- Three statues and three 10-foot-high stone slabs (one foot for each of the 10 years of legalized slavery in Utah between 1852 and 1862) represent the contributions of all Black pioneers in the settling of Utah and are intended to create a place of learning, reflection and healing.
Three of those featured at the monument - Green Flake and his brothers-in-law, Hark Wales and Oscar Smith - were in the vanguard group of pioneers who arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 22, 1847. The fourth, Jane Elizabeth Manning James, came in September 1847.
The Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dedicated the monument on July 22, 2022.

As a black member of the church I love how the church honors all the saints that have paved the way for religious freedom
As a white Member of the Church, I honor you and all Black Latter Day Saints past and present. I have no words to express my admiration for some of the greatest disciples of Christ that have ever walked the earth. When I see Black Latter Day Saints, I see examples of what it means to live the parable of the unjust judge. I see people who show the rest of us what it means to love our enemies and bless those that curse us. These comments don’t even begin to do justice to black Members of The Church. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for who you are.
A pioneer amongst pioneers. What a interesting and remarkable story. A struggle within a struggle. As a Latter-day Saint, I have always taken pride in the struggle the early Saints had and in their perseverance for their religious freedom and their eventual exile to the west. Green Flake, not only had this struggle but also the struggle for his very freedom as a man. Wow! What faith can be found to match? Mahalo Bro. Bonner for bringing this amazing story to light.
I am so happy that we can remember those who came to utah.
So glad to see this. In my 30+ years in the Church, I had always assumed that all the pioneers were white - I've never seen or heard stories about other pioneers. Hopefully we'll start hearing more and more stories about other pioneers now. Thank you - for the monument and the story that let's us all know about this!💗
I knew only about Jane Manning James.
Me too I'm glad to know I heard there was a woman from India as well and I hope they put status of those from India as well in was told the reason so many thought they were white remember most of our people in America came from England and Scotland and Denmark and Italy where missionaries have gone they have only taught the gospel there and not in far off places like Africa and china and the Islands yet so alot of the men who went on missions were husbands who left there wives who had children to serve and our church doesn't pay and even then our missionaries slept under a wagon or tree
If you study pioneer history you will find that many Blacks were taken in and befriended by the saints.
Stunning AND brave!!!!!
I am a supporter of this amazing honor and historical memorial site! I know it may seem like it is about time, and maybe a little late, but it shows how sacred and marvelous it is to have this strong representation of ALL those who traveled the hardships and faithful steps as pioneers. I am so happy to see the Bonner family also involved and representing. Such power and love amongst our brothers and sisters in Christ. ❤
We appreciate your comment. Thank you!
This is so perfect and so well needed. 😇🥰
I am so appreciative that Mauli Junior Bonner made this all happen. I hope it continues. As a white person, I never heard anything other than about white people, men especially, so it's so enlightening to hear about the contributions that others made. I hope more stories follow, including from other places of people that we are not familiar with (Pacific Islanders).
So happy they were remembered. The first time I learned of Jane Manning James was when I was 25.
My dad told me Greenflake lived around the area where I lived in the Ft. Union area. I have no way to know exactly where he lived, he was buried in the Pioneer cemetery that was on Creek Road that is about 1/5 mile from my old home. I always felt that story was very cool.
How beautiful. America is a long way from race understanding but I am proud that my Church is honoring black saints.
This fills my heart with such joy!

Thank you so much!
Awesome! We are so blessed to have these wonderful people who helped pave the way with "stones of faithfulness," to help inspire everyone who hears these stories to want to love Christ, and others more as a result of their incredible examples! We are all God's children, and are equally created.
"...and he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile."
-Book of Mormon 2Nephi 26:33

One of the greatest Prophecy , Revelation be all worthy male members can hold the Priesthood authority and this is important faith by knowledge to honor your father and mother and be a child of God and all the blessings the Temple has the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints , to Priesthood as my father is to his father , now this is a fold to a blessing covenants that , is as Jesus Christ is and , share love invite to the tree of life and the second coming to millennium the teaching turning the children hearts to his father and the fathers hearts to his children.
I can't wait to see the greatest things to come by the Pioneers that move to now to injoy the fullness together and be accountable for all we have to family the tree more desirable above all and eternal life and the testimony that builds another testament of Jesus Christ.
