Nah, you really can't take great pics with any cam. Any decently working non-specialized camera combo yes, perhaps, but not _any_. I have a almost brand new camera that not only can you not take great pictures with, you cannot take ANY pictures with it, unless you fugg around in a darkroom with it and fiddle a 35mm piece of film in the right place by hand, the transport on it doesn't work - never has. That said I don't give two poops about what Canon does per se, but I hope the EF-M lenses get cheaper for a while, before going stratospherically expensive, so I can complete my collection without needing to rob a bank.

You’re quite right Mark. There’s nothing wrong with these cameras. I’m using m50, M6 and M200. They all share my arsenal of lenses and I’m very happy with the video quality that I get from them all.
It is curious that Canon are finishing the m series though. The M50 must have been an entry into mirrorless for so many people and Canon even put out a mk2 of that and the M6. They were all at a nice price level for beginners.

I agree 100% Ian. I will be keeping my M50s & M200 for many years to come having spent thousands on gear. It is very odd that Canon should ditch one of their best selling cameras (of all time?) and fail to support the lens range for it, then replace it with a lens range where there are no 3rd party manufacturers with more affordable lenses for beginners. I subscribe to both your and Mark's channel as the pair of you make perfect sense to me. Thumbs up to Mark for his comments. Neither of you are shills like many of the channels who talked rubbish about the exclusive leaks they had about the new M50 II, none of which proved to be true and who ditched the M50 quickly some time ago. Mark has tried to find lenses that have extended the life of the EF-M range while Canon did rather little for M owners. Keep up the great work Mark & Ian.

The Canon M50 is the only camera that I have been unable to walk away from since I got it in 2018. It is the only camera that calls me back whenever I say I'm done with it. It's small, light, and takes fantastic pictures, and once you get used to it, you can even make the battery last longer by switching it off in between shots. I bought it for street photography, but have ended up using it for events, and protests, even vlogs. I've ended up buying adapters for it, and shooting it with vintage m42 lenses… and when I pop a UFO lens on it, it is even pocketable. I've used it so much, all the rubbers are falling off at the back. I've used it in the rain, where it has got soaked and started to spaz out, but after blowing it out, and leaving it in rice, it has sorted itself out on more than one occasion. Because of my back problem, I have considered going full in on the M-system, even buying a second body for more serious work for when I can't lift my DSLRs anymore. I'm still going to do that irrespective of Canon's decision to discontinue this little wonder machine… more fool them.

The 22mm is something I personally think that everyone should play with at least once. It's not really useful to describe how balanced the lens is without being able to see what it does yourself, it hits a sort of "magical" equilibrium between a sort of fisheye and something like a fullframe 50mm fixed that I at least think is good enough to make it a "must have" on EF-M cameras, if not on the camera it should be in the bag with it. Mine doesn't sit on my EOS-M that often because I have a Viltrox adapter and some other lens on it to get some specific more tele look, but the 22mm is never far.

    • @noth606
      @noth606 11 місяців тому +1

@@fingereze7202 To me the best thing it does is that pictures with it don't have that "too wide" look if you get what I mean, it takes pictures that look normal unless you go out of your way to push it, like a full picture height vertical object at the edge of frame. It has the look of a 35mm on FF almost exactly. The only real downside is that it doesn't play well with low light, but that's logical. Another big advantage is that it makes the camera look like a plain compact camera, not at all 'intimidating' like a big DSLR tends to be, so people tend to be more willing to be photographed with it - at least in my experience. I often take pictures of things that spontaneously happen, and when I ask if I may take pictures, people always look at my camera. The EOS-M+22mm gets the same reaction that my compact Lumix'es do which is always "Sure" with a smile. If I'm carrying my Nikon with batterygrip etc very often it's a "Nooo..." or I have to explain what I want to do with the pictures first.

All good points. I think what most ( or all ) manufacturers are trying to do is force buyers into higher-priced items with fewer features. As much as I like the M6 II, it has no EVF unless purchased separately. Somewhat related, you now see new higher-priced phones with no micro SD slot. For me, it is a signal to start developing my photography skills using budget and vintage gear.

Canon M wasn't a bad idea, but because they went for "smaller, lighter" etc from the start, they had a fight on their hands with every other new release.
Working professionals are not the audience for the modern releases. As you say, people that earn money don't care for 8k video when their clients have never shown any interest in it.

I mean, there are a couple of problems with the computer analogy. Have you tried to access the internet with any computer from the 00s or earlier? Lack of security updates, increase RAM requirements, not to mention incompatibility of software with modern standards means using old computers is difficult.
The analogy with -digital- cameras is also problematic because of how much digital camera tech changed in the 00s and earlier.
I think this is much less true today, and cameras from the late 2010s are much more long lasting. So your point is still largely true.

There are several key differences between cameras and computers though:
    1) Cameras have more moving parts that wear out and will be harder to replace.
    2) Camera batteries degrade over time, and the use of proprietary designs (i.e. not the standard AA) will also make them harder to replace.
It is precisely because of these reasons that I am considering grabbing a second M50 so that I can continue using my underwater casing for this particular camera model.

My problem: the M6II isn´t so reliable. The body makes squeezing noises, the down button und the dial isnt´t working and the timekeeper battey died. This happen after only 4 years and about 80.000 shots. Now I´m using only my RP, as fullframe or crop mode.
So on the long term the M6II isn´t as goog as other bodies, the ergonomics are far behind my RP.

I agree with much of what you said here. I still use the original Canon EOS M for video with MagicLantern. More than 10 years old and the image quality is stunning, it even produces raw video. Perfect! I actually don't use it with EOS-M lenses but lenses from other mounts adapted to it. I have so many lenses for other systems that buying native lenses didn't make any sense at all. I've actually been waiting for full frame mirrorless cameras to get out of their constant upgrade cycle for video because I like to keep my gear for a long time. I think we're getting there finally. My main camera for photos is a Leica M6 from 1990 by the way. That's when photography on film reached the peak of that technology. I'm waiting for the equivalent of that for video before I invest in a full frame mirrorless. I'm thinking R8 might already be the ticket if I don't need IBIS.

Thanks for the video! I don't really follow camera news so I wouldn't have known otherwise. It's sad to see this mount go, but in a lot of ways it may be a blessing for M50 users who want to expand their lens arsenal at a discount in the future. I bought my M50 brand new in 2020 at the start of the pandemic and I don't plan on selling it or letting it go until the thing just does not switch on anymore 😂 Like you said with the computer analogy, you can keep using cameras until they quit on you essentially. If you look at the digicam craze, those cameras are well over 20 years old and people are picking them back up to shoot nostalgic photos. Perspective is important! As for video, it's still pretty great for family videos or youtube since most ppl still do not shoot in 4k. Again thanks for the info!

Shooting with a pair of 5DM3s for years. Bought a M50 a few years ago and never really used it. My research into mirrorless had me dust the M50 off and try again. I picked up the Sigma 16mm and a 7Artisans 35mm and have an adapter for my EF lenses. Loved using it on a trip except the controls are lacking for moving focus and adjusting other settings. I did really like the mirrorless more than I thought I would so after returning home, I bought the R6 mark ii. Used it for an engagement session a few days later and love it. I could see my next international trip being all mirrorless.

I am stuck with the M10, still use it. The only complain with it is just the video autofocus. But for photography, I think I kinda miss the dslrs such as the 50D, or even If I one day have the budget, I have been thinking to get myself a 5d classic. I have been wanting a full frame due to the shallower dof on the same focal length, plus the wider image area. So the old 5d should be great. And also I have heard about its colours, which is somehow closer to film look. But that is another story, IF i one day have the budget.

I suppose I could have squeezed a couple more years out of the M6 but decided to sell while the EF-M still had value in the used market. The specs of the 90D are similar to the M6 but is native to the EF lenses in my collection. I'll miss the compact form factor of the M6 but the 90D has far better battery life.

Today I am having an incredibly sad day when I found out that I will no longer be able to buy a telephoto lens for the Canon M50 Mark II anywhere. A little while ago I was crying and wailing on your video that you posted 3 years ago.
Thank you for this almost philosophical attitude that eases my pain. You are indeed a wise man. Your vision is more real than my poor lament. But even so, I have to say that Canon shook my confidence. A camera is different than a computer or a car. With a computer, I have to know that it will inevitably grow old and go away - most computers are only for work or superficial entertainment, but a camera is a purely creative, magical thing. The day I get it, probably no one will buy the entire arsenal of all lenses at once - on the contrary, I have to have time to slowly find out where my photos will take me. My journey must mature. However, Canon did not give me the necessary time. With the decision to buy the device, I am also deciding for the entire system, which of course has no continuation. It's a betrayal. I can't afford to keep buying new cameras. The M50 Mark II is still new to my taste and I fell in love with it.
But your look comforts me. I just don't know whether to have the lens sent from Japan via eBay - after all, it can't survive the trip in good health. I may even say goodbye to my dream of a telephoto lens today - maybe it's childish to want to photograph birds somewhere in the distance. Maybe you won me over for the 22mm dream, even though this range is in the kit lens 15-45mm.

You could make the argument that used M50 lens prices might not fall for a while. I just bought a new Canon EF-M 55-200mm lens on Ebay new instead of used for $50 less. (For the price difference why risk a used lens problem? For me a used discount is 50% of new). Being discontinued I had to compete my lens set before they're no available anywhere. As an occasional user I have no interest in spending another $1,000 or so for a non entry level kit only to chose another system that gets discontinued. And, I needed the lens now. Not in a year when it might be at 50% price.

There are a lot of Canon M mount bodies out there. I suspect that there are third party lenses in development which will come out in M mount versions. Sigma crop sensor lenses have interchangeable mounts, so there is little reason for Sigma to stop production of M mount in the near term. That said, I already have two of the Sigma M-mount trio. I just ordered a used Canon M6 Mark II body from Japan to use as a second video camera. I also just ordered a 55-200mm M-mount lens. It has image stabilization.

Not going to sell my M series lenses any time soon. I still have yet to get enough use out of them. I really like compact gear for example I own MFT gear, ZV-1, Sony HX-80, Canon SX-740 and I bought EF-M gear because its also small. I have mobility issues so large heavy gear is a no-no. You didn't mention that you can still adapt EF & EF-S lenses as an alternative. I'm still chuffed with my M50 i & ii and M200 including video. Let's be honest Viltrox, Sigma & Chinese manual lenses have kept the system going for longer. Canon's attitude to the M series and their owners has been nothing short of shocking. I will not be upgrading to Canon RF, I can't trust them anymore. I'm slowly migrating to Sony APS-C. I have the ZV-E10 and few lenses, I love the quality of the 11mm f1.8. Goodbye Canon and your Canon cripple. A blessing in disguise indeed.

I really love my M50ii. Got it when my Panasonic TZ200 conked out in March 2023. I was aware the EF-M system was on the way out, but it suited my needs and importantly budget. Got the body and kit lense new on special for $800 AUD, a second hand 55-200 mm in Tokyo for $292 AUD and the 22mm prime for $160 AUD (inc postage) second hand on eBay. Probably another $120ish on bag, quick release clips, screen protector and spare batteries. The small size and weight is perfect for bush walks and when I am out on my bike. With 22mm prime it is not much bigger than the Panasonic and probably smaller than my old Canon G12 powershot that took great photos until the lense got scratched. I am hoping that the M50ii will give me many years of fun.

Canon never took the M seriously, like Nikon never took the 1 series seriously. It gave them a bit of experience with mirrorless, but they probably learned more from Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, and Fujifilm than from their own pursuits. I feel sorry for those who spent a lot of money to buy M lenses and bodies. The good news is that they should be able to pick up any M gear they want, really inexpensively, on the used market...

  • @RafaPolit

I am not sure I agree with the premise. Yes, the image quality will be the same, and if the product catalog was full featured, I would agree. But you buy into an ecosystem as an "early adopter" with the promise that it will expand. It would be similar to buy the RF-S system right now: you have 3 or 4 lenses available to you, but you buy into the promise that this ecosystem will grow and you will get better lenses, with more useful ranges, or faster apertures, etc. But if you purchase an RF-S now and the system is discontinued, you would be stuck with a "half fulfilled ecosystem". So systems from this giants like Canon or Nikon should, at least, live for 10 or 20 years to allow for users to actually live healthy within the ecosystem. I would be really pissed had I bought into the M ecosystem right now.

While at the same time you get "pro level" features on their budget cams like clean HDMI and audio monitoring. I'm keeping my M50 MK1 that I got for 400 w/ kit and 22mm f2, since I feel that I still have a lot to learn/prioritize what features I want for the next upgrade.
