So as said at the start....hate making these. But it happened so need to be addressed. the water parameters in this tank just swung so badly very fast. I've never had this before so didn't read the signs that the shrimp were telling me. A few dying initially and then all being completely still...Inow know for the future and can show this to you guys as well so you don't make the same mistake I did. I'm still not sure what caused the parameter swing as all the other tanks are perfect, but thankfully, I seem to be on top of it now.

So I think the reason the shrimp deaths happened is due to the aquasoil. Usually whenever I do a new planted tank, I let the aquasoil age for about a month before I add any livestock. The ammonia tends to spike around week 2, and again around the end of week 3 before it evens out. During this time, I usually get some plant melt and pH fluctuations as well, which can contribute to instability in the cycle and smaller ammonia spikes. On another note, I actually loved the appearance of the algae in Timmy’s tank! At least the parts on the rocks, it looked very natural and helped bring the green background around towards the front 🥰

    • @metalboozeweed
      @metalboozeweed 3 роки тому +6

I agree, especially with Caridina. Usually the active substrates take a month or two to settle down and work properly. I'm not even sure this filter was properly seasoned, it really should have been running in a tank with similar bioload for a few weeks prior, or slowly adding shrimp until it was built up. Suddenly dumping 40 shrimp into a a few week old tank is a recipe for disaster.

    • @Dr_Whoa
      @Dr_Whoa 3 роки тому

Actually the test result is kind of weird. If the tank is not cycled, he shouldn't see the high nitrate unless he is dosing nitrate as fertilizer. I've never seen both high ammonia and nitrate readings like that.
Bio-load is definitely not an issue. I had a few hundred CRS in a 10g before. I don't know how frequent he feeds but it seems like he is overfeeding when he does feed. The way he drained all the water that came with the shrimp and just dumped them into tank also made me cringe a little...

Sad to hear about your shrimp, but not surprised!
Tropica recomends to sysle the soil:
Aquarium Soil is further an active bottom layer that lowers the pH value and slightly affects the water chemistry.
We recommend that you change 25-50% of the water min. twice a week during the first 4 weeks after establishing the aquarium.
They leak a lot of nutritions and ammonia the first days.
Bet that is what spiked it, and killed em.

It's either this or the massive amount of other bio-active substrate compared to all of the other tanks. The solution is to move the shrimp to a cycled tank until this one is stable, not endless water changes. Absolutely no blame on the videographer, we've all done stuff like this when starting out; the lesson learned in this situation should be that any organic material or fertilizer going into your tank has the potential to cause elevated ammonia levels and set off this chain reaction. This is especially deadly with caridina, cause they are super super sensitive to ammonia. Bad luck mate, but the fact of the matter is they're not going to survive in this tank until it's cycled unless you do water changes every freakin day.

"When pH drops to a low level, below pH 6, the beneficial bacteria can become dormant or even die, with the result that ammonia and nitrite begin to accumulate and fish start to suffer. If you have very soft water with a low level of carbonate hardness (kH) this can happen quite rapidly so regular partial water changes are absolutely vital if you have this kind of water." This is a possible reason I am not entirely sure there is more testing is required to make a judgment.

Man that sucks about the shrimp. I guess that's the hazard with keeping a nano tank with soft water. I'm glad you were able to catch it and save most of the shrimp though. I wouldn't be surprised if it was overstocked and that kicked everything off like you said. I think a good general rule is to keep 5 shrimp per gallon unless your tank is super well filtered.

Caradina shrimp need different water parameters to neos ( neos can adapt to caradina parameters) it did look all rushed. Caradina ideally need a mature set up. Not just a cycled filter. Also when drip acclimating them in it would have been better to do it from the tank you was putting them in. 40 shrimp won’t have much more of a bio load than 20. It was pretty much a brand new set up - that’s prob why they died. Should have checked your water tests. GH & KH & PH as well as the others. Also when adding water back into the tank it really should have been dripped back in to avoid any shock to the shrimp. (I only keep Caradina shrimp & im still learning) I like your honesty & willingness to learn & hope you enjoy keeping shrimp but it’s very different to the majority of all your other tanks.

They are very sensitive to the ammonia, I agree that it may have been too many for a tank that hasn't been established very long. A cycled tank and an established tank are 2 different things. I recommend adding an ammonia monitor they have some that stay in the tank it hangs with a suction cup and changes colors with ammonia spike. Also the Bacter AE is really good to add, since it's a new tank especially as it will help microflora grow that's a good source for the shrimp.

Hi MD, I'm so sorry about your shrimp. I know how hard it is not knowing how a beloved fish dies. Sometimes when you put down aquasoil or sand there will be pockets of air in that layer, and what happens is ammonia will build up in those air pockets. If some of those pockets burst from plants being moved, or the tank being shifted, the ammonia will be let into the water column. to prevent this all you have to do is put about an inch of water down on top of that layer and then using tweezers you can stir it all up and get all those air pockets out. I hope this helps, though I'm not sure if this was the cause of your problem. Best of luck

Hey MD, just to let you know that Prime or other dechlorinators can neutralise the ammonia and nitrite for up to 24 hours. So if you encounter another situation like this, you can use dechlorinators until you get the water parameters back in healthy levels. You can test this by putting a couple of drops of Prime into the tested tank tubes, the color should change back to 0 levels.

Unless you have tested the water frequently from the start it will be difficult to pin point the issue.
    1. Filters are not established enough for the bio load.
    2. Ammonia continuing to leach from new tropica soil added plus small water vol will exacerbate this issue.
    3. Sudden increase in bio load - shrimps, food, plant die off are contributing factors.
Recommend, daily water testing for the next week and dosing beneficial bacteria including frequent water changes if levels rise. Or you may also consider adding a small amount of established media or substrate to tank. Just lying it on the relatively new substrate will help.
    Good luck

5:40 "little timmy doesn't produce a lot of waste" I learned, the hard way, that too few nutrients can also cause algae to grow and bloom. The plants quickly utilize what they can and the nutrients that are left over go to feeding algae. The algae can eventually take over. There is an imbalance of nutrients, so the plants cant fully utilize all the nutrients. Like needing to wait for a straw to sip your drink.

I have a suggestion for the Amazon tank. As you use Otocinclus in almost all your tanks you could do something really cool with them in the Amazon tank, as that's where they are from. For some time now I've had my eyes on the Otocinclus cocama or zebra Otocinclus. It's a beautiful fish with white stripes that contain a shade of blue. They are more expensive than say Otocinclus vittatus but still not crazy expensive, here they are 15 euro's a piece and most fish stores should be able to order them in, at least in the Netherlands. I really think it will add that little bit of uniqueness to the Amazon tank.
Also for the rocket killies, I've housed them with blue dream and yellow shrimps and they don't seem to bother them. They might snack on one occasionally, but the shrimp numbers have always been on the increase for me.

    Hello MD,
I just found your channel and i love it.
Even more cause you are honest showing fails. Having crystals Every morning starts with a ltl prayer when entering the room
    With that tank.
I have plenty shrimp tanks with plenty differierent shrimps. But its alltimes the crystals causing this panic moments.
    One day everything is awesome
And they are breeding, but the next day entering the room is like “omg, what happened now again?”
I am most of the time not able to address the reason really.
The tanks are running stable for month and all of the sudden, all babies are dead, or the adults struggle..
Or i for some miracle lost all females while
    The males did well…
Just a short picture of years with crysals….
    They keep shocking me.
    😂
May i ask you for the brand of the tests you used? They look way better than the ones i use.
Please keep doing this channel. I love it.

you should drip your water back into the shrimp tanks when doing a water change, this makes the change in water perameters happen slower

I live in a soft water area and I test GH and KH and use shrimp cubes to get a higher KH to buffer the water so I don’t get PH swings. So the beneficial bacteria doesn’t crash or anything go out of balance. Keep measuring everything in that tank to check it because likely that one water change isn’t likely to fix the issue. Massive spikes like that have a cause
:( sorry for your loss. Shrimp are great but sensitive.
20 isn’t too much if the tank is stable. I have a colony of approaching 40 in 5gal including babies and it’s fine.

40 shrimp isn't a problem. It's how quick you added them, to a small tank small filter, the bioload was too much all at once.

    • @TheJohnGalt1945

40 shrimp have an extremely negligible bio load. If I had to guess, it was the fresh tropica soil that caused the ammonia spike.

Frankly speaking, true shrimp breeders always cycle tank for 1 month minimum, regardless of using everything old. Your tanks are way too new for any shrimps. Fishes can handle but shrimps need extremely stable paramaters. Max 10% weekly wc.

CRS are heavy (Gh high and Kh low... what) One tip for nitr.te control: floating plants. They can handle all of the nitri/ate very well and provide grazing place so shrimp are able to eat some of the surface biofilm. You just have to be carefull when throwing away the owergrowth (cuz baby shrimp love to hide in these)

A small tank is as you said very easy to upset the balance in. Compared to the other tanks it has less plant mass which and more shrimp. So I would at least try to increase the plant mass.
I've had the most success with heavily planted shrimp tanks (mostly just moss and floaters) and doing the 3 shrimp for each liter rule (with the minimum starting size being 10l) I got told by someone that kept and bred shrimp for decades. This way you can maintain a healthy breeding colony with a buffer for if something goes wrong.

I had a massive nitrite spike in one of my tanks once caused by aquatic compost leaching ammonia and nitrite into the water and it took a good month to settle, even with a very established large canister filter. Seachem prime is good if you have ammonia spikes (in conjunction with water changes of course) as it stays active in the water for a couple of days. On the more expensive side but you need hardly any of it.

I guess, the problem was the aclimation period before you put in live-stock. I know you always pre-cycle your filters, but sometimes the bacteria settle somewhere else in the cycleing tank. When the filter is then "cycle" it does not hold enough bacteria colony to cover your new tank. When you then put in a lot of fauna into it, the ammonia spike is going to happen, sooner if the live-stock is great and the filter is sterile, later when the live-stock is great but the filter is a 30% bacterial capacity. I will suggest to always acclimate your tank to 5x live-stock for 2 weeks. This is the average time for the nitrate cycle to cycle once. Good luck in the future!
On another note, just change your water more often, you might loose 1-2 animals, if oyu have sensitice shrimps but its less than 5/25.

Amount of shrimp is not the problem as it's about 10/gallon. Shrimp are very sensitive. Any change in water parameters can be dangerous. It's recommended with neocaridina or caridina to use purified water and add in the proper amount of minerals. Using something like Seachem Equilibrium to get a TDS of around 220.

(Translated with the help of an online translator) it is better to underfeed shrimp than overfeed Them. In addition to the food that you give them, they eat bacterial plaque on plants, dead plant particles. The aquarist bred expensive shrimps for sale, costing more than 20 euros apiece. He told me that he fed the shrimp 2 times a week. Even if you feed the shrimp once every 10-14 days, nothing will happen to them.
The number of shrimp colonies is regulated independently, unlike fish. The number of shrimps is usually undulating - at some point there is a surge in the birth rate of shrimps and their large numbers. Then comes a period of decline.
