  • Using the bottom hand in Spey casting is a must, and also happens to be one part of the casting that remains difficult for many anglers. In today's video, our own James Millard explains a couple ways to train your brain to use that bottom hand. Hope you enjoy!

This is funny. When I stopped holding the bottom handle like that (just a couple finger down low) and listened to Bruce kruk and Travis Johnson about using your whole hand with your thumb aligned with the rod, my casts improved significantly 🤷‍♂️

We can agree that the full bottom hand would be beneficial when casting longer, heavier rods. It will help generate more power to handle longer lines.
The technique we provide in this video is specific to Skagit casting with shorter rods and heads. It’s a technique we learned from Ed Ward.

@@OPSkagit I have also been thought by the two mentioned above to use a full grip on the bottom with the thumb on top, however I agree that that is for longer lines and at least for me using the grip you describe works better for short heads. I’ve been practicing my casting for many many years and still struggle to cast short heads so I really appreciate your videos, they always give me something to consider that help me to incorporate into my casting. Thanks for this video and all your casting videos, please keep them coming.
