  • Every graphic designer suffers from lack of confidence at some point in their career. So what's the secret to improving?
    The more work you do, the more mistakes you make, and hopefully, the more lessons you can apply on your next project.
    The only way you'll improve and gain confidence as a graphic designer is by creating as much work as possible.

    Don't let your lack of confidence cripple you. Keep creating and enjoy the process! Also, hope you dug the real client project as an example. Going to try and do more of that in future videos!

    I have a tenancy to over work/ overthink about any project I take-on. I have to keep reminding myself "Less is more", whenever I design.

    Also another tip, I use Canva to throw together quick design concepts and then rebuild it on the adobe creative suite ( if necessary ) Only reason I do this is its quicker to try out different design styles to see what sticks best.

    Thanks for this video! I have been struggling with burnout recently and my work has been feeling its taking waaaay too long to complete and even when I'm done, Im not sure that it's good enough - your video helped me feel like I have a bit more direction and more importantly, more patience and confidence in what I'm doing. Thanks Brent!

    We all go through moments of insecurity. As Brent points out Confidence is key. We work with many designers as CDs but we aren’t absolved from these same feelings. Love the breakdown as well as your process for getting un-stuck. Keep things simple, focus on some key guiding attributes and think about the story you are trying to tell for the viewer, those always help us :)

    appreciate the encouragement! I am recently in a position to work freelance full time, and last few days have been down over personal stuff. It is hard sometimes to get into that creative mode when you've got those blues... anyways, I just typed in "freelance graphic design encouragement" ... lol... just to see what came up. So hey, thanks :)

    What I'll do is entwine my fingers and my hands on my stomach and lay down on my chair closing my eyes and imagine how the different ideas might look like. Maybe sketches will also help me. I feel so encouraged because of you. I have hit the wall here... SUBBED!

    I agree 1000% . What came to mind was those who can’t do teach, those who can do, do it everyday. I’ve given up so many times and had I not, I know my artwork would’ve come a long way. I got burned out. But mainly got so tired of all the rejection. Trying to do it in the corporate world too, just discouraged me. But, it’s part of me. ❤

    This was super nice. I just started my first job as a junior designer and I’m trying to prepare myself as much as I can to succeed. It’s my 4th day tomorrow and each day I’ve had to make 3 logo options for a project our company is doing. I’ve only done work for like two clients in the past. One my mom and two a friend of a friend for a project outside of school and work.

    Thank you so much for your video Brent. I've just got into graphic design and social media marketing for a big law firm who really uphold high standards in our external facing brand. Although it has been tough at times being 9 months into the job and still feeling like I am not good enough for design, your video has motivated me to keep practicing and learning about GD theory. Thank you!

      @@BrentGalloway would you recommend any books to start learning graphic design theory? I'm fine using the applications (Photoshop, InDesign, etc) but I want to take my design to the next level by being more aware of grids, typefaces, white space, etc. any suggestions would be really helpful :)

    • @BrentGalloway
      @BrentGalloway  4 роки тому

      Nothing specific comes to mind unfortunately. Over the last decade I've pulled info from so many different sources: blog posts, UA-cam videos, or Skillshare classes. There's no single book or course that'll teach you everything you need to know. If there's a specific area where you want to improve, Google and learn about that one thing, then apply it. I'd also recommend following people who specialize in the work you want to be doing. Observe their work. Dissect it and understand why it's "good". The more you observe-but more importantly-CREATE, the faster you'll level-up your skills. Hope that helps!

    I actually like the one @ 3:15 - except the meteor part.
    I like the 3rd option better, but still not the meteor. The yellow fonts, yes tho. The textures, yes.
    The new back, I like the tour dates best in 2 columns. Purple outline looks good.
    I don't like the yellow box around his face.

    The details comes in the graphic justifications, not on the design it self. A logo is basicaly supposed to represent the company based on what they do and their values, so even before trying to go on papers/computer to start creating. You need assemble a folder of graphic references in deep details, and then you'll be able to create a logo with confidence. Because you know you're telling the story of the company based on the research you made, before creating. And you'll be able to back up your ideas if the client isn't fulfilled with the logo you made, or choose one which is completely trash Because you ran out of ideas and it's story to fill up the blanck. Even tho it ain't really professionnal. ( if we're creating logos it's just a specific type of graphic product, then on other projects it's a bit different but still coming from the same base )

    • @BrentGalloway
      @BrentGalloway  5 років тому +1

      You make them up yourself! The goal is to not stop working even when the work stops. Take your favorite brand and redesign their logo, design a shirt for your favorite band, design a poster for your favorite movie... The ideas are endless. It's all about having fun and enjoying the process of creating. And by creating, you're learning new things. If you scroll down on my Instagram feed, you'll see that I was creating designs for the fun of it, and putting them on t-shirts. By putting that out there into the world, it landed me real t-shirt design projects. Then those projects would lead to more projects. So even when you don't have real clients, don't stop creating and putting the work out there. Hope that helps!

      Good day Brent, when you say redesign ( do you mean i try to copy and mimic the art such as logos and graphics ? or come up with a different concept all together ?

    • @BrentGalloway
      @BrentGalloway  5 років тому

      You can do both. I'd say copying a design is only okay when it's done as practice and not put out in the world as your own. When I said redesign, I really meant to create a new design in your own interpretation of it. It's important to practice your creative thinking and decision making as well as technical skills.
