For 4,5 years people got executed, hungered, send too camps. Except the women whom hanged with the Germans. They had food, wine, safety. Even if they were just trying to survive, it was seen as betrayal. They got shaved, the collaborating men got hanged.
Everyone got it, during the occupation. My grandmother's niece wanted to bring drinking water to family, working in the fields.
She got shot of her bike by a German plain flying by. 14yrs old. So forgive them for taking some revenge.

So when Sobel comes back, thats because he ACTUALLY did....not because they wanted to give the actor more scene time.

The Lieutenant that was shot when looking through the binoculars lived (like it said in the episode) he went on to work for the CIA later on his life after the war. One of the easy company guys who didn’t know he survived the gunshot wound later saw the lieutenant in the pentagon (or some other government building in Washington D.C.) and it really freaked him out. He thought he “saw a ghost” when he saw the guy working for the CIA.
My grandfather was a replacement in the Korean War but as a Marine for the 1st Marine division. He was a replacement for the men who fought in the Chosin reservoir (if you don’t know what that is, it’s a big battle famous in the Marine Corps.)
Holland (and other nations as well) does this really awesome “adopt a grave” program where citizens where the American cemeteries are located all take care of a fallen soldiers grave. They bring flowers to them, learn about them, and even connect with family members who still remain around like nieces, sisters, and other family members of the fallen. They really take care of our fallen boys there, they know that those men are resting in their new homeland, and those people take care of our men. It’s such a beautiful thing they do, and they take it VERY seriously.

These weren't Germans, they were Dutch citizens liberated from the Nazis. These people were tormented, tortured, their Jewish citizenry were taken and transported to concentration camps,. The women and men who collaborated with the Nazis were considered no better than the Nazis as they didn't care less about their own people but took advantage of the Germans torturing their neighbors. I have to tell you I do enjoy watching you guys learn. Not many in this recent generation are very deep in history. I mean this was 80 years ago too but these are the kinds of things that people should never forget because when we do, we will repeat this disaster again..

No spoilers. Just a couple of comments about this chapter:
    - Sobel did not want to make E. Company the roughest one, he wanted to be feared by the whole E. Company, officers included. By that time, the E. Company were through the D Day and 90 days of combat. They don't fear Sobel anymore, and Sobet is scared of that, by his facial expression.
    - The series is named Band of Brothers for a reason: no man behind, go for your mates missing in action, caring for each other. Real values on combat and outside battlefield. I miss those values, I hope we can have them back.

This episode starts when the men were back in England after D-Day and the weeks of battle following it. They spent something like three months in England resting, recuperating and training the replacements. Those three months were essentially the last time Easy and the other companies of the 101st with them would be off the frontlines and away from battle for more than a handful of days till the end of the war in Europe.

I can relate to Popeye not wanting to miss the jump. when I joined the national guard at 18 (2007) I had what was called "college first" in my contract. Basically, I would be in the guard undepoyable until the end of college, then I'd be deployable. I graduated basic in the last class of 07. When I got to my unit, they said we'd be leaving in September for a deployment. I bonded really well with the guys and kept thinking to myself, "what if something happens to my friends and I could have made a difference?" So I decided to sign away my college first and go with the boys. I don't know that me going made any difference, but then again do we ever truly know what difference our choices make?

Operation Market Garden was a planned hatched by the British General Montgomery to enter northern Europe in Holland who had been taken over by the Germans in 1940, so they were an occupied country. The reason the Kid had never tasted Chocolate is because he was born right before the occupation and the germans basically starved the country.
The women who slept with the germans, the resistance krpt tabs on who was on what side. Its a simplification obviously, im sure many if the women didnt have a choice, but anyone who cooperated or gave comfort to the germans were rooted out after the Americans took over. The orange armbands identified the Resistance to the Germans, orange being the national color.
Its tough to really comprehend what's happening sometimes, especially if you dont know the ranks, and a loose understanding of what took place when in the war, youll get a lot out of it if you watch it again, put the subtitles on, and really watch and pay attention. They give you most of the answers to a lot of the questions and dont be afraid to pause and go back if you think youve missed something.😊

10:33 people are complex and have their own reasons for collaborating with the Germans. Many women that slept with the Nazis did so at their own will, to improve their own living situation. There were some rapes and sexual assaults, but many women who collaborated with the Nazis did so as their own choice. To collaborate with the Nazis would actually mean ratting out your neighbors and loved ones if you expect them to be part of the resistance, which is basically handing them a death sentence. This is why the women’s heads are being shaved and the men were being executed.

Good reaction. Brit + we know a lot of the history, every one of those men that didn't live had a story, a personality, goofed off with their friends and wanted to make it home. The series does a great job of an overview and some of those personal stories.
Obviously, it's a tv show and real history, so you know who made it through, who wrote the book(s) and went on into the world. It's really, really worth watching the documentary We Stand Alone Together - the story of Easy Company - made by the same crew, but more or the men that were actually there talking about their experiences.
Super important lesson of history, what good can be achieve when we put our minds to it. The UK will always be greatful to our Allies, Americans and peoples of the Commonwealth that came to fight with us. Some fascinating stories of troops from Australia, Africa, India, Nepal and all over - the world would be a very different place without their sacrifices.

This isn't "based" on a true story. It is a true story. Like 99.9% taken directly from the interviews that are sampled at the beginning of each episode, as well as books written by or about the men. Differences in the show are either very small or are simple errors by the historian.
Also, you're not alone: Most men can't go to war either. Even most soldiers can't. Combat troops are always a minority of the military, and the guys in this group were top-shelf among front-line fighters. Normal people can't function at all in that kind of nightmare. That's one of the big reasons not to have a draft, and if you do, you mostly put draftees in support positions rather than combat.

8:56 this happened in almost all the towns that were under Nazi occupation. 3:48 contrary to what you’re saying, at this point in time, Easy Company hadn’t made any combat jumps since Normandy on June 6th. That wasn’t what was supposed to happen, but General Patton and the US Third Army kept overrunning their drop-zones due to the amount of ground they ended up covering and the Airborne operations ended up getting scrapped (no need to parachute drop behind friendly lines). So Easy Company has been preparing for operations and then having them cancelled, so they have been chilling in England for about two months waiting for the next jump into Europe, and it would come in the form of Market Garden.

Wars come and go. But remember this was the second WORLD war, meaning almost every country int he world was either in direct conflict or under occupation. No war, before or since, had such extreme consequences. The populations of occupied countries (Netherlands in this case) often provided intelligence to their occupiers in exchange for safety, or they would join resistance movements against the occupation. Either way, people had difficult decisions to make and nobody was truly safe until the war was over. It's not fair to judge what people did but imagine how Americans would react to our own people collaborating with an enemy...

Operation Market-Garden was a flawed plan to begin with whose failure really had nothing to do with the men on the ground. The 101st and 82nd were all landed within 2-3 miles of the bridges they were supposed to take. Some of the British drop zones were 10 miles from the objectives they were supposed to take. Let me see if I can help you guys out a little bit!! First of all yes don't try to overthink too much just watch and soak it in because yes it is definitely history that you are watching!! Not everyone that you saw in this episode was a replacement!! I think by now you should recognize at least four or five of the regular characters that you've been seeing in the past few episodes!! Not sure how far you guys are on patreon but just to explain this episode if no one has already done that let me say this!
This was the country of Holland, the 101st parachuted into Holland which was occupied by Germany at the time!! The intention was to liberate Holland from the Germans and push them back into Germany!! It was thought that if we could accomplish this we would be able to attack on German soil and have the war over by Christmas of 44!! The women were thought of as collaborators!! I personally don't agree with the way they were treated because you don't know the circumstance by which they may have been forced to sleep with German soldiers!! Show all the civilians that you saw waving orange and the man with his little boy were all Dutch civilians, not Germans!! The mission as you saw was a failure!!
There is a 1977 movie called "A Bridge Too Far" which is a more detailed look at this operation from the British point of view, Brits took the most losses in this failed operation!!!
Even though we thought it was only old men and boys that were defending what we didn't know was that an elite division of German soldiers were brought in there for some r&r (rest and relaxation)!
It's difficult as it is to understand that we had to go into the cities which are occupied by civilians and German soldiers in order to clear them out there was no choice!!! It wasn't like we could send out a message telling the civilians to get out of town because we're coming to kill Germans!!😮

I find that you both are "missing" alot. It seems you are both not "into" the show yet. Your reactions are very shallow now. Take some time to digest what you are seeing in the lives of these men. Your reactions will be even better. I think it may help to pause when you talk and then get back into it. Just a suggestion. Looking forward to Crossroads and beyond.

Why do you keep saying “I’m not going to lie”??
    Do you normally lie?

It’s worth mentioning that it’s likely the Dutch women “collaborators” had no choice under German occupation. What was done to them was tragic.

Awesome observation about covid as a trauma experience. It's certainly a story to tell younger people who won't have experienced it. My family flourished at home, but many people did not.
The senior officer who ordered another soldier to tell him when the jump light turns green wasn't shown to depict replacements as incompetent. He is one of many soldiers who lied about being color blind. The TV show inserts a lot of references to things without explaining them, implying without directly stating.
Good observation later when the same lieutenant is asked what to do in the middle of combat and he isn't sure. I've seen the whole series many times and never picked up on that he was a replacement, rather than someone that the show didn't focus on before.
The father who offered the soldiers pickled eggs was Belgian. German is an official or co-official language in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Belgium. The Dutch language is similar to German, their both being West Germanic languages. If, as other commenters have noted, the father was speaking Dutch, then the person who transcribed the subtitles could have made a mistake. On paper, the two languages share many words... the chief differences being pronunciation and sentence structure. The languages are far enough apart that if you speak one and not the other, it would be hard for you to understand someone speaking the other language. But to a transcriber using Google Translate, they could misidentify the language being spoken.

The father and daughter were there because THEY LIVE THERE! I mean, it's in the 1940s. Do you think all civilians across Europe and the world just have some spare place to go to?
And you are shocked that a combat soldier used combat?! After my fifth or sixth comment in a few minutes. I guess I just have to realize certain people. Just know absolutely nothing About history or anything important. All of this stuff is exciting to learn about. I remember I was. I just don't get how other people don't see it like that. Instead they are focused on stupid crap.

You guys should have watched a few world war 2 documentaries before watching this.. Because some of the things being said.. blows my mind. I knew about all of this in pretty good detail when I was like 10 years old. I'm only 34, so you can't come. Call me some old dude like you're probably thinking.. I just think it's insane how people under 30 pretty much know nothing about any of these wars or really Anything important anymore. I mean, these 2 don't even understand how a war is fought or what happens, it seems. Of course, they are thought in cities and towns. You can't avoid it. It is too big. That's another thing. THEY CANT SEEM TO UNDERSTAND HOW BIG THE WAR IS and How it's Fought across the European continents and many any other places in the world. ALL AT THE SAME TIME... MILLIONS of people. I can't even imagine these 2 finding out about concentration camps.. Even if they've heard of them before, i'm sure they don't know the complete details. Yeah i'm sure they've never seen pictures.
And this dude saying that they are doing a bad job at the moment.. So cringe. He doesn't understand this happen in real life. No matter how many times he hears it in the beginning. It's so hard not to keep coming back to comment on this page because it's annoying hearing some of the things I hear. And I'm sure people will come in to stick up for them saying that they don't know about war. Or never been in the military. But I'm talking about things that are common. Sense that they just don't understand or catch on to.

What gets lost to history is how much the Dutch suffered under German occupation. The scene with the little boy and 'he never tasted chocolate' was too soft a reminder. The Germans stripped food, fuel and other resources. By 1944 they took so much that thousands of Dutch died from the elements and starvation. This is the reason for the Dutch resistance getting revenge on anyone who helped the Germans for the 4+ years of occupation.
