In this video I will give you a detailed look at how I made a game from scratch, using the Unity game engine during Ludum Dare Number 40 (huge game dev event where you must make a game in a week end) !
The theme was : "The more you have, the worse it is..."
By the end of the epic week end I had come up with BE YOURSELF, a reflex based game with an interesting message !

8 months ago actually :) ! Ludum Dare takes place every 4 months.

Awesome job Noa! I had to bow out of LD40. I attempted to make a roguelike where the more gold you were carrying, the less you could see your environment. 9 hours before the end of the compo I decided I was unhappy with my 2D artwork and switched to 3D and just ran out of time. My custom engine had some bugs in the 3D code I had to work out and that ate up too much of my time. Congrats on finishing and I really dig your art style, so keep working on it!
Thanks :) ! This ludum dare has motivated me more than ever to keep creating and improving :) ! I must say that making a custom game engine must of added a bunch of difficulties (but also more control) ! Still it was great that you participated and I wish you the best of luck for you future projects :) !!

When I saw the start of this video, I got the idea of: a general top down shooting game where everytime you miss an enemy, the bullet will stick to the screen and make the border smaller, also if you touch the edge, you would lose
Now that is an awesome idea :) ! I hope you'll be bringing that concept to life and if you do, send me a link to play it ! Cheers :) !
Sorry, I'm not skilled enough to do that yet... But maybe in a few years I'll come back to that concept

I participated in Ludum Dare last weekend aswell, though sadly, I didn't manage to finish the game with my friend. Everything was going mostly smoothly for the first day, but then it all started to crumble. I spent 5 hours making a spawn system that I changed to a better, easier to manage alternative I could've done at the very beginning, Blender to Unity import problems, animation import problems, the fact that I nor my friend had any prior experience with making music and sounds, and the list goes on. We plan on finishing the game regardless, and it was still a very awesome experience, because I proved to myself I can work on a game for full two days with motivation and actual desire to work on it, with turning down friends' offers to play video games. Welp, at least I now know what to focus on in the next few months.
Also, the game looks pretty neat, though I noticed the games you made in the last few months are very similar in art style and the general feel to them. Not saying they are bad, certainly not, but I recommend creating something you're unfamiliar with, both on the art and programming side. It'll be tons of fun and you'll learn a lot in the process.
Hey Novacti :) ! I'm really glad to know you gave LD a shot ! I'm sure next time you'll complete the game and anyway, as you said you learnt so much just by putting in the time to participate and create !
As for me, I personally feel this game was quite different in style, but it's always hard taking some distance from ones own work :) ! I am however currently working on a game called the fire of belief which has a very different look and feel to some of my other creations :) !

i just found you and i was amazed of your games i all played them to end. they are good.
Should of also had the middle one have emotions depending on the amount of “negativity” attached like with the earth planet.

Great question :) ! That could actually be a cool tutorial topic ! In the mean time you simply need to switch the UI button TRANSITION from color tint to ANIMATION :) !

Thanks :) !! I just wasn't happy with where the game was going, LD for me was an opportunity to try out new and interesting things :), and my first game idea wasn't really new or interesting from a gameplay perspective :) !

Yes being positive is extremely important, it basically comes down to practise, meaning that by "forcing" the mind to think of happy, optimistic, positive things we will slowly but surely focus mainly on what is good rather than what is bad ! And obviously being yourself is key to being happy :) !

Since the gold slimes can stick to you, can they stick to each other? If so, what happens when a gold slime reaches the edge, does it remove all black slimes on you?
I made it to 194 on first try. I will never play this game again. Good effort.
Awesome game! I still dont understand how people do these in such a short amount of time....
Great idea but what if you add a point in the score when the player reach it suddenly all the black dots around him disappear like smoke and the environment change gently with a change in games speed or other factor of the hardness of the game

This was my first Ludum Dare and I was able to rope in a few friends. We're pretty new at this but we had a blast. missed opportunity of making the 'destruction holes' the ears of the charakter
if the black goo balls are supposed to be bad influences, why not try to make them go in one ear and shoot them out the other
and shooting them out the other can clear your ears free of those influences clogging it up. which whould additionally reward the player for skilled play, and actively help with the gameplay, rather than relying on randomly spawning yellow balls

Im wondering, since premade things are not allowed in Ludum Dare, but is it then legal to use engines like rpg maker and construct 2 since they kinda have premade code

Hey :) ! I'll definitely think about making that ! Seeing all the comments i'm getting on 2D, I'll most probably start a series on how to make top down 2D shooter in Unity :) ! (which of course will have character movement in it)

How did you do? We came 460th out of 3000+ .. Though our gfx did come in 160th.. so that was nice.. a nice placing for our first ever attempt.

ah cool.. ours was pure pixel art.. i never like the look of DRAWN characters in games.. they always seem a little cheap.. i liked yours though.. but then again.. im a big fan of ed's work.. this looks like a lot of his older work... a lot of people started copying his style when he got famous.. it looks cool and is super easy to recreate.. im surprised more people havent straight up stolen all of his ideas.. PEWDIEPIE's latest game called POODIE also copies ed's style MASSIVELY!!!
