How did I grow up in the 80s/90s and not hear of Swell Maps til the last year. This shit changed my life. They should've been an mtv explosion- mean that as a compliment bc mtv only poached the best. Anybody know the story why they split?
the main reasons for swell maps imploding was the usual musical differences and different ambitions I.e Nikki wanted to be as famous as the Rolling Stones or something whereas rest of the band were seemingly quite happy being as ‘big’ as they were. plus on this final tour Nikki decided he would rather hang out with a girl he had met than continue with the tour bringing a sudden (pun intended)end to it and a final nail in the coffin for the band which was already falling apart but really it was better the band ended when it did and become the legend it is today with a perfect discography than dragged out to shit which may have well happened. instead each member continued to release great records in all of the bands that followed - jacobites, tv personalities, these immortal souls etc.

What a treasure! This is what archaeologists call a "sensational find".
Truly one of the best bands of the 70’s
Magnificent band. Splendid noise. My people.

A joy eternal.
They had some fans in the Emsland, NorthWest Germany, bought myself copies of Jane and Marineville of Jane in Groningen...

I don't wanna sound antagonistic because yours is a nice comment, but I have to take issue with 'MTV only poached the best'
Curious oif vocal sty;e influienced by Mark E Smith or vice versa. anybody know??
Really not influenced by Mark E. Smith. The Maps had been playing in some form since 1974.
It was the spirit of the age.
So disappointingly quiet
Edit: I’m trying to turn it all the Way up
This is punk.
There’s like 5 people in the crowd😢
