I truthfully hope I'm still open and not too jaded by the time I'm your age to continually seek out new music, and I have 40 years 'till then. Big ups.
I discovered mayer Hawthorne in 2011 and have had him and or Tuxedo in the rotation since! Always! An original in our era, preserving such an authentic soul/funky energy in music today. Not a lot of new artists we’re doing this when he came onto the scene. Forever a fan! 🙏🏽🙌🏽👌🏽
I just discovered this artist. This song is soo Steely Dan. I can't get enough of it! So many amazing songs in the style of music I listened to growing up. It's like he is continuing to write some of the great songs that didn't get written back then.
Wow!!! The New Dance Show, Henry Tyler, and that corny Colonial Merchandise Mart commercial, what memories that brought back! TV 62 WGPR and Channel 68 WHPR!
I just heard this yesterday in Nordstorm's Cafe and immediately started bobbing my head while I was in line to the beat. I immediately knew this was from the 70's, but which artists or group though. I took out my phone tapped the music recognition icon, and this guy's name popped up. At first I thought my the app misheard, so tried again and again his name kept popping up. I looked up the guy's name and saw a picture of this him and see that he is white, so I started thinking my phone's has to be messed up. I then saw that there was a music video for the song. I played it and I was very surprised that this was the very same song. I would of bet big money that this song was from the 70's and that the guy singing was black. Good to hear and know that artists today are bringing that old school sound and vibe into the 21st century.
I also know this song from Nordstrom, but Nordstrom rack not Nordstrom cafe. Also though the internet was wrong. Had to be a 70s song. Finally realized what was going on.
Just discovered this clip, such a throwback they dug up and captured the old school style and flavor with a seriously hot cut. I'll be playing this video over and over.
I was watching this video today on VH1 Classics and thought; ''man amazing music, why all the good music must be old, i wish i could go out these day's and can go nuts on this music...'' So i types it in on Ytube and almost can't believe it was made in 2011, that brings me joy! Still sad that we can't go out in this style these days.. :(
This was great! It brought back so many great POSITIVE memories. Several of the dancers have passed and it was good to see them alive and dancing again! Thanks for the video!
This is such an awesome feel good jam. Doesn't matter how bad of a day your having or how horrible your life is at that moment. You can put this song on and forget about it all.
This reminds me so much of allee Willis. My aunts partner for twenty plus years and basically my second aunt. I love you allee, i miss you. I will never forget you, and your influence on me. and I’m glad you and Mayer got to meet before you went off to boogie wonderland. Two Detroit legends! God bless
I love this song! Good rhythm flow to it Love the video clip... Suits the song... Go Mayer! Awesome white boy singer all the way frm Ann Arbour Michigan..
I grew up one mile across the international border (Windsor, ON Canada) from Detroit MI and watched RJ Watkins and the New Dance Show all the time. I always wanted to be on the show but I was too young. So weird to see it used in a Mayer Hawthorne video. Lol
At first I wondered, "What the heck is a 25 year old episode of The New Dance Show (a real show BTW) doing on here?" I'm from Detroit, and had been looking at episodes of TNDS and The Scene (its predecessor), and thought it was some kind of mistake. Then I realized this WAS the Mayer Hawthorne video. Then I wondered what does this guy know about The New Dance Show? I looked him up and saw that he was from Ann Arbor, Michigan. I guess TNDS was a big influence on him.
Mayer Hawthorne is so under rated.
Agreed
Insanely underrated
Going into 2024 with this beauty
This gives me nostalgia for a time I was never alive in.
WHERE HAS THIS MUSIC BEEN ALL MY LIFE?
parents showed me this song, absolute gas. love from the motor city
This is what is missing in our lives, a club which people just go for dancing and real music.
I've wanted a club like that for my whole adult life.
You're so right! People need a place to blow of steam so they don't do stupid shit
Exactly my sentiments, homes
WOW, LOVE THIS!!...64 and still discovering great singers!..life's great aint it??
I truthfully hope I'm still open and not too jaded by the time I'm your age to continually seek out new music, and I have 40 years 'till then. Big ups.
Life's Beautiful Baby!
If you love music now, it wont leave when you get older!..love Two Door Cinema Club and Bombay Bicycle Club, too
Thanks man. You made my day! : )
Yes Indeed.
I love that Mayer Hawthorne feels 70's throwback, and this is from the 80's lol. Pure awesome
All these folks are senior citizens now. Let that sink in

This song is soo Steely Dan. I can't get enough of it!

if you wear a cape to a dance party you instantly become the man
you must be as big a tube as this guy , what an arse !
He was notorious for the capes. I loved watching the New Dance Show.
...or when you are lazy, then you are super lazy! 😉 ( super man / woman) 😝
I can confirm this
I totally forgot about the commercial at the end until I found myself singing along. Unlocked some childhood memories there. Love this video!
Wow!!! The New Dance Show, Henry Tyler, and that corny Colonial Merchandise Mart commercial, what memories that brought back! TV 62 WGPR and Channel 68 WHPR!
I could listen to this song 24/7. A great vibe indeed.
AMAzing vibes .. love it… how comes this artist is not known in Europe….😢

This is very creative concept. Grew up watching shows like this and the Scene. Pure Detroit. Great lyrics on the song as well.
I can watch this clip over and over again

This video is a CLASSIC!!!
Video comes from this classic Detroit show "The New Dance Show." You can look it up on wikipedia.
i love these vintage videos , this must 've been between '87 and '90 . anyway , brings back some goooooooood memories. peace.
I've been listening to this song for two years and it just now occurred to me that this song is about Detroit.
This song makes me feel like I'm stuck in a time machine that I never wanna leave
Just discovered this song. Maaannn! This song hits all the right notes. I could groove to this all day.
This reminds me so much of allee Willis. My aunts partner for twenty plus years and basically my second aunt. I love you allee, i miss you. used to party hard on this back in the days, nostalgic shit right here
It is hard to believe that this was an ordinary Saturday night for those champs for years!
I have great memories of this show and its predecessor, The Scene. #Detroit famous.
What was the name of the show, and year it was on?
Blackula is the man!!!
Since l heard he's first song I haven't stopped he's number one in my book!!!
Somehow all of these dorks are cooler than me.
That's so funny brother, but sort of true nowadays 👍🤪😆🙏💚❤✌
nah its just all the cool people are the dorks now
this song is awesome.
Peace family. Raise your hand if you used to watch The New Dance Show on a daily. This brings back so many memories. Too funny :)
Young Soul train poppin!
Detroit is booming. The heart and soul of America and not a phony bone in it's body.
Awesome song, great vibe, new skool old skool
I grew up one mile across the international border (Windsor, ON Canada) from Detroit MI and watched RJ Watkins and the New Dance Show all the time. I always wanted to be on the show but I was too young. So weird to see it used in a Mayer Hawthorne video. Lol
I love his music 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great music and the dancing makes me want to have a party, now!! Thank you Mayer!!☺️🤓
Sweetness that finds your soul & hugs to it!
Quality sound and quality lyrics. Wish today had more of this! Love this song! :D
I just found out about this great artist last week at my sister's house and now I am hooked trying to check out all his stuff. 🎶🎵
This was Detroit's version of Soul Train in the late 80s. I was young AF lol but loved it.
Carte Blanche - Gare Du Nord ; also uses soul train footage.
This is not actual footage, right? How can the host say it is a Mayer Hawthorne song, if it was recorded in the eigties?
You can tell his mouth is saying something else, It's definitely edited.
I used to love watching the New Dance Show
At first I wondered, "What the heck is a 25 year old episode of The New Dance Show (a real show BTW) doing on here?" I'm from Detroit, and had been looking at episodes of TNDS and The Scene (its predecessor), and thought it was some kind of mistake. Then I realized this WAS the Mayer Hawthorne video. DETROIT IS LOOKING SHINY NOW!🕊👍🏽
I am a product of the ‘60’s and dancing down the line of my friends at school dances was something we loved.
I can't!! this video and song are too amazing!!!
Cool vintage sound, it shows a paradox of funk: it makes your butt move as it stops time, it heats up the room as it freezes memories.
goddamn...u shud b a critic...lol
+Seth Cox nailed it!
Thanks, too kind :) - or wait, was it meant as insult? Just joking ;)
3:10 this nerd is on fire
❤️ he has a great voice!!
Just discovered Mayer..😍
Give me some dance music baby, R&B style 💥💫⚡️ ohhhhh💋
62 here .....love this to death.!
I cannot adequately express what a fantastic concept for a video this is! I am grinning so hard I think my face is gonna split!
I too have the biggest grin on my face as I watch the younguns. Reminds me of "Sooouuuul Train."
So damn proud to call Detroit home.
