. Love and power to anyone who needs it out there..

Im a single mom with a teenager. I live in S. CALif. . Fatal accidents daily. So I started to think if I pass my son and his aunt will be in charge of getting rid of sooo much stuff. So I started to declutter. Now we are living as minimalist. And so happy I also have a bigger savings account.
I hated getting rid of clothes that still had tags on them, and kitchen gadgets that I don't use anymore. Shoes never been worn, but they were on sale. But I did this because I was thinking of my demise, there is no age for death, so folks let's love our loved ones and not leave them another burden during there mourning time.

I want to do this with my mum so bad. She’s a hoarder of keeping so much unreasonable stuff for the sake of it.
She even has books she’s read and kept 20+ years , dvds for my kids that they will never watch. And like 100s of clothes she will never wear.
She’s 62 so it has to be done.

Children and relatives often JUST DON'T WANT THIS STUFF.
I've had great experiences donating through the Mormons. They have resale shops but also seem to be able to move less saleable stuff on to needy people. I am not Mormon myself but I have found this method to be so helpful and satisfying for the last few years.

I love Swedish Death Cleaning... I used it last year in lockdown to go through my sentiment stuff again.. I always asked "if I died tomorrow, would I want my family to see/read this?"... My answer to old Diaries and letters was generally "no way".. It helped me decluttering 95% for my sentiment diaries and letters.

I'm 67. I started this process 2 years ago when my mom passed. I knew that I didn't want to leave the burden of my 'stuff' to my only child. I've given so much to family members and found organizations that will give things directly to people who will benefit from them. This week I have been working on the final load that I will take to a resale shop.
I had a tall bookcase that I repainted and have limited myself to only keeping the mementos that are important to me. I also bought a label maker and attached comments to alot of items.
Clearing it out is a wonderful freeing feeling. Wish I had done it YEARS ago.

I wish my in-laws had known about this although I’m sure my mother-in-law would have thought that we’d want all of her things. We inherited so many little figurines and they’ve been in a box since 1999. My husband is a bit of a hoarder and cannot get rid of things for sentimental reasons. I cannot understand that way of thinking anymore especially when things have been in a box for over 20 years and could be there for another 30. Through watching minimalism videos I realize that we still have the memories and don’t need to hold on to every little item that is sentimental. I may keep a few very special items but I can declutter the majority. I’m in the mindset now thinking ahead for my son. I’m sure he won’t need or want my high school yearbooks, etc. I don’t want him to have the same burden that I have.😩

Wonderful! I started this when I retired. Pictures were hard but my son said pictures I love will not mean the same to family members left behind. So true. I also declutted deordant I had bought when on sale and realized they had outdated. Now I buy small travel size and replace more often. Linens also seem to multiply so I keep ony three sets...one being used, one clean and one for guests. Probably could get rid of towels for guests,

I just turned 63 this past Oct 30. I started decluttering in 2014 when we were planning on moving house. We ended up not moving - but I had been bitten by the decluttering bug! By the time I was finished, I'm sure the neighbors thought we were moving house lol! Just call me Ruth Less!
Something I discovered - my grown children do not want ANY of my crap....including the boxes of stuff I saved for them from their childhood! Only ONE of my children wanted their 'Baby's 1st Christmas' ornament! I've already gifted my (real) gold jewelry to my girls.

I am so blessed because it was my Dad who suggested that we start going thru things to make the transition easier on us when he passes. We have given many things to charity and lucky to have a recycling center that takes all electronics and cleaning items etc for free. I found some cleaning items that are from at least the 1970's so I wanted them to be disposed of properly.

I’ve recently been helping my mum declutter photographs. And as a result, for my Xmas present this year I’ve asked her to put together a small photo album of family photos - but crucially with ANNOTATIONS! So not only “this is Uncle Ron”, but crucially “and he was your maternal Grandad’s eldest brother”. Because otherwise when she eventually goes I won’t know who any of the photos are of. There were a large number of photos we got rid of because my dad and gran are dead and we needed them to tell us who/what the photo was of. Side note: your and your mum are adorable and hilarious! 😂

I think we need to reframe our thinking about the "passing down of items". we can offer items to our family members BUT it has to be okay for them to say No Thank You. This can help stop the "trickle down" into becoming a "flood down" to others. I'm currently working on my mother with this. It can be a difficult process but in the end don't we all want to be happy in our homes?
