Here is the reason that I can justify Giles giving the "gift" of a substantial amount of money to help her out. In "Checkpoint" in S5, Buffy managed to negotiate reinstatement, a raise, and retroactive pay from the Council for Giles. Plus I've always been a bit miffed that the Council doesn't provide some kind of financial support to Slayers.

Let's remember, Giles was always being paid as school librarian, and as a Watcher for The Council, and now as owner of The Magic Box. We now understand why he spent Season 4 happily unemployed, a man of leisure, he'd been double dipping the whole time! The least he can do is share some of that with Buffy. Unfortunately, while Buffy had The Council over a barrel, she didn't think about getting something for herself, only for Giles.

They did that whole sequence wrong, imo. If the idea is Buffy is experiencing time at a different rate than everyone else, then Buffy should've just been standing there frozen for hours. Tara would of course eventually leave to go get help, but Buffy just standing there would definitely draw the attention of a crowd. Given that it's a college campus, she'd probably also have little paper streamers and/or a hat on her when she snaps out of it. The way everybody ignored her completely suggests that she was also invisible while she was out of sync, but then I would've expected more people to walk straight into her and it only happened once.

See that didn't bother me cause they were looking after Dawn and making sure the house didn't get sold/she didn't go to her dad or into foster care. So then using it to pay for utilities, food etc for the house they're all in seems fair enough to me, it's not like they bought a hot tub and went on holiday with the money after all. I guess one of them should have got a job or whatever but it's pretty reasonable to say that any job they'd be able to get in Sunnydale probably doesn't pay to support a family of 3 while also allowing them to go to college and do the world saving stuff they do. I can't fault a bunch of college kids for not dealing with that situation particularly well.
The thing in this ep that bothered me was Anya and Giles actually being like "oh we'll take it out of your wages" cause she forgot to get the delivery fee, was a bit too far, like... maybe cut Buffy a bit of slack on her first day? Since it's a fault with your training of her afterall and they didn't even bother to find out why she just left without saying a word. It's a comedy episode though, so it's just the humor clashing with the reality of the situation a bit.

Regardless of how the life insurance was spent, even if it was for Dawn's benefit, now that it's running low they should be chipping in. They are benefiting by being there. They are adults. Even Xander is paying rent for his basement 🤷‍♀️ and that's HIS parents house, not his friends parents. The only ones who should be living rent free are Dawn (a minor) and Spike (who has no running water, heat,ect.... although --- how does he get electricity for his TV in the crypt 🤔 and any type of signal?).
And even Spike gambles, charges for helping occasionally and shows other ways of thinking about needing $$. Tara and Willow act like they have no need for it. Are their parents still paying for college, clothes, wicca supplies, etc? Or is that draining the life insurance as well??

I don't think I will ever not laugh at, "Stop touching my magic bone."
Willow and Tara not understanding school issues, Xander firing her, Anya critisizing the sale (which involves Giles because he didn't say anything about said sale and wasn't listening when she was saying something during the loop). There's a reason Buffy went to Spike. On top of being resurected by those four minus Giles (in reguards to life/jobs), they, plus Giles, are playing by human rules and she is constantly bogged down by Slayer issues they can only pretend to understand. Giles suggestion about policework for Buffy in helping combine being the slayer with a job is one of the few things that could work because there would be some excuse for her slayer behavior and Sunnydale is the only place that wouldn't care about her record, and to be a police officer you can't have a record, juvie or adult.

I _really_ hate this episode. I actually think it's incredibly stupid, because it was clearly contrived to exhaust all of the logical avenues for Buffy to pursue. Like, nope, Buffy can't work at the magic shop, because that would make too much sense... 🤦‍♂
And could the Trio be more cartoonish? Seriously it's like they've stepped out of a bad comic book and it's painful. Why are they even wasting their time with this crap?
Warren a ) built a wireless camera _that's smaller than a button_ and could broadcast in HD (in 2002!), b ) and in this tiny gizmo he could also create a device that manipulates the flow of time locally... This is to say noting of the ultra-realistic androids he's built. Forget Sunnydale, forget these other two; it's the early Aughts, during the Dot Com bubble and he's living in California. He needs to get his ass to Silicon Valley and collect a huge payday and spend the rest of his days competing with other billionaires to see who can shoot the best rocket into space.
Even Jonathan's spell manipulated time too; somehow creating a time loop within the magic shop, but which they could watch from outside in the van.... 🤦‍♂
The construction one was just... dumb.
To compound the stupidity of all this, Xander's incredulous about demons attacking the site - seriously, in Sunnydale?
During the time loop, did Jonathan's spell also make Giles and Anya oblivious to everything going on? The part that really pisses me off is Anya taking the shipping out of Buffy's pay and Giles going along with it. BS. Buffy's ringing up a customer for the first time - a shipped order no less - and neither Giles or Anya are going over the process with her step by step to make sure she understand how everything is done and that nothing get overlooked, like the shipping?? No, that is on them.

Eh I wouldn't find it difficult for Buffy to accept that cheque from Giles after realising he was being paid a Watchers salary off the back of Buffy for those few years, then in season 5 she has the council reinstate his salary with backpay. My solution to Buffy needing a job has always been the idea that Giles should have made her security, since The Magic Shop has always been the #1 murder hotspot of Sunnydale outside of the highschool/bronze years, he could have need for a Slayer making the place safer.

Giles' dream features Buffy acting like a toddler while he is with his British girlfriend pushing a baby carriage. Giles has been conflicted for a while between his duty to Buffy and his desire to go home and have a life and family of his own. He is worried that Buffy is leaning on him too much, that she needs to transition to adulthood.

    Hello, Jules.💜
A highly amusing, slapstick sort of episode here, with some fairly serious overtones, and a, seemingly, complete lack of concern on the part of all the Scoobs. I guess they are just blissfully lucky there seems to be some grocery monies left, so they can continue to mooch off Buffy and Dawn. 😤
Yes, I do indeed agree with you, college is most assuredly not the correct choice in Buffy's life, or situation. College won’t do anything for her, long or short term.
Buffy seems to still be somewhat dazed and confused, like Tara - just not quite the same person, and lacking any sort of real confidence all around.
2:59 - that rotating dish popping out of the top of their van is so much more low-key that the Death Star painting on the side. And the fact that they can sit there, doing that sort of goofiness, and not one of the uninhibited college students would not notice them is somewhat unbelievable. 🤣🤣
Paid by the hour - slow down. Yeah, that I have definitely heard before.
I also have some questions about the placement of the spy camera inside the Magic shop - how would that get by Anya? An after hours break in maybe, or spell, but you would think, most especially a real magic store, would have some protections, or at least detection schemes. 🤔
The friends are freeloaders. They seem to have no remorse. Nor concern, for the problems facing Buffy and Dawn. It’s all just - “Yeah she’s just not back yet - Hey let’s eat!”
Giles, and Spike are the only adults on her side in this it seems.
I think, or hope, that the money from Giles, will do a lot to get Buffy back on track, although, like you, I found the closing line - “ … makes me feel safe, knowing you’re always going to be here.” combined with the look on his face, as she turned away, fairly ominous.
I also agree that, whilst they are extremely inept socially, the 3 goof balls definitely have the potential to be suddenly, and most likely unexpectedly, very dangerous.
A very good episode today. I am anxious to see where all this is leading us.
Have a wonderful Saturday, Jules.💜🤗💜 Have a great meal - dine out, or take away. Enjoy your weekend! 😋
I am having the promised rain today, and the wind is a doozy - 48 km/h - 85 km/h in gusts.🌬🌬 It is currently playing with my potted trees, on the balcony - tipping and spinning. Small tree limbs down in the neighborhood, and flickering lights, but all is good. It will be dying down in 3 - 4 hours.

I love that our thoughts are aligned here with this episode! The look on Giles' face was concerning, as is the trio. I mean, they are fine NOW but they do seem to know a lot of magic (can anyone in Sunnydale say a few words and presto, something happens?), and they actually seem to be smart as well. I'm just hoping it stays more on the Big Bad Comedy side as we definitely need a bit of laughs every now and then.
Have a wonderful evening, Dear Tom 🤗💜 be safe, careful, and be well!

    @stargazer1682 День тому +1

This episode also commonly brings up the question of why the Council doesn't pay the Slayer, since it was confirmed in season 5 that they do in fact pay their Watchers; what with Giles getting back pay from the time he was fired from the Council.
Honestly, it's on brand for them not to pay the Slayer. They don't want the Slayer to become independent; they want her reliant on the Council.
The issue I do take is that, Giles knows how this works, but he should also know that Buffy can't realistically hold down a job and be the Slayer; she can't burn the candle at both ends. Sure, he gave her a check, apparently a substantial one, but that's a short term remedy. A better solution would be to just outright give her the pay he gets from the Council and effectively make it so she's paid by them, just indirectly. The fan consensus is typically that that's part of the reason the Council pays the Watcher anyway; with the understanding that a Slayer's Watcher will use at least some of that money to see to the Slayer's basic needs. Especially since, based on what we've heard from Kendra and to some degree Faith, the picture painted is that the Watcher effectively becomes the Slayer's guardian before she comes of age and doesn't live much longer after becoming adult - if she makes it that far. So that might as well be what that money gets put towards.
Alternatively - and this may not seem as fair, but more pragmatic - Giles could sign over his stake in the magic shop and let Buffy be the Silent Partner. The contentious part is that some people would say it's not Giles' responsibility, but arguably he has some stake in this. He's Buffy's Watcher and while she may be an adult now, Giles knows better than anyone what it means for Buffy to be the Slayer and the weight of that responsibility. He should also be the first person to want Buffy to be able to have some semblance of a normal life; and while having a "regular" job might seem like the solution for that, it's not realistic. Working a normal job by day and being the Slayer by night presents risks from a split focus that should be obvious to everyone; risks the Slayer (and the Watcher) can't afford.
Giles seems to have some degree of means; he wasn't hard up for money during season 4 and they said in season 5 the only reason he actually bought the magic shop was because he was bored and didn't want the Scoobies meeting in his apartment. Giving Buffy his stake in the business is a means to an end.
Alternatively, she could be giving self-defense classes in the training room in the back of the magic shop.
My top pick is that Giles should help Buffy open a funeral home. On average, funeral directors need roughly two years of schooling, and Buffy's already got about year. It'd be the perfect front for the Slayer. It'd explain her coming and going from the cemeteries all the time. She'd get advanced warning about various attacks, with the recently deceased being brought to her. And I say add some holy water to the embalming fluid and vamps go poof upon turning.
Giles could probably get things set up and have her work as his apprentice while she finishes school.

Yay here we are back again. Nope we never get to see the angel buffy post resurrection meeting though I think Wesley and Cordelia gave us a pretty accurate depiction of it Dramatization let's say. This is Joss Whedon short hand for while these two characters in this wpr;d would get together after these events there is actually nothing new that will happen between them. The Angel-buffy arc has mostly run its course. It also left him a lost episode he could return too if new inspiration ever struck him.

I assume that whatever rent and bills Willow and Tara were paying for their dorm rooms in the previous season, they're now paying towards the upkeep of the Summers house -- but I also assume that the money to pay for two college dorm rooms isn't nearly enough to pay for a three-bedroom house, so the bills are mounting.
(I'm also shocked by the number of fans who assume, without evidence, that Willow and Tara are not paying anything towards the house.)
It might be better financially for Buffy to sell the house, but I doubt she's in any mental or emotional state to consider that right now. Also, as the bank advisor told her in the previous episode. Sunnydale property values are so low (and falling) that her house is 'losing equity' -- I assume that means it's now worth less than the mortgage on it.

22:37 Not sure how it is in Australia, but here in America, you can sell a house even if the mortgage isn't paid off, as long as the value of the house is greater than the remaining mortgage. The new owner will give you a down payment, their bank will pay you the rest, and then you can use that huge amount of money to pay off your own mortgage with your bank and still have a good amount left over for yourself. Then again, Buffy's house may not be worth as much as the remaining mortgage, since Sunnydale property values have never been competitive.

Ironically, Sarah knew more about construction than Nicholas. I appreciated the Monty Python reference during the shop scene, shame you edited it out. "This mummy hand has ceased to be! It is an ex-mummy hand!" DrunkBuffy is funnier than CaveBuffy. If she was trying to get a mortgage, I assume they owned the house (sounds like a rare thing in America, these days). Since Joyce had thought ahead, it's fair to assume the house was also in Buffy's name. That's what my mother did after the first cancer. Unfortunately, it was a good idea.
After five years working in America, Anthony wanted to spend more time with his family, back in the UK. I didn't find out until later that some fans were unreasonably stroppy about his reduced presence in the show.

Unpopular opinion but I think Giles should have given her money a long time ago. Remember, he was getting paid as a watcher and even got paid for the years he wasn’t a watcher thanks to Buffy. I know its not his fault that slayers dont get paid, but I think the respectable thing to do would be to give all or most of his watcher money to buffy and just live off his librarian/store owner income.
I still dont understand how they allowed faith to live the way she lived as a teen slayer. I mean she was clearly struggling just to pay the motel fees and she probably wasn’t eating regularly with how she scarfed down buffy’s food.

Yeah, I remember being confused when it looked like the Trio would be the Big Bads, but after a while I realised it makes sense. This season focuses on a lot of heavy character arcs, so it makes sense to have a smaller, sillier Big Bad. Plus, after the previous Big Bad was a literal god, where do you go after that? It's like how after Season Three ended on such a big note with the Mayor, Season Four had a smaller scale Big Bad.
That said, just because Warren, Jonathan and Andrew seem like idiots, they shouldn't be underestimated. There's nothing more dangerous than an idiot with power.
As for Buffy trying to figure out her next step, it's both funny and heartbreaking. It's always irked me though, just how little help her friends are. Willow and Tara have been living in the Summers house for months, yet they don't make any attempts to help with expenses. I always got the feeling that after bringing Buffy back they just expected her to carry on while they got on with their own lives. It's why Spike's the only one she feels she can open up to now.
I'm just glad that Giles stepped up to help. That final shot is concerning though, and it sets up my favourite moment from my favourite scene, which I believe we're only two weeks away from.

i don't think the writers cared too much about the logic of the minutia of the finances too much. they wanted the characters in the house together for the sake of plot. any rights and wrongs that we make up in our heads about the fairness of it all is really not relevant to me. if the writers didn't care to go into the rights and wrongs and decided not to give us details of who's paying rent etc. then i take it that we as viewers are not supposed to care about it all. if they wanted that stuff to be a point of contention between characters they'd have written it in. i just don't bother thinking about it. i give the writers a break and let them have the characters in the house without having to justify all the nitty gritty of the finances. the level they went to here is enough for me to be ok. i don't read thing into what is not shown. for instance they did not want us to watch and hate on a character for not paying rent. they just wanted them together and if they don't want unfair living situations to be the narrative i'm happy to go along with it.
