Devin, thank you very much for the info, as it happens I am on SSDI at age 64, 65 in july soon to retire next Sept. Your discussion was a blessing to me as it confirmed that I ended up better off on disability then just retirement. Lord bless
I want to thank you for this post. I am 63 and am going to apply for disability due to having 4cabg and now taking medication which makes me very tired and nothing like I used to be. I just sold my business last year in part because I just have such a difficult time dealing with it, even before the surgery. Pointing out the difference between retirement and disability is something most people wouldn't know. Thank you.
I was in same exact situation what Davin Carroll is saying about. I decided file for Disability Benefits years ago and went through some difficulties but I am really glad that I did. It took me a while but did received Disability Benefits and will be getting Full Benefits when I reached full retirement age. This should be very helpful video for someone who is in similar situation and I am really glad that Davin Carroll brought it up.

If your disability is approved the monthly benefits will increase to the amount of your full retirement amount. FEW, FEW, PEOPLE KNOW THIS!
Is disability only for injuries or can it be for chronic medical condition that’s considered a disability that’s causing other medical issues that keeps from doing my job?
Hi. Can also apply for retirement if I’m applying for disability I’m in my early 50s but I’m permanent stationary disable due to cervical spinal stenosis? Thanks
I'm 63,I retired in February because of a stroke I suffered on Xmas day. I am receiving regular SSI benefits while awaiting my disability claim to be approved. As a matter of fact, I was asked on my application if I wanted the early retirement benefits while waiting for the disability to be approved. I have no choice because I have no other income and can't wait for 10 months or more for disability approval.
It took me over 3 years to be approved for disability benefits. I believe it had to do with being under 50 yrs old. So I found a law firm that took my case after others turned me down. "Disability Justice" law firm stuck in there even when I gave up. They gave me the strength in life again.

I need to file in a month and I do not feel at all that it is charity. My contributions are at $240k, how can that be welfare? I’m anxious about the process, but I have to start the journey, no choice.
You seem like a legit person but I clicked on your help link yesterday and filled out the information and instead of help I have been bombarded with calls from mortgage companies and others. Thanks a lot!
Good video. Short summary.....applying for disability EARLY.....yields a $ benefit amount EQUAL to what you get at your full retirement age. My wife became disabled at age 59-60, and got the full 100% retirement age ( age 66) benefit at that time, by applyng for disability benefits. When she approached her true full retirement age ....at 66.....she continued to get this same $ amount....but it was "re-labeled" as "Retirement" benefit at that time.
Wil Ferch the guy does not know what he is talking about. You have no choice they will take you off disability and make you retire at age 62. They did it to me and my brother. See i had ssi my brother got DSI you can not get on disability if you are at retirement age.
@@edwardpuddy4793 ...I'm telling you my wife got disabled at 59 and she continued getting her full $ ( same as FRA amount)benefit from that time right thru her becoming 66....only difference was that the label of her income changed from being called disability to retirement benefits. So why doesn't he know what he's saying?... not true.
my wife had back injury in her lower back and her cervical (neck) she got surgery thru her neck, the doctor told her, she never can work normally, of course she was scary for the second surgery because she has 50/50 be worse, so she applied for disability, we took a lawyer service and after many paper work, medical evaluation from SS and court, 3 year total , she gotten her benefit at 56

I'm still looking for the answer to my question. If at 62 I received early retirement for only one month, the next month forward I started SSDI would my SS benefits be reduced at my full retirement age?
If you're single and disabled, you'll need to have saved enough money to live on for a couple years plus pay an attorney to help you fight for disability payments. That's tough for most single people. Less difficult if you're married and have a working spouse.
So I have a question I already have Social Security disability. I’m kind of messed up and I’m 62 if I retire at 65 early retirement well I keep the dollar amount I have now for my Social Security retirement because I also have a pension when I lose my disability amount
My wife has had both hips and rt shoulder replaced. She has also been diagnosed with spinal issues. She cannot work. She has applied for SSDI 3 times and denied. We hired a "specialist Attorney" and the SSA gave her one year of disability because she got a job last year working on a computer from home. Now the Company she was working for closes down next week. So now she is unemployed and the Hope's for another job in the area she was working in is dismal at best. She's 59.
In my situation, im 47 and can retire with the number of years, which is 28 years. I became disabled with a 2 level lumbar fusion. I was told that it would be best to retire 2 years early because it would not affect me receiving my workman's comp benefits. So i can get both at the same time.
Could anyone please explain to me how it is that people who pretty much never worked is able to receive SSDI payments for life? I'm not trying to be a smartass, i really don't understand how this is allowed. Please and thank you.
People can collect on an ex spouse ssa record...or if only worked a few years, but made the 40 credit's required to be fully insured to receive ssdi or retirement or spouse that just stayed home to raise the kids, can collect ssa or ex spouse benitfits....
I filed at 62 because I am single and couldn't afford to be without an income and hadn't. saved enough to live on....now I don't have insurance....living on 840.00 a month

I definitely was thrown into early retirement even before my paperwork was completed. I simply asked for information on early retirement disability package, doctor submitted her paperwork and before any time in the mail was to my shock, a happy retirement check! This amount has had devastating effects on my being! I was wronged in every way and in between! Wrong wrong! It's ruined my life only because"they" knew of my injuries and needed me out of the way as I apparently was a risk! Again wrong!

If i file for early retirement i understand from your video that it will increase once disability is approved. My question is once i reach full retirement age it converts to retirement. Just let people know the "I" is for insurance. Would you have your spouse deny life insurance payments because someone told her you died too young? Would you turn down a auto settlement because someone tells you your car isn't the right kind? SSDI is very difficult to accept if you have taken pride in what you did, as most people do. I know, at 36 i lost major use of my hands because of the work I did. I took years for me to accept what this had done to my life, my ability to enjoy it, and my pride. You are not alone. If you are disabled, you DESERVE the fruits of the insurance policy you are rightfully owed because you PAID for it. Please take this to heart and I hope it makes your journey easier than mine. Bless You.

If it's normal SS benefits or SSDI payments it's based on lifetime earnings so they must be low earners or claimed benefits early, or a combination of both. If it's SSI there is a cap of around $800 and change for single....higher for married couples.
Disability payments are based on the same calculation (mostly) that the retirement benefit is based on - an average of lifetime earnings. If earnings are low, the benefit will be as well.

Hello Devin I have a friend who is a corrections officer in the state of New Jersey. He is 56 wants to retire due to illness. He has a kidney condition that now requires dialysis 3 times a week. He has a pension and he will get full medical when he retires, he's worked 20 years. Due to kidney illness he was discharged from the navy at a young age. He has the paper trail of doctors, medication, etc... My question is who should see for help in applying? attorney, accountant, apply online? I can help him but this is too important to make any mistakes. If anyone else can help, thank you
Did he file for a full VA disability claim? If he’s found to be 100% disabled. Due to the military and he said he has documentation and he was discharged for it then he would receive anywhere between 1300 to 4000 a month.
If you can no longer work because of health reasons, why not file for temporary state disability, while you are applying and waiting for permanent disabilty?
Takes 6 months just for a decision. Took me 4 years to get it. Denied, appealed, denied, won in letigation. 4 yrs. Daughter denied, court and lost, court again and won. Took 4.5 years. If you don't have a Dr that has your back you will not get disability
It depends on the dates you declared. It is true there is a 5 month waiting period from the date you have been deemed disabled, but depending on the date you filed and the date of determined disability, it is possible you have already served the 5 month waiting period.
@@peanutsassyathena does disability only apply to injuries or does it apply to medical illnesses too? you seem to know a lot about this topic from reading some of your responses so thought I would ask

SHE STARTED RECEIVING SSI BUT ONLY FOR $58 PER MONTH. HOW CAN THIS BE? WE ARE TOTALLY DISCOURAGED & WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELPFUL ADVICE!
Your wife needs to go to social security office and open her ssdi claim under your work record your benitfits won't change...she will get her own check but more money.....
SSI is sort of like welfare. SSD means you paid in the 40 quarters. SSI means you did not. I would tell a young person to make sure you get all your quarters in, with a few of them on a higher earnings.
Hi Devin...I have a client (current age 59) who recently became disabled. He has a 5 year taxable disability benefit from work, but any SS disability income will offset the amount he gets (which would bring him to age 64, FRA is 67). I was thinking that is still might be beneficial to file for disability benefits (even with the offset) due to the ability to start the clock on the full benefit amount before FRA, and the ability for the wife to activate spousal benefit eventually, also the tax situation may be more beneficial with a portion of the disability benefit shielded from taxation. Am I missing anything?

Is it true you have to wait 5 months to collect SSDI if approved. Thank you
It depends on the dates you declared.
I RETIRED EARLY AT 62 RECEIVING 1119 PER MONTH AFTER MY WIFE HAD APPLIED FOR DISABILITY. SHE WAS APPROVED JUST BEFORE SHE TURNED 62 BUT SHE ONLY HAD 30 CREDITS! SHE STARTED RECEIVING SSI BUT ONLY FOR $58 PER MONTH. HOW CAN THIS BE? WE ARE TOTALLY DISCOURAGED & WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELPFUL ADVICE!
Your wife needs to file under your ssa record....
Your wife needs to go to social security office and open her ssdi claim under your work record your benitfits won't change...she will get her own check but more money.....
@@biatrizboudreau1149 SHE DID & QUALIFIED FOR $520 PER MONTH BUT THE STATE KICKED HER OFF MEDICAID SO WE'RE NOW WORSE OFF. GO FIGURE!!!!!!!!
SSI is sort of like welfare. SSD means you paid in the 40 quarters. SSI means you did not. I would tell a young person to make sure you get all your quarters in, with a few of them on a higher earnings.
i want to helped by a lawyer
Welfare isn't you never work for your benefits, 42 years working hard and paying your taxes, never will be walfare.
So this client obviously was making below $1200 a month in his job because you can’t file for disability if your monthly income is higher than this
Hi Devin...I have a client (current age 59) who recently became disabled.
Derrik Hubbard, CFP At face value, that seems to make good sense to me.
@@DevinCarroll Hi Devin! I wanted to let you know that I would like to be considered as an advisor resource for your Facebook Social Security group. You mentioned you are working on a project to refer others to advisors. I didn't want to make the comment on Facebook to "advertise". Please let me know any additional info you need for consideration. I am a National Social Security Advisor.
If you take disability and have a 401k how does that work
robert willis Perfectly fine. Most of those who qualify for SSDI have worked for many years and often have a balance in their retirement plan.
I've heard you can't draw Social Security disability and have retirement savings
@@robertwillis6691 yes you can.
@@robertwillis6691 SSI is needs based. SSDI is based on your work history.
Thank you I didn't know that
I am on disability and turned 62 in May. Do I need to do anything ?
Nope!
No you don't do nothing !!! It changes over to ss at 65 66 and you still don't do nothing
Make sure you keep going to the doctors and stay on top of any CDR's that might come from SSA...
I know this is an older video, but I wanted to express my slight disappointment in that your free phone call to ask questions about social security is only available to people who have $500,000 or more in assets to invest. I thought you were someone who wanted to help the little guy, but I guess that's not the case. I do appreciate the information you share though but boy that's a really high-net-worth to have to build up to!
You are wrong....you can not apply for diability at the age of 62.....you can at 61....but when you hit 62 disability SSDI is no longer an option.
So you can't at 62?
I think that people who are getting SSI..which is applied at social security but paid out the state welfare budget.....Where people put no or little money in the system....SSDI is the money you worked for and put in the system continuosly and get funds out of the federal social security budget...... There is a difference.
It comes out of the federal general budgets. Years ago,it was state.
I've got the worst lawyer ever please do your research !
