What are your favorite Stephen King books?? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️⬇️⬇️
only read 4 books & my favorite is THE DARK HALF.
The Stand and Thinner. Thinner left me literally breathless. The pace…THAT ending….ohhhh my heart! I really really enjoyed Joyland too👍🏻❤️
Currently Billy Summers
The Green Mile is my ultimate fave 😎
The Green mile... that part you don't like doesn't last that long. Skip the description when you come to it. The rest of the story is worth it.
The biggest disservice that the book world does to SK is consider every book of his “horror”
Yep exactly. He did horror then tried different genres.... not horror other than the horror of man.
He needs to stick to the horror genre...that's where he does his best work, undisputedly!
@@sueture King has fantastic horror novels, but he has a LOT of non-horror that's absolutely top class as well. If he only wrote horror we wouldn't have Shawshank Redemption, The Body (the movie Stand by Me),11/22/63, the Dark Tower series, Dead Zone, The Talisman, the Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes) - and a number of others. King's storytelling is unbelievably versatile, and I agree that it's a shame most people only view him as a horror author.
Any story that deals with Fear, shock and disgust should be considered Horror... Which is any realistic story about Life ... It doesn't have to involve supernatural monsters
And that was my problem with the Horror genre
I avoided them because I thought they wouldn't deal with themes I'd find interesting... I was wrong... They are just tragedies and are still very human
And funnily enough, i read more references from the Bible in Stephen Kings works than in most other authors I read... Sometimes it will because the character is a crazy lunatic preacher OR sometimes it will be someone grappling with their faith in God... Regardless of whether it's in a positive or negative light, I really enjoy that... Because it's very human
And just as many SK readers love to see Dark Tower references... I'm the same way with Biblical Scriptures being quoted/used in fiction... It's rewarding
From the 10 books I've read of his so far I am assuming he was raised in a Christian household
I haven't read pet semetary
But for example, from what I understand with that stories plot
It's not just about the undead killing people. That's your first thought when you think of horror... Something evil that kills
But really it is a story tackling themes of Death/Loss.
About accepting yours and your loved ones mortality ...
And it shows the evil that can come from those who don't accept it
Lastly I want to say... I believe that the general public believe that Stephen Kings works are Horror in the sense that they glorify evil...
But that can't be further from the Truth
Evil is only portrayed as Evil in his works... Evil is not placed upon a pedestal and worshipped... I'm never cheering on Evil when reading his novels... He is not a satanic writer
To be fair, King was not an old man when he wrote Carrie….and apparently he was a teacher (before he switched to being a writer full time) so as a teacher he probably saw a lot of bullying and shaming of students which probably bothered him into writing this story.
He got a lot of the menstruation information from his wife.
Yeah I understand her weirdness towards the book but I don’t find it that weird
Did you like Carrie ? What is your opinion ?
* janitor
I hate Carrie.
My favorite Stephen king books are
1. Billy summers
2. Dolores Claiborne
3. The stand
4. Wizard and glass
5. Insomnia
6. The talisman
7. The long walk
8. Rose madder
9. The wastelands
10.The gunslinger
11. Under the dome
12. Needful things
13. Sleeping beauties
14. Revival
15. Eyes of the dragon
For Carrie, you complain that Stephen King was an old man - it was published when he was 26. You make lots of comments about not connecting with older characters or POVs. That’s more about the reader than the writer.
I read Carrie recently in my late thirties you have to appreciate the psychology of it all
Literally today I thought about how rare my two obsessions felt together and here you are, talking about Stephen King with a Taylor Swift album behind you ❤ Loved the video!!
OMG what a coincidence that you posted this video when I've been rewatching your Stephen King vlogs these past few weeks because I'm finally reading his books and can watch the spoilery parts!! (I asked you which book is your fav in one of your live videos abt a month ago and you said Pet Semetary so I started with that and absolutely loved it) I agreed with all of your opinions in the vlogs so I'm sure I'll agree with the ranking too. And YES KEEP DOING DEDICATED VLOGS FOR THE SK BOOKS YOU READ IN THE FUTURE PLEASE!!
I really do think SK stories hit people differently because, sometimes, where you’re at in your life and/or what’s going on in your life can influence your perception. Sure, it’s that way for a lot of books, but the “when” in your life is significant. Also, if you read a book in the 80s that was written in the 80s it just lands differently because you’re living that same world. 🤷♀️
The Bill Hodges trilogy produced one of his best female characters, Holly, who keeps popping up and sounds like she's getting her own book...take my money now! Rose the Hat and her group was the most compelling part of Doctor Sleep and I would love a full-length book for them. Gerald's Game and Dolores Claiborne are new favorites for me.
I would definitely read Needful Things, it's a classic and Leland Gaunt is an iconic villain! I'd also highly recommend The Dead Zone and Christine for more of his classic work, and Four Past Midnight for a solid short story collection
I feel like Needful Things is criminally underrated, so I second this.
Needful things is a such a wild ride. I will never forget those little old ladies going at each other in the street with such pure rage.
Just finished Needful Things for the second time. Do not bother with the movie, nothing like the book.
The thing is with Stephen King is he has such a diverse backlist and writes such a a variety of books that there are bound to be books that you don’t like. I don’t know of any hardcore Stephen King fans who absolutely love every single book. I feel like we all have those ones we really don’t like *cough cough* Carrie. ❤️
I think with “The Body” many are familiar with the co inn of age movie “Stand By Me” it’s probably one of my favorite movies. Even though it takes place in the 1950’s may can relate, connect and remember when they were twelve. 😊
The Mist is actually really good…open to interpretation kinda ending - nothing like the movie ending at all which was just heartbreaking 💔
I totally agree👍🏻
I didn't care for the movie ending at all. The rest of the movie was good though! The book ending was much better!
@@sarahbarden4135disagree. I loved the dark ending... too many happy endings out there and I'm glad we got a sad ending. Stephen King himself said he likes the ending of the movie more.
@blakedelacruz-xf4fp I appreciate those who preferred the movie ending. We all are entitled to like what we like. I definitely can appreciate a dark ending. I just get sensitive with things concerning children. Otherwise the ending was just fine.
Absolutely love the Schitt's Creek ranking!!! I've haven't read any Stephen King, but if I was going to start I'll probably start with all your "Simply The Best" tier books.
My fav is It! Finished the audiobook in 3 days, it was so good. I've read 24 of his books so far. Currently working through the dark tower series. Love the vids! You're doing great :)
I read the Dark Tower Series. There were some I loved and some I did not.
Not me, someone who owns at least one copy of every single Stephen King book AND considers Schitts Creek to be my favorite comedy TV show XD It's a life bucket list goal of mine to read all of King's books and short story collections, and so far I've finished 27 so I still have a way to go lol
You don't like how King writes women yet you didn't finish Mr. Mercedes? His best female character makes her first appearance in this book which is of course, Holly Gibney.
Joyland was actually surprisingly heartfelt and fun. It’s not a typical King book, but it’s more of a coming-of-age story with a mysterious carnival murder-case at its heart and there’s also a character with ESP.
Salems Lot is my fav. King book. As much as I love the movie I'd have to say I like the book The Shining more. And I Absolutely Love Doctor Sleep. The movie they made is in my Top fav movies list of all Time.
Would love more dedicated Stephen King reading vlogs!
11/22/63 was my book clubs pick for this month but my friend changed her mind ( we each pick a book a month based off genre). I decided to still read it for this month because I’m so curious! I’m so happy that you loved it!
Gaby!! I loved this video! I hope you can read The Outsider. I'm currently reading The book of accidents and I don't know why but it reminds me a lot of the outsider! They have similar vibes I think.
Your editing for this tier ranking is very good. Sometimes when people do this their setup makes it hard to see the screen and the little bubble at the bottom is a good idea.
I have read 18 Stephen King books and The Shining is my favorite 😍 but I also loved 11/22/63. From your tbr I highly recommend Needful Things and also Under the Dome. I loved them both!
Yes needful things and under the dome are really great have you watched the movie adaptation of needful things
@@angelaholmes8888 Yes I've seen it (but it's been quite a while) I think I liked it but I liked the book more 😄
@@lizzielemon yeah needful things movie is pretty out dated definitely needs a remake probably into a miniseries this time
@@angelaholmes8888 Yes I agree! it would work nicely as a mini series!
I'd love to see you do a beginner's guide to Stephen King!! I'm trying to get into his books (I've only read "The Shining" so far) but it would be awesome to see where you recommend people start off! Love you and your videos
You definitely should check out this UA-cam channel called dave reads king the channel gives you 19 reasons on why you should read one of kings books he's going in publishing order because of this channel I have read some of kings books that I wouldn't had given a try like from a Buick 8 and Dolores Claiborne
@@angelaholmes8888 Thanks for the recommendation! :)
@@allygrimaldi1853 oh your welcome 😃
I think salems lot is a good one to read next
Woahhhh Gabby, I was actually thinking to start my first Stephen King sometime soon and you posting a video related to it! 💗😚
Aaaah same!!
You should check out one of kings short story collections first that's what I did I read full dark no stars and then under the dome
@@angelaholmes8888 sureeee! Thanks for the guidance!
I don’t think I’ve ever been so hyped for one of your videos ever as much as I am for this!
Edit 1: you shouldn’t put be upset about only listing 19 and not 20. Coincidence I think not? The number 19 holds significant value in kings multiverse
Please watch Stand by Me. Such a great movie!
I loved Revival, it’s one of my favourites, but fair warning: it is bleak. It’s one of his better endings too.
The Mist is good, but the movie is better - even Stephen King has said this!
Stephen King is SO intimidating to me for some reason… the short story collection with the “Black Mirror” type plot sounds amazing!! 💕
The Mist and Needful Things are God Tier for me so I would love to see your thoughts on those! I have put off reading 11/22/63 for the exact reasons you mentioned so you have inspired me to check it out now thank you! I did have some differing tastes in regards to Doctor Sleep, and The Stand. But I am old school. I read the Stand in middle school and it was one of my first King books. So I have a deep love for it. I am so glad you enjoy King and at the end of the day that is good and sharing the enjoyment! We should all respect and value differing opinions.
I also rank my reading via Shitts Creek and also Friends.
Yes needful things is definitely god tier 💯😃
Can't believe you did Doctor Sleep like that😭😭 But it makes sense -- apparently fans of The Shining are NOT fans of Doctor Sleep, and tbh I kinda hate The Shining and much prefer the sequel😅😂 You should definitely do a reading vlog for Revival! It's so underrated and has such classic King vibes!!
Yes revival is really great but underrated
I really enjoyed Doctor Sleep also
I adore both The shining and Doctor sleep, had no idea people disliked it!
19 is actually a pretty important number in the Stephen King universe so I was like "that's perfect" when you said you read 19😂
Under the Dome and Full Dark, No Stars are my all-time King favs.
Came to the comments to see if anyone said this!
I’ve only read 11/22/63, The Institute and The Body by Stephen King, but I’ve enjoyed them all so I really want to get to the rest of them. I have The Shining, Misery, Pet Sematary, The Stand, It, Under the Dome, the Bachman books and the Green Mile on my TBR so they’re top of my list. I also can’t wait for Fairy Tale to come out later this year, it sounds so good.
You should definitely give Stand by Me a try, it’s so worth a watch.
I also like Schitt’s Creek so you can put me in that Stephen King/Schitt’s Creek fan category 😂
okay but the long walk was the most captivating book i’ve ever read
If you ever do decide to re-read IT one day, the audiobook is absolutely amazing!!
The fact that you've read 19 Stephen King books and did not know the significance of the number 19 is amazing. If you ever read THE DARK TOWER you will know how important the number 19 is. This is an awesome coincidence. Let me give an example: In THE SHINING there is a room numbered 217. King said if you spilt 2 from 17 and add them together you get 19. In DUMA KEY, a lot of names are made up of 19 letters. There are many examples but I won't say because of potential spoilers. But do keep an eye out for the number 19 in Stephen King books (especially if you'll read THE DARK TOWER series.)
I love your Stephen King content the most. This video was a treat. Thank you, Gabby.
I love how the number 19 is so important
I thought the same thing she mention the number 19 !!😂
i agree. the number 19 is an important number in the Dark Tower series
Yes for more reading vlogs dedicated to Stephen King books, The outsider & If it bleeds would be good.
I got The shining and Misery like last month maybe your video is a sign that I should get my hands on those.
Oh my god this is crazy!!
Just started my first Stephen king today, pet sematary and here comes a vid of gabby ♥️with all of his books she's read!
Hope i can go on a king ride this yr!
Pet Semitary is great!
so interesting! Doctor sleep is one of my favorites of his that I've read, and the movie is one of my all-time favorite films. I am not super super obsessed with The Shining so i think im more interested in the effects of what happens in that one on Danny and seeing him get older and then mentoring Abra is super interesting to me. Joyland is a short easy summer-y read so maybe try that one soon? its not mind blowing or scary really, but a nice summeritme book!
Pet Semetary was the book that introduced me to your channel! I never read SK again or any horror really, but I found the real gold mine of thriller and romance recs at your channel and have been here ever since 🥰❤️ ly
I love seeing other peoples rankings of SK because its always different. The Long Walk and the stand are top tier for me. I would swap long walk for Institute.
I love Lisey's Story but I think you have to be a bit older to really appreciate it. I tried it at 23 and thought it was boring but then I read it in my late thirties and it was whole different experience. I personally think Revival is very underrated and think it is so creepy. Also, The Body definitely is better as a movie and the same goes for Silver Bullet aka The Cycle of the Werewolf.
I read The Shining last month and I think the movie is more iconic but I found the book to have more depth😌 gonna try reading It this or next month so wish me luck lol
My favorite SK books are The Stand, Dolores Claiborne, The Long Walk, and Firestarter. I also love Gerald’s Game but it’s incredibly triggering content wise. If you like Night Shift you may enjoy Four Past Midnight, four novellas and some of my fave and most traumatic reading at 12🤣 I also love The Tommyknockers a lot but like I know King hates it and everyone else does, too, but it’s an alien book with some many Easter eggs to the King universe.
I absolutely enjoyed Dolores Claiborne and the stand I also enjoyed the movie adaptation of Dolores Claiborne kathy bates is just perfect in the movie along with Jennifer Jason leigh gerald's game was definitely triggering to me
Hey Gabby, you should read Dolores Clairborne, Needful Things (seriously underrated) and Rose Madder.
I have read 50+ of his works and these are my recommendations considering your taste!
Me and my family worked a long and labor heavy life. Reading books like "Holes" and "The Long Walk" , had me grinning because of how relatable the characters described getting physically exhausted and sore.
Stand by me is one of my all time favorite movies. I have yet to read the body but plan on it soon, the story is far from horror and definitely more of a coming of age friendship story so if you go into it expecting horror I can see how boring that could be, nonetheless you should definitely watch the movie, it is so good and makes me cry every time
King is the man! The thing I love about his books isn't just that they're genuinely scary, but that they're packed with extreme amounts of emotion and a genius understanding of the inner working of the human mind.
I would love to see a reading and movie vlog on The Mist! That specific combo because they have different endings and Stephen King actually likes the movie ending more, so I'd love to know which you end up preferring!
hot take on Carrie lol i get it though. that book has a special place in my heart because that's the first of his ive read. i have to check out night shift. it sounds so good. also i'm currently reading the stand its taking foreverrrrr lol
Lmao I love how you got ahead of the King stans who would inevitably leave ridiculously rude comments below with the “hold your breath” warning 😂 I’m not the biggest fan of King but there’s a few classics I’ll still probably get to eventually! So far The Shining has been my favorite and Revival was pretty good too
I’m defiantly in the need for a gabby vlog with Stephen king books and you should also watch Stand By Me and give us your thoughts on it compared to the book! 😊❤️❤️
The Outsider dedicated reading vlog would be cool & comparing it with tv series is also fun!
Needful Things is my all time favorite King book! Would love to see a future video on it 😁
Loving the Schitt’s Creek Tier rankings Gabby. I agree with your rankings for the books I’ve read. I am getting 11/22/63 at the library today and can’t wait to start it.❤
Also I forgot to mention, Gabby, that you have to read the Bill Hodges trilogy (which are MR MERCEDES, FINDERS KEEPERS and END OF WATCH) before reading THE OUTSIDER and IF IT BLEEDS. The characters from the trilogy carry over to the latter books. But since you've DNF'd MR MERCEDES, I doubt you'll read the rest of the books. It's all up to you, in the end.
The Green Mile was emotional for me. The movie tore my heart into pieces. Revival was 5 stars, read it a few years ago and I still keep thinking about it. It's SUPER weird though, so be prepared to feel like...WTF just happened. Cujo scared the shit out of me when I read it as a teenager. I've been reading his books for almost thirty years. For the past couple of years I've been re-reading them in order of publication so I can refresh my memory.
I really do enjoy watching your stephen king reviews. I also enjoyed your junji ito manga reading vid.
I've read
1. The Dark Half
2. Pet Sematary
3. The Shining
4. Salem's Lot
5. Carrie
6. Nightshift
Now I'm going through skeleton crew I have to say I prefer his long form stories however his short story collections are a great way to get a feel for kings writing in my opinion.😊❤📚
Great video Gabby. The Green Mile is my fave SK book and movie. I have seen the movie a zillion times and it eats me up every time, If you haven’t seen it you must, John Coffey is one of his best characters. I read the books when they were first released and they brought it out in 6 parts and you had to wait a month for the next instalment. The next year they brought it out as a full book and I have read it many times since.
I love your videos. You have such a great presence - you should be on television because it’s so easy to be hooked on watching you because of your personality and enthusiasm. I’ve got to admit I watch a lot of your videos before working on my own writing. Thank you for your videos and your viewpoints. It doesn’t matter whether you agree or disagree with what I think about King books and other works by other authors. Everyone has their own viewpoint. You’ve also inspired me to read the Winter People - great book :-)
Thanks so much Simon, I really appreciate it!! 😌
@@gabbyreads you’re welcome - just please keep going and keep creating. In a world of hatred and greed, your videos and your attitude are a true form of escapism and pleasure. Also start writing that book - if your words are as magical as your videos, it will be a great read
I loved the institute.. I also really enjoyed joyland, Gwendys button box and the girl who loved Tom Gordon but my fav is rita Hayworth and the Shawshank redemption. It soooo good!!!!! The movie is also just as good. It’s not horror but it’s still great.
11/22/63 is one of the best books ever written, perfect world building,
Oozes atmosphere and authenticity, the plot is engaging and you just feel like you are living aside jake epping, facing his myriad of challenges. And the another point: it is so GOOD while being a “modern king”. I have all his books. Like many I too think his older works are generally better,
Yet I absolutely love that in 2011 he again delivered such an amazing masterpiece of a book! I love it
I am currently reading 11.22.63 (loving it!!) & then IT as my July challenge, Stephen King books. The 2 books will have a combined total of about 2000 pages, about 5 of my normal length books!!
King's 11/22/63 got me to read him after dismissing King for years. I was duly impressed. You won't be happy to hear this, Gabby, but the Mr. Mercedes trilogy were my next best favourites. I am going to tackle the Gunslinger books next.
Will be watching this video again come Halloween time, this was so fun to watch!
Good morning gabbi happy Thursday morning and I loved your vlogs and you are amazing Supporter and I'm proud of you
"I will not feel shame about that mall pretzels." One of my favorite David quotes.
"Gossip is the devil's telephone. Best to just hang up." That's my favorite Moira Rose quote.
I’m sorry I’m not gonna be mean, Gabby I still love Carrie and remember Stephen King was a young 20 something almost 30 something when he wrote this college professor and everything and the religious bits are Stephen kings comments on the intolerance of religion
I actually like listening to Stephen King‘s as an audiobook rather than reading it physically
Love the video Gabby! Also, you look super cute today! Your hair is so pretty! ☺️☺️
My top 5 books:
1) Different Seasons
2) Skeleton Crew
3) Night Shift
4) The Stand
5) 11/22/63
Stephen King's strength is in his short fiction, not his novels. He has a well earned reputation for beginning a story, but not finishing to any satisfaction. I wonder if that's a reflection on his love life?
Since you don't like a lot of King's, check out Robert McCammon. Boy's Life is coming of age, small town, with some horror elements.
He also has his version of The Stand called Swan Song. I haven't read it yet (soon) but a lot of my friends Love Love this book... like book of the year book.
Enjoyed your tier ranking and glad you laid out the inevitability that we all have unique tastes in and experiences with books.
I love Needful Things (sort of a companion to ‘Salem’s Lot), but I prefer Different Seasons to Four Past Midnight. I’m also a big fan of The Green Mile and glad you’re willing to give it another chance. I know you were initially put off by Paul’s UTI, but it really is pretty much only in the first book and is critical to a couple of subsequent developments in the storyline.
Another to consider that’s not on your TBR - The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Happy reading!
omg please read joyland on a reading vlog, it’s one of my favs and for me painted such a good visual in my head
1922 was sooooo good. but I also really loved Dr. Sleep😃
Stephen king got me into reading a few years ago with he Dark Tower Series, it was hard to get into at first but it’s a staple for sure
Agreed. The Gunslinger took me a bit to get thru
Please do a reading vlog for Billy Summers! I have it on my TBR and can't figure out how I want to prioritize it :)
Billy summers is a great read definitely one of kings best
My favorite is Geralds Game and I feel like it’s so underrated!
11/22/63 was also my favorite!!! I was shocked at how much I ended up liking it. I also really enjoyed The Outsider and The Shining. Wasn’t a huge fan of Carrie or The Stand. 🤷🏼♀️
I 100% agree on your placement of Pet Sematary! I grew up watching the 1989 movie in the 00s and I was obsessed with it from the get-go! As soon as I had any interest in reading, Pet Sematary was my first Stephen King book and has remained my favourite ever since! I highly recommend reading Four Past Midnight, and I definitely recommend you read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, which is a fantastic short story that I never see anyone talking about! I'd love to watch you make book vlogs about Cujo, I've recently read it too and would love to hear someone's first-hand opinions on it.
Little sad with some of your ratings
For instance I personally love Carrie
I am someone who got their period very early in my life and knew nothing about it like Carrie
I didn’t have a breakdown in a shower room I was actually pretty calm
But I did think something was wrong with me
As well as I am the odd one out in my school dressing very boyish and liking stuff like horror which most people find weird (I have been called a psycho or sociopath a couple times)
And yes
Sure you can say it’s weird that a guy wrote about a girls period
But one
He wasn’t old
He was 26 I believe when he wrote Carrie
Two
It doesn’t matter what gender writes about stuff like that
From what I know his wife helped him a bit so he wasn’t going off of things he heard or stuff
Personally I don’t understand the complaints of “oh a man wrote it so that makes it weird”
It’s a natural thing that happens to girls so yk
It’s not like “it’s rare to get a period” no everyone gets it at some point
The whole “males can’t write things about female characters” is stupid
I write stories myself and most characters are males and I am a female
If that’s the case with males can’t write females than females shouldn’t write about males
It’s just something I wish you worded differently or had a better excuse cause honestly that’s not a good excuse and it’s a bit of an annoying one
But of course I respect your opinion
I do agree the religious stuff made me uncomfortable as a non-religious person myself
But I just wish you worded it differently
As for Doctor Sleep
I personally loved Doctor Sleep the movie I have not read the book
From what I heard I think a lot of people liked the movie more than the book but honestly I wish people would hate less on it cause a lot of people I met doesn’t read the book or watch the movie cause a lot of people hate it
Of course I respect your opinion again!
I just liked Doctor Sleep the movie
I like Rose the Hat as an antagonist cause we need more female horror antagonist
I haven’t actually read the Shining yet it’s gonna be one of the last books I read cause that book is thick- but I’m excited to read it than read Doctor Sleep
Also once again about how he writes women
I’ve seen many women writers write their female characters like that
In fact a author I love writes female characters a lot like that
If it’s a opinion on it’s a man writing it again I would reword that or try to find a better excuse cause once again it shouldn’t matter if it’s a male or female writing the characters
Respect your opinion
It’s just reword it a bit better
Other than that great video!
I love The Shining book, John Torrance is was more likable in the book which makes what happens super tragic.
Jack Nicholson is not a bad actor at all but he has absolutely no subtlety or nuance in my opinion. And even though I love Shelly Duvall, Wendy in the book is a much stronger mother to me.
This is just my opinion of course. I don’t hate the movie, there is definitely merit to preferring the movie over the book. I think the book just hit me greater
Jack Torrance* excuse me
You need to do a podcast like this with your sis on Stephen King films. Compare to books you've read??
Oh that's a great idea
I had to think about this because Under the Dome would be a ride of a reading vlog because it's some of his best world building, but literally has one of the worst endings. It didn't ruin the whole experience for me, but I personally love a character focused, well built small town vibe, which is one of SK's strengths, so take that as you will.
Under the Dome is very daunting though because it's close to The Stand and It in length, so if you want a fun, quick read like Later, Joyland is a solid pick. Needful Things is also criminally underrated and Castle Rock is, in my unpopular opinion, superior to Derry.
I am with you on Castle Rock. Derry is interesting, but Castle Rock is a giant little universe of epic storylines in a small town. So many of King’s best works are Castle Rock located.
I only read IT and I just wish somebody else had written it. Totally agree with everything you said, I love the concept and the friend group but I DONT need to read about Teenagers boobs and that one scene... 👁👄👁
Oooo try Under The Dome! I thought that one was really good even though it was long. Also, I didn't see it but try From A Buick 8.
My absolute favorite Stephen King book is Rose Madder. I also loved Gerald's Game, It, Pet Sematary, Dolores Claiborne, and The Stand.
Love the way you set this up. True horror frightens me but love his other work. Loved 11.22.63 and The Green Mile.
Carrie, I definitely see where you're coming from. It definitely does feel "ew, David" when he's writing about a teen girl and her period...I re-read Carrie in August 2020. I loved it. As an Educational Assistant, the bullying at school hit me in a new way. Carrie's mother definitely has maybe PTSD from the death of Carrie's father. I just felt for her in a way that I never felt before. I love this quote: “People don't get better, they just get smarter. When you get smarter you don't stop pulling the wings off flies, you just think of better reasons for doing it.” I liked the writing style of having newspaper clips, interviews, new reports telling the story. I mean the book talks about the danger of isolation, and I read it while we were isolating during Covid, so that was interesting. It also blows me away that this was his debut novel. I couldn't help but wonder what it would have been like to read this in 1974.
I appreciate your insights. And unless I’m mistaken, SK was younger than Gabby when he wrote Carrie, so not actually a “creepy old white dude.” LOL! Plus, he was a young teacher, so maybe he saw bullying and the impact it had on students inspired some of the story.
The Outsider is fantastic! Would love to see a vlog reading/reviewing that one.
Also, holla @ the Stephen King/Schitts creek crossover
11/22/63 is by far my favorite!
Salems Lot is one of my favorite Stephen King books, but I love vampire books and movies.
Hi Gabby! I have been reading King since my cousin gave me paperback copies of Carrie, ‘Salem’s Lot and Night Shift when I was about 8 years old in the mid 70’s. Yes, I am old now and it was totally inappropriate reading material. Since then I have read pretty much all of his books and short story collections when they were released. I think the issues you have with some of his books are a generational thing. I have gone back and reread some and was like “ew” at some points. So I totally get it.
I definitely recommend Skeleton Crew and All Dark No Stars for short stories. I LOVED Joyland, not so much horror but great vibes.
Happy reading!!!! 😊📚
Joyland is a great one-sitting read if you like mysteries. His writing of women in this book is way more bearable than Mr. Mercedes. The Mist is also interesting if you have like two hours to dedicate to it. Don't stop in the middle or you'll hesitate to pick it back up again. It doesn't mean it's bad, I just think it's hard to have one location and a main character that is sort of flat. Byt I highly highly recommend Joyland. I work in a bookstore and that's my second-most sold SK novel almost every single month.
I agree about the Shining - I'm afraid animated animal bushes are not scary, and water hoses definitely not. The movie knew where the scares were.
You missed out on the introduction of a great character by not continuing on through Mr. Mercedes
I love Dr. Sleep but get everyone is different. I thought Rose The Hat was a great antagonist and the scene with the baseball boy was unforgettable. Totally agree though on Elevation.
I absolutely loved Pet Sematary! I’ve also read The Green Mile and Misery so far, and I’m currently reading Salem’s lot
i definitely preffered the shining as a book because i remember loving it and being pretty scared while reading the book and being very bored while watching the film. however, i both read and watched it so long ago, like it was around 10 years ago and i'm 23 now so my taste changed a lot since then
I've read all of SK's book backlist except for a couple of limited edition/out of print short story collections and a non-fic about baseball. My personal favorites are: The Talisman, Bag of Bones, Duma Key, and 11/22/63.
The talisman is such a great read have you black house
