L: I had a feeling this "sleeper" was your mystery DAC. Thanks for explaining the sound quality differences with the upgraded op-amps especially the Vivids and the SP's. I just so happen to be able to fill you in on several details you and your readers may be wondering about the Dayzee...because I was lucky enough to get a recent Geshelli eye-opening factory tour when I realized there were only one town over from me. In doing so I met nearly everyone including G/S and GJ...and directly heard this device as compared to their new J3. This is quite lengthy post but if you're interested in this device this is info worth knowing for sure--because I specifically ASKED them the very questions many people want to know! I personally have run into some issues that have kept me from making a decision of what to do for my Oppo 205 "upgrade", but this is definitely still on my target list. Q1. There's no price listed with most references for the Dayzee...What's the cost going to be? A: For an all- plexiglass casing (non-wooden), it will start at $1,200 for the base op-amps. For "simple" wooden cases, it will start at $1,300. I add: they also have a black faceplate and probably my preference, a silver face plate just like probably a lot of your existing equipment. That's a steal in any configuration for the prowess of this device. Q2. Why no i2s? A: Because there's no standard and the timing gets very tricky using it. We work hard to make sure the USB sounds as good as the i2s would. Q3. Do you really have to change out all eight op-amps? A: Yes... it's a different beast from everything else we have. Because it's a dual mono design & the op-amps don't necessarily refer specifically to channels. This is the only DAC where that's necessary. I add: that could be a significant cost to do on this device is opposed to the J3. Q3. Why do you just use a wall wart power supply instead of a linear power supply? Aren't those superior? A: NOT necessary ..according to our $40,000 (!) test device...we show no degradation between the two just using the simpler AC adapter. Q4. Why is the case so much bigger than your typical DAC? A: It's basically two DACs in one case with the mono design. It has 2x AKM4499 and also 2x RCA and XLR out (in addition to 2x Toslink & Coax). All those connectors take extra space and all that circuitry needs extra space to breathe. I add: the larger dimensions makes for some of the nicest woodworked cases I've seen on an audio component--complete with engraving availability. Q5. Is it really only available in the US? A: Yes, at this time, because it takes so long to meticulously manufacture (multiple hours) that we can't risk overloading our small team Q6: How do I set the different filters on the AKM chipset with no screen or menu? A: You don't. We set the "most commonly used/our favorite" one at the factory. However, if you are aware of the AKM options and want a particular one (such as brick wall) we can set it for you during the build process. I was also wondering the different gain controls in their previous products....and whether that carried over to the DayZee. As I suspected, it does not and it's pure signal--the best way. I personally listened with G & S to a J3Pro with the Sparkos Pro 2590 and the Dayzee with the stock TI... and for most tracks I definitely preferred the Dayzee. There's something magical about this that goes beyond the op amps--it really is a beautiful looking and sounding piece of equipment. And oh yeah, last but not least...the family is possibly the friendliest people I've met in the audio industry. All the rumors you've all heard are true :)
Great post, Scott. Thank you! One point I'd add here is that Geno's response about LPSs is regarding the measurable impact on sound. This won't take into account if the impacts of the power supply sit outside of what we properly understand and can measure (which is probably a larger bucket than what we can measure because we don't know what we don't know). My experience with Geshelli DACs is that LPSs do improve the sound by a small amount. Not enough that I would recommend people buy an expensive LPS for a Geshelli DAC unless it's the final tweaks they want to make to their system and things like op-amps and interconnects are all at a level they're happy with.
I really appreciate your detailed informative comments which definitely will influence my decision on which DAC to add to my collection. Great job & contribution to the community.😮❤️💪
I've had my Dayzee for about a month. Its all the things he said. I upgraded to the Sparkos SS2590 and was just blown away. As an added bonus I love how each Dayzee is custom ordered. I got mine in poplar, dovetail wood with pink LEDs. I have not tried single ended yet, just been using XLR.
I called Geshelli last week with a question and he asked if I liked my current dac (chifi) and I told he I loved it. He said I shouldn't worry about getting a different one. Very honorable.
The Geshelli's are brilliant like that. Not pushing sales, just trying to make great products for people. As for the Aus power supplies, it would be good l, but we're a tiny market for them. Keep in mind that the wall warts they supply are all 100-240V so they work perfectly here with a cheap
Thank you for this review! The Dayzee is a stunning DAC. The upgrade that is not small - is to use a linear power supply. The soundstage is enormous and 3D and layered - very often it is spine tingling. Slight correction on the price of the Sparkos op-amps - they offer 15% off if you sign up for their very infrequent emails. And they do have 25-30% sales from time to time.
x8... buut the Dayzee not having i2s settles it for me compared to Cyan 2. Tho it would be interesting to know which one is more resolving considering the Dayzee is more resolving than the Laiv Harmony acc. to Lachlan.
@-Ambos- yep. I feel your pain. I would have loved a wooden case for the Dayzee, but shipping costs... Not being able to get one at all is definitely worse.
So just buy two at a time until you have all eight. All it requires is patience and self control. Besides, it's a fraction of the cost of the DAC itself.
@@MrCambo5150 You "may" have skimmed over my comment without reading it carefully. *If* you buy one or two of them at a time as you can afford it, you *will* eventually have eight of them, at which time you can make the upgrade. It takes more time and patience, but is much easier on the wallet in the short term.
Thanks for the review. Do you plan on reviewing the Holo Audio Cyan 2, which is available outside the US and Canada? I just received mine and started using it and for about $1300 US delivered it’s the best sounding DAC I’ve heard. It has limitations as far as features but for sound it’s excellent. Rock on!
The custom wood dovetail might be enough for certain people too 😁 the price difference is considerable as well. Only DAC worth considering for the rest of 2024 is the Gustard X30! Would love to see you get your hands on one ASAP to go head to head with the Dayzee, LTA and Laiv🥺
Wow the diminishing returns at this level is really apparent. It’s all about the flavor and how much the very minute presentation can be the deciding factor at these levels
at this level 1/2 the folks are replacing dacs for an existing speaker/amp combo where they perceive a flaw in the dac or speaker, sometimes amp. only about 20% build out a system from scratch. so while objectively there are clearly diminishing returns to buying dacs above $500, you're talking about audiophiles who want to get the best for their system in a budget. and $1,300 - $1,800 ain't cheap, but it's actually a value against even more expensive units as the review said. and you're going to be keeping this for 10 years
Hi was waiting for the review as someone who has bought their products before… and was talking to the truely wonderful people at Geshelli about buying one and knew you had one for review ! I am in Australia like yourself and, yes the shipping cost/insurance then import tax really starts to mount up ( not the fault of Geshelli) So I am on the fence about ordering??? I note they now have the Jnog3 which takes the top of the line sparkos? Not sure how much of a jump it is over the Jnog s - I have the chord Hugo TT2 and MScaler in my main system so looking for a dac at reasonable cost for my second system! I know the new Schiit Gungnair is due soon - there is the 15th version of Denefrips, and the Cyan 2 which appears to have some interesting reviews ( but it has a major flaw) …. so ahhhhh mulling over Geshelli a wonderful wonderful company?
Lots of great options! I've got the J3 here for review soon and just posted some comparisons on Patreon for channel patrons. In short, the J3 IS excellent.
@@billparkins3064...and unlike some units, you can use every output simultaneously with no issue. By it's very comments in the instruction manual, that is not the case with the Harmony.
THIS!!! As the potential future owner of a J3 I would love to know how much I am missing out on. I would also like to know if those differences are something I need an expensive set of headphones to pick up on, or whether a decent 2-channel speaker setup could justify it.
I have the j2 akm 4499 and sparkos 2590’s, I wonder how much of an upgrade the cyan is over it if any. Did you happen to review the Holo audio cyan yet?
outstanding review. i appreciate the clear highlighting of the subjective vs objective aspects of this dac and in the excellent company you put this dac in. this review can make me look at this despite the case not being to my taste. hell, i'd buy this just for the dual xlr outputs and the optical/coax daisychaining
If you seriously want one, then give them a call. They can build one custom made to order, so you get exactly what you want. If you have any circuits removed that you don't need (Ex.: RCA connections that you'll never use), it lowers the cost.
My understanding is that you can easily add a LPS just like you can with other Geshelli DACs. In fact, I had asked the same from Neal Blanchard (Dayzee owner, and audiophile engineer) and he responded similarly. BTW, Geshelli recommends using the custom LPS from Pine Tree Audio. I went that route and could not be happier with my LPS. Jesse is amazing to work with, and he had created a fully custom, dual variable, power supply so that I can use it with other gear in the future...i.e., my LPS is fully future proof and is not limited to the Geshelli input voltage (12v). In fact, I use the other channel to power my WiiM Pro Plus streamer 5v input).
I recently visited Geshelli Labs. During a demo of Dayzee, Geno mentioned that using a linear power supply, vs the included power supply, will not improve the sound quality at all.
Just a note about the lack of I2S on the Dayzee: The Harmony DAC does perform its best on the I2S input. I assume you were using the same style inputs on both DACs during your testing (which means that the Harmony was not at its best).
@@Scott-DJ OK, good to know, but that is not what I was talking about. I2S has been getting a lot of traction because, in general, it seems to be the preferred interface for signal integrity. While there are some DACs that get closer in sound quality with alternate inputs, there does seem to be a fair bit of consensus regarding I2S being preferable. The Harmony in particular performs best on I2S.
@@DigitalGrease According to another commenter with a lot of information, Geshelli "worked hard to make the USB input sound as close to I2S as possible."
. There's the 10gig Fiber Optic USB (not Toslink optical) connection available now. It's cheap & uses SFP modules on either end of an LC to LC cable. Say good-bye to copper connections. Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊
If it’s a crime for Geshelli not to ship the Dayzee outside North America, am I guilty by association for living in Canada? Either way, I’m not privileged enough to afford a USD$1,300 DAC… though I might be able to stretch for a J3 Pro. 😊
I am in early process of designing my Dayzee with Geshelli. I am considering 2 monoblock amps to power it but I have a beautiful Sansui 9090 from 1974. Purely from a sound quality standpoint, should i move on from the Sansui or is this amazing relic still relevant in a DAC world?
Without knowing the specific amp, that's impossible to answer. I'd suggest getting the Dayzee into your system and seeing how it all sounds before upgrading anything else.
Thank you for talking about Price “ as if it’s a real thing and exists in real life “… unlike many others who have a “ uhh stupid sense and idea about it”.. Well done sir..
You have not reviewed the Gustard a26. We would need You to do a comparison review of the Dayzee with the Sparkos op amps vs. The Gustard a26. There's a $500 price difference favoring the Gustard. In addition, the Gustard has a built-in renderer for streaming. I've heard the Dayzee with the sparkos op amps (Florida audio expo). Both of these dacs are Delta Sigma with the same AKM chips. This would truly be an apples to apples comparison. I predict that for those who prefer an airy, highly detail presentation, the Gustard a26 would be their choice. For those who prefer a slightly warmer and a bit richer midrange, the Dayzee with sparkos op amp would be their choice. The ball is on your court. Please bring us the comparison. Thank you.
@@PassionforSound Thank you for the response. Hopefully a distributor on Shenzenaudio would be so kind as to send you a Gustard a26 review unit. I've heard the r26 and was not particularly impressed as it straddles the sound quality of a good, but not great Delta sigma dac and a good but not great r2r dac. I can't afford Denafrips Terminator plus or the Holo May Kte, which are the only r2r dacs that deliver the true organic rich sound of r2r dacs, while simultaneously retaining the micro details and open clear presentation of a great DS dac. Thank you.
You are a very demanding person. Lots of time and effort go into comparing audio products, then creating & editing a review. Consider this before making comments like "We would need You to do a comparison review... The ball is on your court"
I think it's fine for people to request the videos they'd like to see so long as they're polite about it and know that I can't always deliver what they ask for. 🙂
Are you sure you didn't mean Sparkos 3602?...when you said 3601? Just wondering. I'm ordering the Burson V2 for the XLR on my geshelli V2 on Wednesday. Thanks for the insight.
Hi, I was just about the pull the trigger on a Denafrips Pontus 15th until I saw your video. In your humble opinion, is this Geshelli Labs Dayzee better than Denafrips Pontus 15th? TIA.
I haven't heard the Pontus 15th, but, having heard the Pontus previously, I'd say they're probably on a comparable performance level, but likely present different sound characteristics so it depends on whether you want the fuller, richer sound of the Denafrips or the cleaner, more focussed sound of the Geshelli.
Question. If you don't use XLR outputs, do you only need 4 op-amps vs 8? Also, there are some very nice-sounding classic single op-amps out there, e.g. OPA627, AD744, if one wanted to avoid spending on discretes.
You need to change all 8 regardless because they're not mapped directly to the outputs like in the J2S/J3. I agree that op-amps like the 627s would be absolutely lovely!
It's important when talking about gear what it's connected to. I have a simple system the wilsenton r8 because of the pre in, schitt freya with Psvane CV181-T MKII, Verity Fidelio. My streamer dac is HiFi Rose 250a, The dac in this I can hear the weight applied to piano keys in songs like High Healed Boys. Without better gear no reason to move up to a Dave or Lina. I did try a Weise 501 I could have bought for 5000 but it didn't add enough to justify the expense as I would have had to keep the rose for streaming instead of selling to off set the price. Only thing that really matters seems to me it fits with your system and you are happy with it. Changing flavors of the day in same category is a waste of money as in these comments some one the factory told them to stay with what they got how honest can they be.
You’ve mentioned something very interesting at 14:00 that brain timing things. I want to know further about that. Have you explained this in another video or is there any place that I can look for more information? Anyway, as always, great review. It’s a bummer that I have no chance to try Dayzee since I live outside of US.😢
I'd love to, but I couldn't provide transparent reviews of equipment if I had a direct interest in a brand that sells amps and DACs. I sell tubes and cables because they're just accessories, but getting into components gets tricky.
Yet another DAC to confuse me. If I decide to try a seperate DAC it might likely be the Cyan 2. At this stage the Eversolo 8 DAC seems good and I have the DAC module in my Accuphase amp.
I live in NA but I will not be buying the Dayzee. This is a very unique device (very few of us need 8 outputs) and this Geshelli does not seem suit my use case….no mater its value proposition may be. I’m a bit confused Larchan, why you were unable to swap a combination pair (L/R) of Op Amps with a DAC that has so many output but instead changing all 8 between for each comparison you made. That is too bad you no longer have a A26 to compare this DAC with directly with, after all the Gustard has discrete output circuitry too and a better linear power to that of the 12v Dayzee I hope that you will review the J3 sometime in the future since it seems to be designed to a larger consumer group. I’m hoping Geshelli will develop a J4 in the future however with similar feature to the current J3 but rather the extra toslink and coaxial in the front it would come with a I2S in the back. I need this output for a CD transport.
Read my lengthy post. The reason is because this is a different beast: the dual mono design does not exactly directly equate op-amps to channels... So this is their only DAC where you must swap out all eight channels at once.
Like many people I won’t spend much money on a Delta Sigma chip DAC…but I will on R2R or FPGA…and OP amp rolling doesn’t come off to me as a refined thing to do.
In was actually looking for the “ mystery DAC “ you mentioned 3-4 week backs, and I was very keen on it. So it is very nice to disclose it now. One of my DACs is the Gustard R25, and my speakers are rather precise and analytical, so I feel I am quite well with this system combo, synergising. About the US-only thing : I would advise to look for a friend / internet acquaintance one trust, and get the Dayzee via him / her. And yes, not mentioned yet: An excellent review, which I am going thought the 2nd time now, to catch all the details.
I wish Geshelli Labs would put up more "concrete" information concerning the Dayzee on their website. I'd have purchased one months ago. Every time I see one, it looks completely different than the last one I saw. They're just too "vague" about this particular product.
@@PassionforSound I've heard similar things concerning the family from many other ppl who have dealt with them...and I do keep looking at the product for a reason. It's just a difficult product to purchase if you aren't basically a "scientist" when it comes to this stuff. I'm less than 2 years into the hobby. I don't understand what 3/4 of this stuff is on a technical level. I don't know the difference between this opamp & that opamp. I'm not familiar with terminology for woodworking either. There HAS to be a better way to market this product than what they're doing currently. By all accounts it's amazing. I want one...but don't know what internal parts I need. They need to put up a "base model" of this product, with clear pricing....and then all the options can be add-ons. Also with clear pricing. The way they list their other customizable product. I don't know the difference between the opamps when it comes to those products either...but at least I can read the options that are available and what they cost. I ain't trying to be "anti-Geshelli Labs" here. Not at all. In fact, it's quite the opposite. I want to do business with them...and I'd like for them to make that an easier process for me. Without having to make phone calls or get into emails. How can I conversate about things that I don't know? Even talking with them, I'm basically just going to nod along & act like I know what they are talking about...or they are going to have to give me a 101 class concerning EVERYTHING. I don't want to do one of those options...and THEY don't want to do the other one. ...and I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to spend hours explaining every little detail about the internal workings of an intricate electronics component to some guy who may not even spend a dime...so I certainly don't expect them to do it. Their time is obviously more valuable than that. EDIT: Basically, I guess I'm asking for them to list a base model of the Dayzee at whatever price they want to list it....and show me the price for the different options for opamps, USB input & how many of each of those items that I would even need to pay for. ...and with the case options....just list it up like every other Geshelli product. Tell me which materials are available, what colors they come in, what they cost....and if you sell me a wooden one, tell me that I can also have it carved up super fancy for $X.XX.xx. Show/tell me what is available and what it costs. As I said. Every Dayzee I've seen looks totally different than the last Dayzee I saw. I wouldn't even know it's the same product if I hadn't been told. ...and I don't even know which options are possible when it comes to the looks of this item. It's an expensive unit. If the base model costs $1,200 and the fully loaded one is $1,500 I'd probably just buy the loaded out one. If the base model is $1,200 and the fully loaded one is $4,000...I'm obviously not buying the fully loaded one. At 2 years in, I don't have the gear to justify something like that. My gear is a LOT better than it probably should be, but I don't have any single component that cost over $2,250...and my speakers were $4,000 for the pair. My subwoofers were also about $4,000 for the pair. If this hypothetical base model Dayzee is $1,200...but I can deck it out with fancy carved woodwork while keeping the internals "base model" for $1,600...I would opt for that $1,600 option and I would upgrade the internals of my Dayzee as my other equipment gets better over time. If any of this even makes sense. Sorry for the novel, but this is the Dayzee we are talking about here. Infinitely customizable. ...and my whole problem is that with the way they are selling this product, the ppl of Geshelli Labs would have to spend 2 or 3 hours just telling me what all their options are & why I would even need them or care about them in the first place. I don't expect that from them. I'm not going to ask them to do it either. If they'd just sell me a based out Dayzee in a cool wooden box with metal front & rear panels and let me upgrade it as I go, that'd be awesome. NO CLUE what that would cost me, tho. ...and I also have no clue what "base model" internal parts I would even need. I'm only 2 years into the hobby, but I have a $30,000 system. Certainly not entry level...but certainly not top of the line either. That said, I don't want the cheapest stuff Geshelli is putting into the Dayzee...but I also do not need the most expensive stuff they're putting into the Dayzee. If an opamp is $90 and I need 16 of them, and it's only going to marginally improve things...I'd just NOT pay for all those opamps.
I'm sure the secondhand market will be a good source for these in the future. I don't think a lot will be sold, but people will always upgrade so some are sure to pop up...
For only US this DAC (+ 20:55 ) does not make any sense for me living in an € country. Unfortunately I watched the whole video to came to this point.. :(
J2 big siblings..gd1..Peace! Btw, the best Evo in iem systems for now is the outrageous M30 shanling..WOW they modular erythin'.. compared to this.. This will be a toys in the futures but not m30..mo modular to comes..ha4..Peace2!
They seem like a great family, but I would not buy one when you can get a DX9 or even a Cyan 2 for the price. They are just too cheap looking for the money.
Each op-amp is mono and the dual AK4499s each output stereo outputs, possibly with multiple channels or perhaps there are op-amps for handling the positive and negative side of the signal for the balanced outputs. Either way, it'll be four op-amps per side (left/right) and each op-amp will be processing one channel of the output signal from the chips.
Let’s talk about bias. I have to spend $3.5 to $4k to equal this Delta Sigma DAC as it is undervalued by 200% compared with the market ??? That is a crime to be sure. I just watched the three videos you did with the Geshelli family and I am glad you are so close to them. You have a financial interest in promoting Geshelli products and, it appears, the op-amps, but I may be wrong and hope this is clarified for the sake of understanding biased reviewing by other reviewers. So much bias out there.
Honestly, I was firmly aware of the potential of what you had alleged, but I didn't detect any bias here. Actually, it was quite the opposite. His review was very objective, and he was quick to point out deficits (perceived and subjective) in the Dayzee in comparison to the competing DACs he had on hand. I have watched other reviews of this DAC, and also read the comments from many viewers...everyone of those were truly glowing reviews. Lachlan's review was not that at all (honestly, I really wanted it to be because the Dayzee is on my upgrade list). The point is that this was not a biased review... but it was rather very much a Dragnetesque "just the facts..." review just like we would expect to receive from Lachlan.
@@Artemis_PrixI don’t disagree with you but this channel declares categorically that all reviews are biased. See last video. It is like ASR and its adherence to a rigid ideology. I do think it is possible that there might be a DAC at less than $4k that someone might prefer or even, I know crazy talk, less than $2k. Hope everyone finds what they are looking for.
@@middleearthltdone thing Lachlan does often touch on in his content, if not emphasize, is that when getting to these higher levels of performance the objective scrutiny becomes less a part of the observation and the subjective becomes more. Inherently, this means his impressions could differ significantly from that of others based on equipment pairing, perceived value, and preferred sound qualities. Reviewing gear at this level and above is often going to be biased beyond the reviewer’s control even if they are aware of that potential. Perhaps the timing of his previous video was intentional? Yes or no, it’s nice to see it addressed.
If you watch my various Geshelli Labs reviews (including this one), you'll find that I generally very much like their products and they're great people to deal with. However, you'll also find that I don't suggest these are the best products for everyone and I specifically said in the J2S review that I felt it had been overhyped in its AK4493 version by other reviewers. It just so happens that the Dayzee is significantly better than any other DAC in the same price range IF you upgrade the op-amps. Without upgraded op-amps, the Dayzee is just a decent $1300 dac. By the way, there's no benefit to me when people upgrade the op-amps. After all, you could buy direct from Geshelli or via Burson or Sparkos at the same time as buying the DAC or later. There's no way to track how someone is buying them for affiliate purposes and even if there were, neither Burson or Sparkos have any affiliate programs (in case you're assuming financial interests).
@@pumpkineater23 You can polish a turd if it's dried, mummified, or fossilized. Then, it's a shiny turd. Any of these options are still disgusting and repulsive. Ick!
@@HareDeLune I'm not sure a turd can be polished when it's dried. Perhaps, when it becomes white and furry, it could be fashioned into a handy purse though.
@truman4956 Yep, but that's part of the appeal. I had chosen just a black AL case with a smoked black cover (front and back) for my J2S. No need for it to bring attention to itself...all I care about is how it sounds. But, the other part is the full upgradability of the device (upgraded to the Sparkos 2590 op-amps and added a LPS) in conjunction with having the additional inputs on the front of the device... those have saved me numerous times ... especially when connecting my TV for ad hoc home theater use.
You have a point, BUT, how much are you willing to pay for aesthetics and what does that say about your view of the hobby? I’m hypocritical in pointing that out (I like good looking/feeling things too), and as such I would likewise feel irritated if someone asked me the exact same question. 😊 For me, do I want to show it off or listen to it? As someone with a wife who raises an eyebrow at my purchases now and then, a “more DIY” looking product might fly under the radar! 😂
@@Scott-DJ Chill,... those 300 million in the US like myself do not count according to @alstonmaccow9386... Anything outside your country doesn't exist clearly.
Adding high quality DC LPS to this DAC should upgrads sound quality as much as opamp switching. I have tried cheap LPS from AliExpress first on my cheap Wiim pro and I was not impressed at all. It made little better bass but sounds became little dull, not that upgraded sounds I expected. Later I got my own custom LPS made with audiophile quality capacitors and increased capacitance with custom made power cable and usb cable. And upgraded sounds I get was really unexpected. Extra bottom end, wider sound stage, more texture, bigger dynamic, and etc, just about every aspect of the sound quality was improved. It really made cheap Wiim pro to next level streamer.
According to another commenter, Geshelli *did* test that with a $40,000.00 piece of test equipment, and found the difference too small to be worth it. The question now becomes: Would a GAN LPS make a worthwhile difference?
@@HareDeLune Just adding anybody's LPS does not make better sound. Of course LPS usually makes the sound smoother and puncher. But it should match your gear and system. I had to tune my 2 LPS in a different way with different trans, capacitors, cables etc, because different parts make different sound characters. For example, I tuned one for more bass by increasing the trans size and capacitor value. And I tuned the other one for a more extended upper range by different bypass capacitors. I also use different power and USB cables too. Only this way it will make a true upgrade. With this LPS upgrade my Wiim pro is as good as CD even with mp3 file when I use it as pure streamers with my tube DAC. I could make this improvement with my limited knowledge and resources, I am sure somebody from a decent audio manufacturer can do way better than I can. In fact a lot of high end gears do come with dedicated outboard LPS and that LPS will work with only that specific gear because it was tuned for that specific gear from the developing stage.
I've got my Dayzee running on a locally made Gieseler Kraftwerk II LPS and I would say there might be a minor improvement, but not a large enough one that I would urge people to buy one for the Dayzee. Each device is different in terms of the impact of the power supply on the sound and the Dayzee does benefit slightly, but it's nowhere near the degree of improvement that op-amps deliver.
@@PassionforSound I have check it through company website. It didn't look anything special. I do not have experience on your DAC or system. And I don't know what improvement you are looking for, maybe you could add Duelund bypass capacitors on final filtering stage and this can usually clean up overall sound and brings little more details.

A: Yes, at this time, because it takes so long to meticulously manufacture (multiple hours) that we can't risk overloading our small team
Q6: How do I set the different filters on the AKM chipset with no screen or menu?
Excellent comment. Thank you.
Help write War and Peace? 😮
Thanks for adding your thoughts - concur wonderful genuine people - engenders a feeling of loyalty of wanting to support them!
Congratulations and happy listening!
Discrete class A output stages? 😮
Do you know if the XLR is 4v?
It might not be exactly 4V, but close to it. I find that other, comparable DACs tend to be a touch louder.
Does it have a remote or anyway to switch inputs via a third party remote? Thank.
I called Geshelli last week with a question and he asked if I liked my current dac (chifi) and I told he I loved it. He said I shouldn't worry about getting a different one. Very honorable.
Yes...I took a personal tour when I realized they were just a neighboring town from me...very nice people.
He told me to keep my j2s. It's not worth the upgrade.
How's UR source? 😮
DAC with Discrete class A
output stages sooo organic
I wish you could get an Aus power plug with Geshelli they only do US or Euro. Converting after market not for me.
What a great review!!! Your delivery, attention to detail, charisma and PASSION (pun intended :) ) kept me glued the whole time. Keep it up.
🙏♥️
it would be so interesting to hear you comparing it to the Holo Cyan 2
Me too
x8... buut the Dayzee not having i2s settles it for me compared to Cyan 2. Tho it would be interesting to know which one is more resolving considering the Dayzee is more resolving than the Laiv Harmony acc. to Lachlan.
Yes, I'd love to compare to the Holo DAC, but I can't get access to Holo Audio gear...
@@PassionforSound Oh no. I live in Germany so I cant get access to Geshelli... it truly is a crime
@-Ambos- yep. I feel your pain. I would have loved a wooden case for the Dayzee, but shipping costs... Not being able to get one at all is definitely worse.
The Yggy is a multibit DAC which puts it into the R2R "family" not to put too fine a point on it. Excellent video!
The AKM 4499/4191 chipset has some similar aspects - it is resistors doing the conversion to analog.
I don't believe I said it was any particular type of DAC...

Great review. I’ve had my Dayzee for 3 months. I’m running the stock T.I. Op Amps. I’m interested in upgrading but upgrading 8 at once is pricey!
So just buy two at a time until you have all eight. All it requires is patience and self control.
Besides, it's a fraction of the cost of the DAC itself.
@@HareDeLune You have to replace all 8 amps at the same time.
Yes, it's a big commitment and yes, you have to replace all 8 at once.
@@MrCambo5150
You "may" have skimmed over my comment without reading it carefully.
Rock on!
I'd love to, but I can't get access to Holo Audio gear. ☹️
It’s all about the flavor and how much the very minute presentation can be the deciding factor at these levels
at this level 1/2 the folks are replacing dacs for an existing speaker/amp combo where they perceive a flaw in the dac or speaker, sometimes amp. only about 20% build out a system from scratch. so while objectively there are clearly diminishing returns to buying dacs above $500, you're talking about audiophiles who want to get the best for their system in a budget.
and $1,300 - $1,800 ain't cheap, but it's actually a value against even more expensive units as the review said. and you're going to be keeping this for 10 years
Lachlan is the KING!

Lots of great options! I've got the J3 here for review soon and just posted some comparisons on Patreon for channel patrons. In short, the J3 IS excellent.
Lol. That hulk clip was brilliant.
Haha. I'm glad you liked it!
Any thoughts on single ended output vs balanced output on the dayzee?
Good point. I didn't mention that, but it's as good as identical based on my time with the DAC.
@@PassionforSound awesome thanks!
@@billparkins3064...and unlike some units, you can use every output simultaneously with no issue. By it's very comments in the instruction manual, that is not the case with the Harmony.
Both future proof your purchase seems to me.
Would love to see the Dayzee vs J3 both with sparkos 2590s. I wonder how much the dual AKM chips in the Dayzee helps or if it matters at all
THIS!!! As the potential future owner of a J3 I would love to know how much I am missing out on. I would also like to know if those differences are something I need an expensive set of headphones to pick up on, or whether a decent 2-channel speaker setup could justify it.

Take a look at their website. You can always call or email them and ask them directly. They're friendly.
I've got exactly that information coming soon...
@@PassionforSound I'm sure an upgraded J2S will be included too? 👀
Not exactly...
I have the j2 akm 4499 and sparkos 2590’s, I wonder how much of an upgrade the cyan is over it if any. Did you happen to review the Holo audio cyan yet?
Unfortunately no, and it's unlikely I will be able to because I can't get access to Holo Audio gear.
outstanding review. i appreciate the clear highlighting of the subjective vs objective aspects of this dac and in the excellent company you put this dac in.
this review can make me look at this despite the case not being to my taste. hell, i'd buy this just for the dual xlr outputs and the optical/coax daisychaining
If you seriously want one, then give them a call. They can build one custom made to order, so you get exactly what you want.
If you have any circuits removed that you don't need (Ex.: RCA connections that you'll never use), it lowers the cost.
I'm glad you liked the review and it's very cool that they are completely customisable as HareDeLune said.
Yeah extra outputs on my pre are great for sub as my amp has no sub out.
Great review ❤
I'm glad you liked it!
What power supply did you use with the dayzee. With an LPS is there room for further upgrade?
Yes, this could make a huge difference but push the price up another $300-500
My understanding is that you can easily add a LPS just like you can with other Geshelli DACs.
@@Artemis_Prixagreed - inquiring minds want to know!
I recently visited Geshelli Labs. During a demo of Dayzee, Geno mentioned that using a linear power supply, vs the included power supply, will not improve the sound quality at all.
Read my length posting for what I was told about that straight from G
Awesome review. We need to find a way to get an X30 in your hands to compare these two beasts!
That would be great!
Just a note about the lack of I2S on the Dayzee: The Harmony DAC does perform its best on the I2S input. I assume you were using the same style inputs on both DACs during your testing (which means that the Harmony was not at its best).
The Harmony DAC also tells you directly in its manual NOT to use XLR and RCA the same time due to possible "interference" . That's not good at all...
@@DigitalGrease
According to another commenter with a lot of information, Geshelli "worked hard to make the USB input sound as close to I2S as possible."
@@HareDeLune "as close to I2S as possible." Essentially what I said. Not equal.
. There's the 10gig Fiber Optic USB (not Toslink optical) connection available now. It's cheap & uses SFP modules on either end of an LC to LC cable. Say good-bye to copper connections.

so with shipping/warranty then the price should be similar to others?
The issue is the return costs for shipping back to base and then back to customer. That would easily add $1000 to the price, I suspect.
If it’s a crime for Geshelli not to ship the Dayzee outside North America, am I guilty by association for living in Canada? Either way, I’m not privileged enough to afford a USD$1,300 DAC… though I might be able to stretch for a J3 Pro. 😊
It's ok, you've done nothing wrong. 🙂
J3 Pro review is coming soon too...
@PassionforSound that's the plan. Thank you
My order has gone thru QA and will be shipped out this week..😁. Using the stock DAC and will be DAC swapping, Thank You Geshelli!!!!!

Thank you.
Unfortunately, I don't have a contact to get Gustard gear from so I can't promise anything at this stage...
Sounds like it's designed for active crossover in mind with many outputs / enough for one for each tweeter mid woofer subwoofer.
That's an interesting thought...
active systems are awesome
Are you sure you didn't mean Sparkos 3602?...when you said 3601?
Just wondering.
I'm ordering the Burson V2 for the XLR on my geshelli V2 on Wednesday.
Thanks for the insight.
No, the 3601 is the single (mono) version that's needed in the Dayzee. The 3602 is the dual version used for the J2S/J3, etc.
@@PassionforSound Thanks for reaching out. Much appreciated
My streamer dac is HiFi Rose 250a,
The dac in this I can hear the weight applied to piano keys in songs like High Healed Boys.
Really do like your "new" review style. 👍
I'm so glad you're enjoying it
Very nicely done

You’ve mentioned something very interesting at 14:00 that brain timing things. I want to know further about that. Have you explained this in another video or is there any place that I can look for more information?
Anyway, as always, great review. It’s a bummer that I have no chance to try Dayzee since I live outside of US.😢

Great review! Any chance of seeing a review of Auddio Note Dac? Really interesting to see if their cult following is based in reality 😁
I don't currently have a contact to access those, but if I ever get the chance, I'll definitely try one.
I'm loving my Gustard A26. I wonder if it has any opamps in it. Time to pull it apart and see I guess 🙂
I think they use a discrete design with individual components, but I'm not sure.
Please review the audeze Maxwell! You will be perfect for the review!
I'd love to, but I can't get loaner units due to the local supplier.
Wonder how is this compared to gustard x30.
I'd love to find out, but I don't currently have a Gustard contact.
Why don't you become a dealer for Geshelli?
I'd love to, but I couldn't provide transparent reviews of equipment if I had a direct interest in a brand that sells amps and DACs. I sell tubes and cables because they're just accessories, but getting into components gets tricky.
Yet another DAC to confuse me. If I decide to try a seperate DAC it might likely be the Cyan 2. At this stage the Eversolo 8 DAC seems good and I have the DAC module in my Accuphase amp.
Which is better, the Eversolo z8 or the DAC50 in the Accuphase?
@@patrickmeylemans9627I have the DAC 60 module. The Eversolo 8 DAC is the better.
That is too bad you no longer have a A26 to compare this DAC with directly with, after all the Gustard has discrete output circuitry too and a better linear power to that of the 12v Dayzee
I hope that you will review the J3 sometime in the future since it seems to be designed to a larger consumer group.
Exactly. All 8 op-amps need to be swapped when changing them.
I've got the J3 here now and will be comparing it with the Dayzee when I do the review.
Hmmm i do not know if i still need dac anymore… i hsve chord hugo tt2, i still fell that analog is way better in sound.. i skip this
I wish Geshelli Labs would put up more "concrete" information concerning the Dayzee on their website. I'd have purchased one months ago.
Every time I see one, it looks completely different than the last one I saw. They're just too "vague" about this particular product.
That's probably because it's so customisable. If you email them, Sherri will talk you through any questions you have. Their service is outstanding.
It's a shame you can't get these in Belgium, I'd like one with upamps, and who knows maybe later....lol;l
I'm sure the secondhand market will be a good source for these in the future. I don't think a lot will be sold, but people will always upgrade so some are sure to pop up...
@@PassionforSound no thanks no secondhand market dudes
How about a blind test comparing it with cheaper and more expensive DACs.
There's no need
why dont manufacturers just use sparkos or muse and be done with it...
Cost. Many people don't believe op-amps make a difference and would scoff at the higher price tag required to supply with those included.
Dayzee vs Pontius 2?
They're very different, but I prefer the Dayzee, I think. I've not directly compared them though.
"L.A.i.V"... I think it's "Life" 😇
I've heard people say it that way, but wasn't sure...
For only US this DAC (+ 20:55 ) does not make any sense for me living in an € country. Unfortunately I watched the whole video to came to this point.. :(
As I said at the end, there may be distribution in the future and there will also be plenty of secondhand options because that's the way of our hobby.
J2 big siblings..gd1..Peace!
Btw, the best Evo in iem systems for now is the outrageous M30 shanling..WOW they modular erythin'.. compared to this.. This will be a toys in the futures but not m30..mo modular to comes..ha4..Peace2!
Is that a Firewatch t-shirt?
No, it's one of my own merchandise t-shirts. 🙂
Unfortunately, no. It's a T-shirt from his merch selection. Which, by the way, is worth checking out. 😉
They seem like a great family, but I would not buy one when you can get a DX9 or even a Cyan 2 for the price. They are just too cheap looking for the money.
Fair enough. Everyone's tastes are different

Speaking of you can't shine the turd that's what I feel about German cars and so piece of craps you pay a lot you lose a lot😢
Why would a DAC need sooo many Op- Amps? 🤷♂

My Yggy+ MIB version is very quiet
Yep, no noises from the two Yggys I've got here or the Bifrost 2. I do get a very slight hum with the Folkvangr though...

You can polish a turd, but it's still just a turd.
No you can't polish a turd. But you can roll it in glitter.
@@pumpkineater23
You can polish a turd if it's dried, mummified, or fossilized. Then, it's a shiny turd.
Any of these options are still disgusting and repulsive. Ick!
@@HareDeLune I'm not sure a turd can be polished when it's dried. Perhaps, when it becomes white and furry, it could be fashioned into a handy purse though.

Geshelli product just look old even when new. I dont think i will ever buy their products
Definitely more of a DIY looking product
For me, do I want to show it off or listen to it? As someone with a wife who raises an eyebrow at my purchases now and then, a “more DIY” looking product might fly under the radar! 😂
Yep. The Geshelli design isn't going to be to everyone's liking. The wooden version looks great though (IMO).

@@jkim4712
While I do know that every part makes a difference, tuning a power supply is definitely beyond my current skillset.
Thank you for the info.
