Most helpful I've watched hundreds of UA-cam videos this year as I'm applying for both SSDI and Oregon PERS retirement disability... I realize each state might vary slightly but the big picture info was so helpful!!!
Thanks Cara! We work hard to make these concepts easy to understand. We're so glad to hear it helped. Let us know if there is anything we can assist you with!
Years of service calculates into your regular retirement at age 62. For example, if you worked for the federal government for 10 years before receiving disability retirement and were then on disability retirement for an additional 10yrs, then your regular retirement at 62 would calculate like you had worked there for 20 years. Hope that answers your question!
What about if someone has a Strokes? How much percentage would they lose for having survival benefits? How much would the survival percentage if the provider passed away? The medical and life insurance would the federal government still pay their portion, or would we be responsible for the full amount?
Hi Vicki, While a broke in and of itself may not get you approved for either of these benefits, the stroke may cause long-term issues that could qualify for these benefits. If you are approved for Federal Disability Retirement the OPM will pay the government's portion of your health insurance. Can you clarify your question about Survivor Benefits? Thanks for the question!
@@DisabilityRetirement Thanks so much for answering my question. Also if someone has a stroke and still has the use of all extremities, but can not concentrate, at work and has no motivation and is sleepy all the time. Would you be able to qualify for federal disability? My question for the survival benefits is that when you go on disability you get 40% of your pay, after the first year, would you get paid less then 40% if you have survival benefits ? If something happens to the employee while on federal disability does the survival benefits continue for the surviving spouse? Thanks so much for all your webinars!
@@vickischram.darter.7290 Thanks for clarifying! You have a few different options you can elect when approved Federal Disability Retirement. You can elect a Full Survivor Benefit, a Partial Survivor Benefit, or no Survivor Benefit. Details below: Full Survivor Benefits = 10% reduction of the Disability Retirement annuity, Spouse Receives 50% of annuity upon your death Partial Survivor Benefits = 5% reduction of the Disability Retirement annuity, Spouse Receives 25% of annuity upon your death Full Survivor Benefits = No annuity reduction, no spouse benefit If you were to pass before your spouse, then your annuity would go to them. However, remember that if your spouse were to pass before you, then the money that was reduced from your annuity will be lost. We hope this helps!
How I get pay from federal employee disability, social security and I have a 100% P&T veteran disabiliti.I got approved from OPM in September and social security disability in December.I know that I don't have to pay taxes on the Veteran money, but how they pay Federal disability and social security ?????

Carlos, thanks for the question. If you are on Federal Disability Retirement and go over the 80% private sector earnings cap, your benefits will be paused. However, you can begin to receive your annuity again once your earnings return to below the 80% cap. Hope that helps!
I retired from the federal government with a disability. After 20 years. I have diabetes and other medical issues. Can I get social security. Can I receive both. Thanks 😊
@@dannyo7690 i am repying to your question because i think i read it before. You should apply for SS disability. if you will be approved, your 1st year annuity will be OFFSET with SSDI. You will get 40% from Fed and 60% from SSDI after one year. Hope that helps!
I was just recently approved for FERS Medical retirement, but I’m required to apply for SSD. If, I’m approved for SSD, my medical retirement will decrease. Can I withdraw from SSD without it affecting my medical retirement? I asked social security and they told me if I deny or withdraw, they notate it on there. So, what do I need to do to make sure SSD doesn’t approve me?
Applying for SSDI is a requirement set by the OPM. You cannot withdraw your application without it affecting your Federal Disability Retirement. But the requirements for SSDI are pretty strict and there is a very low earning cap, so if you are not permanently disabled you likely will not be approved.
@@DisabilityRetirement thank you for answering. FYI I have emailed the address given to me after separating from here recently and get no response. So this is greatly appreciated.
I'm grandfathered in with Compensation pay. 32 years. I was taken off of OPM Disability and put on Compensation with a statement that I'd be retrained and put in another position. That never happened. And now OWCP states that my injuries are pre-existing but now do to old age. And OWCP pawned my Medical off to my GEHA Insurance.

Thank Wanda!
Thank you for putting this on.
Thanks for watching! We hope it helps answer some questions.
Great video, can I get medical retirement / federal disability retirement and VA compensation pay at the same time?
Thank you in advance.
Good question! Yes, you are able to receive Federal Disability Retirement alongside your VA payments. Thanks for the question!
What about the employee’s years of service (lets say- 20yrs), is it also added to disability retirement computation on top of 60% & 40%?

@@DisabilityRetirement will they use the same base pay for the rest of the time the person was disable (age 62), or what base pay do they use?
