  • Tom Allen explains why we sing Do-Re-Mi and not Ut-Re-Mi, as we did for 700 years before someone finally said “UT, that’s not that fun sing”. In a take-off of the Sound of Music, Tom tells the story along with a Julie Andrews look-alike, a mobile accordionist, a girls’ choir, and a lot of bicycles.

    Lyrics:
Let's start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read you begin with A-B-C
When you sing you begin with do-re-mi
    Do-re-mi, do-re-mi
The first three notes just happen to be
    Do-re-mi, do-re-mi
    [Maria:]
    Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti
    [spoken]
Let's see if I can make it easy
Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a drop of golden sun
Me, a name I call myself
Far, a long, long way to run
    Sew, a needle pulling thread
La, a note to follow Sew
Tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do (oh-oh-oh)
