      Caltrain is ordering new Stadler EMUs to replace the entire F40 fleet as well as the gallery cars. The F40s have been around since the late 80s. They will retain the MP36s and Bombardiers, however, for use on Baby Bullet services.

    Neat to see the electrification going in; I'd love to see that elsewhere in the US, but at least for now it seems unlikely.

    Between Millbrae and San Bruno, there is a stretch of electrification that looks ready to use. If you just watched that section, you would think it is electrified already.

    I use Caltrain for years to commute to San Carlos or Belmont. As much I am happy to have train (avoiding 101) compared to Europe this system is very antiquated. The stumping noise, the incessant blowing of the horn is unnerving to travelers. We always try to walk back as much we can and hold our ears closed when the train arrives. You can also see how the train shakes and rumbles on junctions. The trains in Europe pass these at high speed virtually without any noise. Now in 2021, we still do not have the electrification done. Its just so surreal. I wonder if I will ever board one of these new electric Stadtler trains.

    2:37 Can someone explain to me why the caltrain yard is placed in a way to make trains go on a weird shoe fly esque route?

    • @BayAreaRailfan
      @BayAreaRailfan  3 роки тому +4

      Because when they built CEMOF (the yard), the mainline needed to connect with the Warm Springs Sub that comes in via wye from the right side in this video. So, if they built it on the other side, the Warm Springs wouldn’t be able to connect.

    Could someone explain the deal with all the horns and bells to an amazed European, living next to a station or crossing must be a big challenge considering this is a commuter rail.

    • @BayAreaRailfan
      @BayAreaRailfan  3 роки тому +3

      I’ve never been to Europe and I am not familiar with European warning devices, but people in America can get very impatient, especially with our long freight trains. Because of this, it has become commonplace for people to go around the crossing gates when a train is coming. Therefore, horns and bells (that are exceptionally loud) are required at all road crossings, unless otherwise posted, to be sounded for safety. There is also a fear that people can get when they hear the train in the distance, which can discourage them from illegally crossing.

    • @hornshowrailfan2554
      @hornshowrailfan2554 3 роки тому

      I know this is a late response. The FRA requires the engineer to do the horn at all crossings. At each crossing, the engineer will attempt to do the FRA required pattern of long long short long. For multiple crossings they usually will just do what fits. But the engineer is required to do it by federal law.

    Whats caltrain frequency on the scanner and its reporting marks?

    • @BayAreaRailfan
      @BayAreaRailfan  4 роки тому +1

      Caltrain 907 Caltrain’s reporting marks are JPBX, for Joint Powers Board. There are a few frequencies. “Road North” (Santa Clara to SF) is 160.81500. “Road South” (Santa Clara to Tamien) is 161.55000 and can also be used for Caltrain switching operations. There are a few more for CEMOF and repeaters and other under-the-radar uses, which are as follows: 161.07000, 160.48500, 160.63500, 161.50500, and 161.56500.
