What is very fascinating is the amount of fetish influences that shimmered inside the Goth scene. Even early on you see fishnet/nylons, lace, corsets, leather and latex emerging. Which is of course an indication on how Goth stands towards mainstream society. The fact that Goth subculture uses the very garments that mainstream society rather keeps inside the bedroom shows that the movement really wants to steer clear of the conformism. Even this very day this kind of fetish influence is still going very strong and became an essential part of Goth.
Those fetish styles were also very popular in early Punk movement. Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood had a store in London called "SEX" ( started in 1974) that was the birthplace of the punk fashion look (as well as the band The Sex Pistols). They sold fetish and bondage wear plus Vivienne's own designs, but it wasn't a typical 'adult novelties' shop, they were sold to teens and young adults more as fashion and not marketed to people who actually participated in kink lifestyles.
I feel Siouxsie still took more inspiration from the punk subculture really though. And related more to it too, since she was a dedicated fan of the Pistols back in the days.
I would say it really started in the late 70's. Bauhaus' first single Bela Lugosi's Dead was released 1979. Siouxsie and the Banshees formed 1978. Killing Joke formed 1978. The Damned formed 1976 (not mentioned in your video but also one of the first goth bands). These bands did not call themselves goth, they called themselves punk or post-punk, it was really the music press in UK that came up with that name 'Gothic' and it was originally an insult.
They were very popular with kids in the UK in the late 70s, but yeah, Goth didn't really come to America til the early 80s & then finally got to everyone (not just NYC & LA) by mid decade. A few years later, with the success of Tim Burton & the Cure, it finally hit the mainstream. Mystery Date, btw, is a brand new Goth band out of Chicago. Check out their latest video & let them know what you think: ua-cam.com/video/7_wF0B4ki6k/v-deo.html
I'm going to a trad event tomorrow, what a coincidence :P. The trad goth movement is the one I identify the most with because to me it looks the most interesting visually and of course the music is awesome. Of course I do like other genres of goth music, but even if I listen to tons of them, I always come back to the original bands. Btw I love that song :). She Past Away is awesome.
Fun fact: the book shown, Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace, has a tumblr account called nowthisisgothic. Their posts helped me figure out what I liked and how to do my hair
I've been listening to goth music since i was very little (due to a very cool mum) and have been in the alt community since i discovered emo about 6 years ago. I've recently delved into the goth style to match my music taste and your video has really helped educate me on the things i didn't know yet! Thankyou!
A significant precursor to Goth/EBM zeitgeist (Nitzer Ebb, etc..) was Einstürzende Neubauten and their album Kollaps (1981) on the avant-garde edge with rhythm and melody deconstructed into found sounds.
I think you did a pretty good job explaining the basics of this sub genre of our culture. It is a good foundation and is important to know the origins of where things started.👍💀💜
Thank you, honestly I am an 80's baby and a 90's kid who grew up with the best of many worlds. Being exposed to bands such as The Cure, Slasher films, Horror films, Thillers and Chillers, books etc; on top of alot of psychological fucked up realities steaming from real life hells, whether from myself or others closest to me, goth has always been the cloak to my shadow and it seems there is alot more that I must learn.
While the Cure musically holds its own gothwise, he did break off of Siouxsie and the Banshees after all. So the hate between the two is not really known unless you ask a trad goth, it was there. Siouxsie's creativity outdoes Robert Smiths gothiness if you ask me. So while Siouxsie & the Banshees didn't label themselves as goth, they were creatively more goth than the Cure in that aspect. Because I grew up goth with Siouxsie & the Banshees, I put off listening to the Cure. Maybe too long, the Cure is good in its own way. If you know, Robert Smith broke off of being a part of Siouxsie & the Banshees and became the Cure, with a vile hatred between the two as far as I can tell. I thought I was a late bloomer to being goth, and shy on top of that, so I was a loner pretty much in my gothiness in the 90s. I did meet Siouxsie herself on tour as the Creatures in Detriot, a moment I will always remember. It is too bad I didn't get to it earlier, in those days they said goth was dying and other such things and it felt like I was missing out on something. Guess what, Goth never died like they said it would, it trickles on. Now the only thing I wonder, is why does in endure when other fads fade into darkenss, pun intended. :)
Ps tho still a great video 🦇🖤 Anyone have questions, feel free to ask! I’m old lol 42, been in the scene since I was a teenager in the 90’s, I love educating people on the subculture!
you explained things well but i would like to point out that not all goth people are pale and i see a lot of lack of acknowledgment for goth people of different skin tones
Paige Hall look like death is not specifically white, pale can be considered differently depending on the normal skin tone the person has. But you are totally right, most information I personally have comes from UK sources where most people are white...
Omg, just stumbled upon this video! I didn’t know you had a UA-cam channel! Very good video, I immediately subscribed :) Greetz, that ginger girl without curls that is the best friend of the one with the curls from Infekted :p
Thank you very much Cathy for this first part of the goth subculture overview and it's really interesting to see the fetish aspect going in it just from start, showing it just want to raise against normal mainstream these days... oh and all the nice bands from these days... all the younger goths can learn a lot of early goth scene as well... thank you and looking forward to your next part... btw you are looking awesome as always and I love this nice brachelet you're wearing... have a nice weekend... 😃👍🖤
I have to agree that Trad goths are born from and associated with the punk scene. The style and most of the original goth bands were indeed punk. Infact bands such as Bauhaus, Siousxie and the Banshees, The Damned and The Cure did not call themselves goth but referred to themselves simply as punk with a darker element.
Interesting vid!🤘🏻 It's funny, looking back as a 40 yr old now (was in my mid-teens in high school- graduated 1999), I find it so weird that in the US (at least around where I lived) in the 90's there was a big split between alt/grunge kids, "scene" kids & goths. I remember the goths were always picked on & even BY the alt/grunge kids, etc. Not always, but some times. It's so weird cuz those groups had so much in common. We just couldn't see it then.😋 (Edit: In case ur wondering, I was an alt/grunge chick.. Chain wallet & everything! 😛 Didn't bully tho!)
Orphea333 that’s unfortunately not the right link :( And I probably didn’t explain myself correctly, I mean the see-through spiderweb top you are wearing in the video

I think so too, even if I am in no way into any type of fetish culture, I do appreciate the fashion =)

Siouxsie in that yellow dress! You know you are goth when you can make yellow look spooky
indeed! ^^ thank you for watching!

thank you so much! I'll add to it as I go, but the basics are in it ^^
Very informative video. A lot of babybats could learn from this video.
thank you!
Temptation (7” Version) by New Order will always be one of my favorite songs

A lot of those bands are more along the lines of death rock, but still a sub genre of goth for sure and some of my favorites.
