Mike D: "I'm 19."
Ad Rock: "19."
MCA: "I'm 12."
Hahaha. Yauch had such a humorous, joyful soul. He's my biggest hero ever. We miss you! August 5, 1964 - May 4, 2012.
the funny thing is they all lied lmao
Joan is a legend. RIP Joan and MCA
RIP Joan Rivers and Adam "MCA" Yauch
8:01 the fact that adam & mike chose to end their documentary with this moment... :(
I worked stage crew at the Beastie's first headlining show that Joan Rivers mentions at the top of this video (1:26). It was on January 28, 1987 at University Theater (now called the Dennison Theater), University of Montana, Missoula, Montana. The theater seats 1,100 people. Tickets were sold out and it was a great show. To this day it was the absolute loudest concert I ever worked at or just attended. The Beasties put up 27 enormous Marshall amps and six monitors on stage in a hall that isn't very big. The Beasties, Fishbone and Murphy's Law rocked the house. On the right side of the stage was the female dancer in this video, in a cage. In the middle back of the stage, elevated, was DJ Hurricane. On the left of the stage was a 16 foot tall inflated Budweiser beer can. It was a crazy show, lots of Budweiser spraying of the crowd, not to be missed. I was lucky to have worked it.
It's a beautiful theater. Missoula ain't a very big town, and I'll bet we know some of the same people. Lots of talented and friendly folks in that part of the world. l sure miss it.
Jake, I don't know why you feel that way. I worked stage crew at the show while I was going to college at UM, so that's all there is to say. It was a great concert.
Lucky Bastard
Awesome story! Thanks so much for sharing! What an absolute thrill it must have been... makes my soul happy. Gorgeous!
@Jake B. Jealousy, perhaps? Avoid it, very negative emotion.
is it me or does it seem like Mike D never change his clothes for the whole year of 1987?
Joan was a total champ with the album title comments.
Just great stuff.
"I'm MCA I got nothing to prove. Pay attention my intention is to bust a move."
Rest in peace MCA
Man, it's really hard to believe this was almost 30 years ago! I remember this time like it was yesterday. Who'd have thought they'd enjoy a 30 year career and become legends at this time. They were true hip hop. No one like them ever again sadly.
You gotta laugh at how the Beasties are lying their asses off in the interview.
After this these men became some of the best rappers of our time.
They were definitely popular, but that doesn't make them great rappers. Great performers? Yes. But everything they did was owed to black artists. What you see here is a Bad Brains copy act, an all-black hardcore punk bank. They were formed to directly emulate them. Much of their popularity, just like Eminem, is because of their whiteness in an overwhelmingly black genre that was unapproachable to white America. They were clear about giving credity where credit is due while the nation missed the whole point.
No not everything they did was owed to black artists.
While being the only white kids on the block was a part of their crew stating they are a copy act is a uneducated statement at its finest.
even comparing their first album to other popular rap acts at the time they were inherently different. Run DMC is the only group which I think came close to their style.
While Beastie boys took INSPIRATION from early black rappers. They clearly had skills as rappers and musicians in general.
+Bernie Wiseman And I'm sure you think Elvis and Janis didn't take everything they were doing from black artists, as well. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
Yeah good argument bud.
Way to discredit artists work by claiming false plagiarism
Psuffix Way to cry like a bitch about race for no reason. These dudes pioneered Def Jam so fuck you and Gay Z
That performance of Time To Get Ill at the end was legendary!
Paul revere?
This interview and performance should be added to the library of congress, for its historic and cultural importance. What a cool interview, considering the influence the B Boys have had on hip hop.
Just saw this for the 1st time today - I didn't realize we are the same age - in 1987, I was a year out of high school, living in Texas, & unwittingly missing out on listening to some great new music from a band that has since won my heart forever. Thank you, guys, for once again reminding me to have gratitude.
They were trolling. They were all around 25 or so in 87. Them and Run-DMC were all born circa ‘64.
0:53 I was yelling “Ill, Joan Rivers, ill!”
Joan had balls to have them on . Rip my brother MCA , the Master !!
Love you Joan, Love you Beasties!! :--)
So awesome...look how much the beastie boys evolved from this video. Back then, they set the pace. Since then, they changed things up, but they never forgot there roots. They always incorporated punk/rap in there music. And all three play instruments....so talented.
They were so high at the time minus MCA...One of the best bands of all time...
Lol minus mca??! LMFAO
MIKE D originator of the table knocker
RIP MCA AKA nathanial hornblower
LOVE THE ADROCK RING
Who knew back then what these guys would become...

@ ooooookay
NORMALIZATION OF IGNORANCE that why you’re here
Frik'in awesome! Born 20 years too late. Kick it!!
Not necessarily too late, you found them, that's what counts!
Remember seeing this on tv, unforgettable
Holy cow,a real blast from the past! Had it on tape from back in the day and erased over it. Very cool to see it again,30 years later
I remember this memory crazy enough even tho I was born in 87. When you have family that played this throughout and then watching a lot of MTV at 4 when that 90s era started rolling in. Memories.
RIP Joan, miss your humor very much
Thanks for inventing UA-cam
11:02 Adrock absolutely lost it! 😂😂😂

I love it! B boy til i die!
as a jew, this reminds me of a typical passover dinner. you got the yenta aunt, you got the spoiled kids, you got people spilling food and drink all over the table. the only thing left to do was hide the afikomen.
It's been 3 years, but this comment is beautiful
Love it... &
@@vasocreta speaking of time, notice how quite recent these comments are? I've noticed that on several of these BBoys songs of late. Coming together, perfect timing.
I saw them open up for Madanna like a virgin tour!!
i heard they smashed Madonna in that tour or at least Ad Rock did
soundeagle big shock right? Lol
I hear she’s been giving it up to all those graffiti guys
@@bitchnug5295 "I don't hang out with those guys man...Hey man I saw ya female too whasup wit her?" 😂😂😂😂
Love the "Professor Booty" reference!
I saw them open up for the dead Kennedy’s at the reggae lounge in 82
funny, if u watch the recording of them on american bandstand, they were forced to lip sync, so as vendetta, they made it super obvious to the cameras a bunch of times! hahaha, love these guys!
Im going to have to look that one up! 😂
I want a lox bagel now
+Jason Laurian too salty
Their trade offs are incredibly tight in the pocket. Not easy to do and they make it look effortless.
I remember watching The Beastie Boys for the first time (not sure if its this show or another) and thinking are these guys for real or just some joke. They came to New Orleans 86 or 87 and the radio guy in New Orleans played Brass Monkey over and over again until someone at his radio station gave him tickets to concert. So we heard Brass Monkey for 8 hours straight on a Friday night.
I'm from New Orleans too. Was that on b97?
joan, had some great one liners for this episode...i loved the beastie boys but joan struggled to keep this interview on track...the beasties kind of didn't seem to want to give out a lot of info about themselves...
yeah reminds of those crazy middle aged blonde women with major tantrums yet seek happiness but piss everyone off including their own typically son who runs away
This is the 80s I’d love to go back and see
The part towards the end where they all start laughing is a great moment.
MCA getting behind the desk...g shit
RIP
Them going crazy while rapping is probably the best thing I've seen. They're so awesome.
Their Best Song Ever.....i miss you Joan!

They started as a hardcore band in 1979 until 1984 when they switched to hip hop
And if i told you that their first 5 albums have punk hc songs. I think any real BB fan knows that.
I saw them in 82 they opened up for the dead Kennedy’s
Watching This January 1st 2018 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
THEY ARE SO CUTE!!! This is so funny hahaha
"Could I just cut in and say that I love these guys and I've grown up with them and I just love them"
After this these men became some of the best rappers of our time.

Exactly The Day i Was Born on in 1987!! 8) awww yeah!!
this is so funny :)
I did notice that...thought it was only me. Classic!
I love how they were so unique and did their own thing and were so hilarious
Pretty sure these days it's called "cultural appropriation" and millennials and left say it's offensive cause it's like "black face" without the make up
Looking at it now it almost reminds me of Gary and Wyatt in wierd science after they went to the "black bar scene" and he's trying so hard to fit in and speak jive
Lol
That was 80s as fuck.
Awesome. I like in the beginning when she throws her arms out then pulls them back in and she's back in her seat with License to Ill in her hands. License to Joanne.
The 4 coolest people in American history. All together.
