When I moved to the Philippines I had no idea of where I would live, my main reason for coming was to find a wife. Now 9 years later I have a good understanding of what would be the ideal place for someone like me to live. I traveled extensively for the first 3 years all over the Philippines, I look back now, and what a great time it was, I recommend for anyone who comes here to do that. I am now married 5 years, I live in Angeles my wife is a Kapampangan. Angeles City and Clark are ideal towns for expats to live in, it has all the food from back home, there is an international airport, the infrastructure here is good and depending on what Barangay you live in, the traffic is good , no brown outs, the hospitals are excellent . I could go on the benefits of living here over other places in the Philippines, the only thing Angeles doesn't have is beaches , its an inland city, but having the airport gives you access to all the main islands and I have a car and there are some incredibly beautiful places I can drive to on Luzon.

I have to laugh, you guys talk about being “minimalistic” then talk about Starbucks, cars etc.😂😂😂 On my travels to the Philippines, I’m constantly amazed at westerners, especially Americans, comparing their native country to the Philippines, then complaining. I travel there to enjoy the food, the people, the culture, not to go and eat at Maccas (McDonalds to you Americans) or stay in a five star motel. When I relocate to the Philippines, I plan to not live like a westerner but to embrace the Philippine lifestyle. I look at Calvin from Sunshine Shoulders and think that is more my style, living simply and in a small town, like San Carlos. Each to their own. 🇦🇺😎

Because there are expats (not all) thinks that they could live here like a king. There are old men foreigners who would love to flaunt their money so they could flirt with the local women younger than them, just to lose everything and ending up being beggars. Be careful with your money for there are gold diggers also here in PH.

I completely agree with you guys, minimalism is the way to go. When I put my house on sale in Toronto 5 years ago, and did the clean up, that's when I realized how much stuff I acquired over the years that I didn't need, more so, even unpacked. I feel much better now living only with the basic & uncluttered life, and with a healthier bank account to boot.

    Hello Gio!
I am a new subscriber to both you and Paul & Paul2 both their women Mia & Mae, Sunshine, Pea, BlackPhilipino, and few others there in the Philippines. We currently have lived at BGC since 2018 although I have been locked out of the country since March 2020. Although Fort Bonifacio Global City BGC is a very nice city unfortunately it's missing the most important component the beach. I was born in Tampa Florida and spent most of my life on a lovely tropical island Okinawa Japan retired military (51 Young ).
Please remember our names "Maylene & Michael Arnold" Because as soon as the country opens up we are relocating to Mactan New Town as well! We will all be neighbors, we are very peaceful and like to keep a low profile mostly just living a healthy life. We choose to retire there in the Philippines for the fact living in a fancy house driving a fancy car has no meaning in our lives. It would be more meaning full to be living in an area where you can lift and help others out of poverty. An act of kindness goes a long way brother.
Thanks to all you bloggers for sharing all the intel and you all keep up these good videos!
Stay safe always Kuya, keep spreading the kindness, and God Bless you all
    Mabuhay!

I love expat chat. I am retired in Thailand and many of the issues are the same.
I made three 1 month trips here before realizing that this is where I wanted to be AND I had a friend who had come here before me. Arriving and taking short term accommodations and planning to spend months or a year travailing around is a great plan. Also, many Americans go through life thinking that owning a home is the ultimate life goal. You definitely should stay away buying anything or using that as a criteria for where you want to be. They economics of living in a developing country is very different. Don’t tie yourself down for a while.
I also sold everything I owned and arrived with two suitcases. I can’t tell you how liberating that is. I love not owning a house or a car. In my case, I am loving the experience of living in a city, Bangkok, for the first time. I don’t regret my materialist past life in America but I’ve done that and it is time to move on and live life from a different perspective.
In short: Southeast Asian women are just more feminine. For us older guys is also a blast from the past. It helps make life here somewhat familiar.
The cost of living is overall less expensive. This is especially true for housing which is most people’s biggest expense. How cheap will depend on where you are coming from as much as where you go. It is probably going to be more expensive than you think if your only research is internet research. It will be more expensive if you also don’t compromise your current lifestyle and take advantage of some of the lifestyle of your adopted country. It is not so much about better or worse but about something different. You can’t go to a foreign country and expect to transplant every aspect of your home country.
Retirement is not like vacation. Think about who you are before deciding anything. I retired 5 years before moving abroad. My advice is to adjust to retirement before other dramatic life changes but everyone needs to do what they need to do.

You are so right about minimalism. The first time I went overseas was to the Philippines, a little dive resort near Dumaguete, Monarch Sands, then run by an expat American Ron and his asawa. I was struck by the simplicity of the people, the very little they had but it seemed family and community was of great importance. When I got back home to Canberra, Australia, I was overwhelmed by the commercialism, especially in the malls. From that first visit, I have planned to one day relocate to the Philippines. I have since been to the Philippines 5 or 6 times now, from Puerto Princesa, El Nido, Port Barton, San Vicente, Dumaguete, Sipalay, Dauin, Bacolod, Quezon City, Quezon in Palawan and of course Boracay.

Retiring in the Philippines is great but doing your homework is always a key to be able to understand how things work in Philippines. Learn the cultures. How and why is always the key questions. I’ll probably base my self somewhere around Cebu City, as it’s the place I know best, and it’s easy to travel around from there, with the airport, and sea ports. Just watched this vlog and subscribed. I wanted to share my thoughts in retiring in Philippines with my caucasian husband.
Born and raised in the island (Batangas) lived and worked in California for 30 years. My husband is ecstatic in retiring in the Philippines a few years from now (3-5 years max) sell house in CA and buy a condo in BGC (currently in process) we decided and chose to live in the city because of the healthcare convenience, we can catch a flight to any nearby islands whenever we want to, also the night life and all the convenience you would want and need readily in a heart beat right outside our doorstep, malls downstairs and a 2 hour drive to my province if we want a feel of the island life.
I also wanted to add, to those who wanted to retire in the Philippines, they can also check out condos in Manila, Makati, BGC and get all the convenience and still have access to go to the islands of their choice at anytime.
Thank you for the nice enlightening retirement discussion, am sure it sort of helped some of those looking for answers.

The best place to retire is close to everything especially if you have health issue . Angeles city and Olongapo for me is convenient place close to the beach, hospitals ,International airport and only 2 t0 3 hour drive to Manila.

I can relate to really enjoying the minimalist lifestyle. I don't want stuff, just memories and a fun life. You guys are on point on everything you talked about. My monthly budget there was $2000 USD but I lived a good life there.

Marvelous job on the topic of which cities to see, be a minimalist and do the domestic travel and find the city that fits you the best
Caygan de oro, Davao, etc etc etc if you can list the 10 smaller cities to consider which has been overlooked.
I've been to the island of Marinduque and it's very modest, quiet but a little to quiet for me but beach resorts like Santa Cruz resort , and White Sands is super modern

Great little round table discussion 🙂 I pretty much agree with everything that's said. I probably spend about $1,500 per month between me and my wife in the U.S.
I do try really hard to live a minimalist lifestyle here.

Interesting dicusssion guys. I hope you continue to enjoy your stay in the Philippines, and hopefully more Foreigners are encouraged to retire in the Philippines. Your stay in the Philippines is contributing to the livelihood of Filipinos out there. I've travelled to so many provinces and cities in the Philippines. For retirement, i pick Duma, Cebu and Clark. Once the pandemic is over, I'll be travelling to IloIlo City because I haven't visited the province yet. According to my research, it could be even better than Dumaguete. :)

But, things happen , especially w/ the lack of sugar free food in the Philippines ,& readily available modern tools to manage the diabetes .There are U S trained doctors most everywhere, but the available hospitals there dont seem to measure up ,compared to St Louis , which has a major ,& famous hospital about every 10 miles .

U should live in Alabang area or the suburbs if the health is ur issue or healthcare. Asian Hospital is top notch as well as St. Luke’s BGC, Makati Medical Center, St. Luke’s Quezon City, Medical City in Pasig (Ortigas). These are the best ist class hospitals in the Philippines. They can operate u even in the emergency room since they have the best tools and the best doctors in the Philippines. They are the elites of all the hospitals in the whole Philippines. My Sister, brother in law and my Father all had sugeries at Asian Hospital (Removal of thyroid gland, Aortic Aneurysm, and Heart Operation). I recomment Daang Hari in Alabang (the villages there or Southwoods in San Pedro laguna or even Nuvali/Paseo Sta Rosa Laguna and u can go to Tagaytay or Beaches in Batangas during weekends for fresh air and farm life, u could also build a business somewhere in Tagaytay City (tourist destination in Luzon) one of the most popular in the Philippines which is near Nasugbu Batangas, Calatagan, Lemery but preferrably choose the white beaches to go to for some fresh air and the freshest seafood from their local market near the beaches or even in the beach itself where local fishermen sell u a fresh newly caught big fishes to grill beside the beach.

Paul being young. The times in your life is still really healthy and primetime. So both of you basically living anywhere in the Philippines is great for you. I know Sean, having a age similar to me, most likely feel very comfortable living in Cebu now. Finally, Paul mention international Airports at of course Manila and Cebu, is a game fixer for me to retire in one of those two (2) great cities in the Philippines. Gio, you are on point with Guam being close ass our American Territory. Thanks for this great discussion with all three (3) gentlemen. This really helps us future retirees too.

Paul is right on the money with Filipina women. If you're a foreigner, there is no interview...the Filipina women see you as a jackpot financially and genetically. When it comes to cost of living, one thing you guys have going against you is when the locals see you, and they think money right away. I get a local to get stuff done for me at local prices. Make friends with a local that you can trust and pay them to do stuff for you like run errands or other stuff. Put them on a $50 a month retainer if you have to and they will run whatever errands you want or handle whatever business for you. If your wife is Filipina, have her negotiate stuff for you while you remain out of sight. If they see white dude, they're like, this guy's got money. My folks pay a local to do all sorts of stuff for them, even fix stuff around their condo and house sit their condo or run errands or do paperwork for them. A maid is like $100 - $150 a month and they will do everything for you around the house and even run errands, buy groceries, etc. If you find one that you can trust, then they are worth their weight in gold. The other thing is that most Filipinos tend to be loyal employees. If you do things like bring them some gifts or "pasalubong" during birthdays, holidays, or when you get back from traveling overseas, they value that. It's like relationship brownie points towards loyalty. Bottomline, is if they see that you take care of them, they will take really good care of you. You have to understand the culture and learn how to navigate it with the locals.

From the sound of things, it seems that the wife and I can do well in the right place in the Philippines. We have steady retirement pensions coupled with a decent bank account. Right now I am guilty of just listening to vloggers. We decided to take a vacation to Davao City for a month, mainly to experience the area and compare it with that of the videos viewed, with the idea of becoming an ex-pat. At our ages now, hospitals and quality of medicine plays a factor. Beaches, shopping and restaurants are points of interest. Might hop on a plane and take the 'little over an hour' flight to Valencia. And this might not be our only visit before making that big decision to move. For now, I'm trying to absorb everything I can. Great video guys, I'll be viewing the others.
