This is a motormouth couple car review of the Mazda CX-5 compact SUV. The 2021.5 model Mazda has upgraded all models to the 10.25” display screen with Mazda Connect. The US, got the upgrade to their 2021 model, but Canada lagged behind. There is a huge improvement to the system.
There will be a new 2022 CX-5 coming sometime in the winter and will have a starting price of $30,200 CAD with standard AWD in Canada. The top Signature trim is coming in at $43,350 CAD, a little more than this 2021.5 model. In addition to design updates for 2022, the 2.5T will receive performance improvements. With premium fuel, it will get a bump in horsepower from 250 to 256 and turbo models will also receive paddle shifters to enhance the driving experience. Looking forward to driving it when it arrives sometime next year. n the meantime, let’s focus on the 2021.5 CX-5, this is the one that is available to buy and you may get a better deal on this model as the 2022’s start to trickle in. Do you have any questions for us for our review, we would love to hear from you, leave them below, we’ll choose some of them for our video. What’s new? i-Activsense is now standard on every CX-5 trim which includes, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, pedestrian detection, forward obstruction, radar cruise control with stop & go, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Other standard features include, the 10.25” display and 19” wheels on the GS AWD trim. Our test model is the top Signature trim in Soul Red Crystal Metallic. Mazda embraces the design philosophy “less is more” placing everything you need in arms reach when driving. Mazda uses a simplistic exterior design with lines that reflect light and shadow to give the CX-5 a sense of motion even when parked. The Mazda CX-5 Signature offers a sophisticated interior with a touch of elegance. The beautiful, soft Nappa leather upholstery in Cocoa and Abachi wood trim creates an upscale interior that can easily compete with luxury brands. With improved technology, the standard 10.25” centre display with Mazda Connect is intuitive to use and faster than the outgoing model. Mazda focused on creating a quieter cabin by significantly reducing the noise level of tires and wind especially on the highway. Some standard features of the 2021.5 CX-5 include, a 10.25” display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, push button start, heated front seats and manual recline rear seats. One up from the base model in Canada comes with a power liftgate, leatherette trimmed upholstery, 6-way power driver’s seat, heated steering wheel and a 6 speaker audio system. The GT trim is where you’ll find the extra features like leather trimmed upholstery, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, heated rear seats, 10-way power driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, navigation system and a 7” LCD display.
When it comes to space the CX-5 is not best in class, but it offers a comfortable interior and has plenty of cargo space for our carry-on and a cooler. It is not as long as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, Volkswagen Tiguan and Nissan Rogue but has equal front legroom to the RAV4, more than the Tiguan, but less than the Rogue and CRV. The CX-5 offers competitive second row legroom with the CRV having the most. Overall cargo capacity and cargo space behind the second row is one of the smallest in this class.
JD Power gives the 2021 Mazda CX-5 an impressive overall score of 82/100 and a quality and reliability score of 81/100. CarEdge states the CX-5 will retain 55% of its value over 5 years. Mazda offers a warranty of 3 years with unlimited km in Canada and 3 years or 36,000 miles in the US.

I got a new 2021 Carbon Edition CX5 6 months ago. It looks and drives great. Nice, smooth, quiet ride that feels more like a Euro sedan than a crossover. The fit/finish/ materials used are really up-
scale too. I love the exterior color with 19inch black wheels and the red leather
seats. We are a family of 3 and the CX5 is a good fit. The Mazda dealership has been excellent with both the sale and service too. So in a nutshell I have been very happy with the CX5.

“Jinba Ittai” .... is the term used to describe the symmetry (the balanced connection) ... when ‘the horse and the rider become one’. I’m not so sure I see this design language/philosophy in this particular Mazda, BUT ... the CX-5 is at the top of my list when considering style, drive and ‘bang for the buck’. $10,000 cheaper than any plug-in or hybrid, quieter than most, great materials and fun to drive. What’s not to love? Sorry ... Bank of Toyota fans. Thanks for another excellent review! Cheers.

Hey THANK YOU - you guys nailed this! only critts, moonroof affects handling and this is famous for its handling. Their road noise as disclaimed was on winter tires - should be clarified to be one of the BEST in ITS segment NVH is amazing in this! \absolutely compares as a cheaper alternative to luxury crossovers but when comparing to the big three or the koreans this car is one of the quietest you can buy! - touch screen no thanks, never have to clean a screen in a Mazda other than dust every few months. there are certain things this STUBBORN brand has nailed. ALSO noting this SIZE segment doesnt really have power comparables so it really is the SPORTIEST COMPACT CROSSOVER --- maybe some of these are my opinions or trust this random commenter as a car nerd who has DRIVEN MANY compact crossovers and shopped the options -HARD SHOPPER. (i do not own a mazda i am a tire kicker)but turbo sportage, GONE, turbo forester, GONE. you have to go to a bigger bulkier vehicle now to get these power outputs -ALSO Anyone have good handling ?? debatable but no one has felt as good as the CX-5 (to traditional weight and feedback that inspires confidence because you feel what you are doing with the wheels, NO numbness, AND the on center feeling is one of the BEST ive ever felt period, since 2013 this CX-5 rack has improved to maintain the top handling crossover SINCE its inception it continues to be IMO).
hey hey still here? read it like im talking to you :) enthusiastically, good review guys and i hope your watchers see this comment.
if you are finally stepping out of a car, or SPECIALLY MANUAL DRIVERS - you are going to miss the sportiness in ALMOST all competitors in this segment. Mazda's top seller for a reason and top rated by most critics still almost 10 years old (yes 2017 and newer reflect this design, and a refresh for 2022 as well BUT chassis, tranny, block all manufactured since 2012 in Hiroshima Japan! and now MAZDA is ranked the MOST RELIABLE BRAND IN THE WORLD BY CONSUMER REPORTS. i am just saying. researched compact crossovers for well over 6 years now and hands on, design is subjective yes driving dynamics are not. trust the feedback from professionals/rankers. sure preferences are different but generally speaking, you like sporty, you dont need an Audi or BMW to accomplish your dream daily crossover, just buy a TURBO CX-5 and thank this random commenter with a reply :) )

The biggest thing missing from the CX-5 (and other Mazda models) are hybrid options. 22/27 fuel economy just doesn’t cut it. The CX-50 is getting a Toyota-sourced hybrid option that’s used in the RAV4 and I think CX-5 needs it too

    • @garytaylor3999

I couldn't agree more. Buying a new vehicle by February and unfortunately the CX-50 hybrid will probably not be available. I love the CX-5, but the biggest obstacle is MPG. As we move electric, the least that should have been done was to offer a hybrid.

Too much to ask for a PHEV but wow it would be amazing with the turbo on this car. I'm so disappointed that Mazda is being dragged kicking and screaming into electrification, this would be a no brainer car if it was a hybrid of any kind. As it's not I find myself struggling between this and a Tucson PHEV.

I got lucky and found a 2021 carbon turbo, for sticker, with red interior. It’s still in Japan and I won’t get it til mid January. I jumped on it because I’m getting a lot of money for my 2014 CX5 with 100k miles on it. And next year the carbon won’t have the turbo or the Bose stereo, both of these things are pretty much all I wanted in the car anyway. The carbon looks are a bonus.

Mentioned this on Instagram. I test drove a cx5 21.5 recently and went in concerned about the lack of a touchscreen but realized I could live without. What surprised me was that I couldn’t get comfortable in the drivers seat! I think it was the fact that the seat didn’t tilt up as much as I like. Drove a Bronco sport (no tilt adjustment) and found the same issue. Never had this issue before 🤷🏻‍♂️

I love CX-5. But its infotainment system is definitely feeling outdated, when it compares to newer rivals. The same as CR-V. I have tried to new Mazda3's system, it has improved so much that it has become Japanese carmaker's most efficient system. At least, IMHO. So I think CX-50 and next CX-90 would go the updated swift system. Other than that, CX-5 remains my favourite compact SUV.

I test-drove a Signature CX-5 in November 2021. There was much to like about it, but the infotainment screen was tiny and seemed very 2014 to me. It had no 360 degree view feature. Obviously it was not the 2021.5 model, of which I knew nothing. Inadequate cargo capacity and mediocre fuel economy with the turbo engine were the deal-killers for me, and still would be. Ordered a Hyundai Tucson PHEV instead (which I hope to get before summer 2022 arrives). But I can see how someone with different priorities would love this vehicle.

Just had a 2021 CX-5 non-turbo as a rental in Toronto. Have to disagree about the base engine because the powertrain was easily confused and it was obviously that power management was a big issue because of the 6-speed auto, to a very surprising point actually. Also road noise from the side windows was surprisingly excessive starting at 80 km/h and the CX-5 was not equipped with winter tires. We were quite disappointing with the drive experience. Interior was nice.
Audi Q3 still has a better AWD system than the CX-5 and would be a big decision factor for me although I don't like many other aspects of the Q3.

Would love to hear from Canadian Mazda owners if the company has improved the corrosion resistance of their vehicles. That seems to still be a strength of the premium European brands, albeit with accompanying prices.

Corrosion wise I think they are better than they used to be. At least based on ehat I see everyday on our canadian roads. However it is important to know that their paint ( esp red which I have) tends to chip a lot. So if u dont take care of them by touching up or whatever, then they may rust

Will Never buy a Mazda again.. I had a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 i liked it at first did like how it drove and loved the space but at 24,000km had to get a new transmission, after it was replaced and finally got my car 1 month later as they had to wait for parts.. it never felt the same would jerk forward when hitting the gas when pulling away from a red light. I had it 4 years and was time to shop around I have low km's on my cars and at only 48,000 my CX-5 was not worth anything i still owed on it when i traded it as it was not paid off but never got much on a trade. will never buy a mazda again as they dont hold value.

I prefer the CX-50 over the CX-5. It's longer, wider, more ground clearance, more rugged look, better off road capability, bigger cargo volume, more rear legroom and better towing capacity.

    • @lucarvian
      @lucarvian 2 роки тому +3

CX-50 has a nice design, and I would seriously consider, but all that cheap looking black plastic cladding is a deal breaker for me. It cheapens the look. The manufacturer justification that it makes it more rugged for off road is total load of BS. It's simply a cost saving measure. Having lived for 4 years with a vehicle with the cheap black cladding, constantly fighting to get dirt and grime off off that plastic textured surface and getting it look nice and black again is waaaaaaaay harder than maintaining a painted surface. I would rather have painted cladding and touch up the odd chip than the cheapo plastic. I will NEVER buy another vehicle with that cheap plastic cladding.

I also really like the rotary dial for the infotainment controller and hope Mazda doesn't get rid of it.

I've been driving Mazda's from 1973 until this year. I test drove the GT Turbo. I found city gas mileage quite poor. Was around 13L/100KM average driving around the North Shore of Vancouver. Lots of hills here. I really like the power, but it seems smaller inside than my first generation CX5, which was great on gas, but lacking in power. So I took out a non turbo GS. Lots of features too, but the power wasn't that noticeable from my 1st generation CX5. Better mileage, but I wasn't sold on it. Ended up buying a late model RX350 for around $8,000 less money, and a lot more features and a lot more roomy. Gas mileage is the basically same on the highway at the GT Turbo, but a bit more in the city. Only bad thing was it is used. But being a Lexus, I've had no problems at all and I don't really expect any. It doesn't drive as sporty as the Mazda, but I don't really care much about that any more, being an old b@!tard. LOL
