Its funny that the thing about Rising Sun that you didn't like is my favorite part of it. The bluffing combat system behind screen is so exiting and its so thrilling trying to guess what your opponents are going for. 😅

And that's great! Not every game needs to be made just for me :D Love that there's variety and I learned a good lesson from Rising Sun about my own tastes in game mechanics and (ideally) back better now because of it :)

Reichbusters is among my favourites of all times still. It's not a game to play every day, or even every month, but when you're in the right mood for it, it can be truly AMAZING. Yes, it take almost 45 minutes to set up. Yes, managing the enemy in the last third of the game can be a pain (but I've become really adept at it). But the way you get into a room, play your combo of cards and kill 7-8 enemies to the cheering of your team... it's just so satisfying.

Massive Darkness: I kind of gave up MD, but for Massive Darkness 2. I have the upgrade kit and so brought all my MD monsters into MD2. All the things I didn't need in MD can go away, but with the upgrade kit, you can use a lot of the good things from MD in MD2, and I love MD2!
Bloodbourne: do you have someplace where I can see/hear your house rules? I agree with your assessment of the timer mechanism and randomness. I would love to know of some of your modifications (and of others' modifications) to make this better.
Zombicide 1.0: Just like Massive Darkness, I use the different zombie types and twists in my Zombicide 2.0 (or whatever is the latest and greatest) games. I would never play a straight Zombicide 1.0 1st Season game by those rules. Things evolved. But I still love and will play Zombicide by rules that are more of a culmination of Zombicide through the years.
Great video. Got me thinking. I can see falling out of "love" due to over-playing a game, but, for me, if there are alternate rules/house rules that enhance the game, I still love it and will play it.

Interesting take on games after some time. Maybe this is a thing that we should all do after a while, to check if we still like some of our games or we just like the memories they gave us.
SFB is one of the best skirmish games published that is relatively short and packed with action. When you first play it it feels childish and simple and luck ridden however if you continue playing it with players with a same skill level it is pure joy to play. It feels like a sporting event when you score those challenges. The team play is interesting if you do a random draw of champions, not choosing them, but what you get you try to work with. Sometimes you get a very strong team and you think you will destroy your opponent, and then something happens where the underdog totally takes you on your game and wins it straight away.
I always have fun time with SFB and I will always love the game (I just make a cardboard insert and put all wave 1 and wave 2 champions in the large white box, a deck box with deviders and just kept the 2 red insert for the tokens, it sets up in 2 minutes).
As for the Mythic logo on the box, I covered it up with some electrical white tape and don't see it. I understand how seeing Mythic game can evoke feelings.

"No longer love Zombicide" ?!?!? SHUN THE UNBELIEVER!!!!! - lol. That said, I kind of agree with you. First played Zombicide at a friends house and had a blast (Prison Outbreak/Toxic City Mall) then we moved on to Rue Morgue. I had so much fun I went out and bought retail Black Plague for myself and every Kickstarter version since (except for the super hero ones). I've been slowly grabbing the 1st edition parts & pieces but only to use with 2nd edition. My group now only plays with Abomination Fest + Concentrated Attack and/or All-Out rules with at least one random "special" zombie species. We only win about half the time but everyone says they enjoy it ... possibly because we play at my house & I have a plaque on the gameroom wall "have fun or get out" ;-)

I actually just played Reichbusters a couple weeks back for the first time in years. I had remembered liking it overall, but feeling it was a bit clunky. I actively disliked it when I replayed it though. The clunkiness just really stood out after all these years in comparison to modern boardgames and how they have evolved in just a few years. I found it almost unbearable once the alarm triggered and the enemies activate after every hero turn. Decided to sell it right after. Kind of sad, but I have no desire to ever play it again

I recently bought the 3rd edition to bring home and play with my family during easter. I was shocked at my own "That's it?" reaction after returning to it 😅 you really do evolve when you progress from your gateway games

This was an interesting video, and definitely makes me think on some games I've fallen out of love with. As far as games you discussed (sorry this will likely be long, lol)
Reichbusters is a strange one for me. I passed on the KS (though it was tough) and eventually grabbed the base "pledge" when Mythic had it in one of the fir fire sales. unfortunately it didn't come with the errata pack, so it sits waiting for me to grab one second hand or wait to see what monolith does with it.
SFB is still one of my favorites and I'm excited/hopeful that CMON does well with it. Honestly, if all we get is a full Season 2, that would be enough. The only issue I really have right now, is that we don't know when/if CMON will do anything, and the second wave of characters were all very specialized so while fun they didn't expand the roster in the same way more general use champions would have (imo anyways).
Townsfolk Tussle is coming in the fall, but we plan to play at 2 (probably 2 characters each) so hopefully the player elimination isn't as big of an issue for us. I do wish more boss battlers did a rogue like mode though. Seems like a great alternative to the narrative style many of them have.
I've not played Rising Sun, but I feel you've always disliked the kind of hidden info? Like, we love Unmatched and Exceed, and both of those are lighter but have the same, we both play a card and see what happens. I think you bounced off both of those? maybe I'm misremembering...
Bloodborne, we still love. We house ruled the whole "if you lose a scenario start over" to re-do that scenario, and kind of house ruled the timer (it only ends if we both die while it's at the end of the track), but otherwise it's great. I also am not a huge campaign fan, and the 3-scenario campaign is the perfect mix of one-shot/scenario based and full on campaign for my taste. it was a big selling feature of SALKER last year from AR.
I strongly disagree about the scenario design, and do not think for a second it was "cheaping out" but an active choice by Lang and Shinnall. I happen to love the tile drawing, despite the issues it can cause (we started kind of stacking the "deck" similar to how Claustrophobia has you do, which is another favorite). I actually wish more crawlers did the tile drawing, as it mixes things up more. Though you dislike randomness a bit more than i do I think :)
Zombicide....we originally played Black plague a couple of time and it was fine. I backed marvel Zombies for the same reason you backed DC (I also enjoy playing AS the Zombies and the Heroes) and it really clicked. It's not my number 1, but they addressed every major issue I had with BP.
Anyways...that was way too long. Sorry :/

I completely agree on the SF miniatures game, but the reason they don't feel different is because the designers of the game are bad designers. Look at Unmatched, a VERY similar game but every character feels COMPLETELY different from each other AND they're all extremely thematic. They dropped the ball hard with the SF miniatures game. People on their discord actually did a huge overhaul of the game's characters to make them better which took years and currently they're doing a print-run for it.

    @HarleyFirestorm 10 місяців тому +2

I think with massive darkness its one of the games I won't play very often, but when I do we have a great time playing it, the second one's theme didn't grab me, Zombicide I think has been milked to within an inch of its life, pick the theme you like and only get stuff for that, Black plage is still our favorite to put on the table. I have Marvel Zombeis and it just does not interest me now I have it sat on the shelf and have recently tried to sell it off, but its very expensive and no one has bitten. Descent 1st edition fell out of favor very quickly I found it boring, and the second one never interested me, but the new one is brilliant, I am hoping that Dante is going to be something along those lines with the 3D maps that change.
Also with Townsfolk tussle, I think its good but when you strip back the artwork and theme, it really is an average game, I feel bad for saying that, because even so its a good game,I would never sell it, but its not a game I would play all the time.

Hey dude. I think you missed the point with SFB...i think your main critiscism was feeling like you've seen all the cards before .Did you get any of the expansions or just the core? I guess i can kind of see it getting a bit stale if you have the c0re game. Buuuut..... part of the point with SFB is to become familiar with all the fighters/cards, then use this information within the tightly fought matches to make optimisation judegment calls. This is why the discard piles are open information. One of the beauties of this game is sitting there knowing that your oponent has either X or Y card, (as process of elimination using their discard pile) and then trying to decide which action/gambit to take. It's very exciting.
    Keep up the good work!

With Set up I never really have a problem because I personally Set up the game before my group shows up. For me because of that Separate it with the game play of games.
Descent First Edition is better then Second Edition, the new one I won't even get just because its app based. First edition just had more of a Dungeon delving feel while Second edition felt more small skirmish based.
Townsfolk Tussle is so good, however whenever I play a game with player elimination, I house rule that they can grab another character and put them into the game, because lets be honest Player elimination in any game is dumb.

Out of all the channels I follow you are with out a doubt the only one who gives a truly honest and fair assessment of a game. For me to add a game into my collection it has to fit a certain criteria. First it has to have a theme I really enjoy. Examples being Cthulhu, Sci Fi, zombies and things like that. Second is I want art I truly enjoy seeing. Something that visually immerses into that world. Third I want choices of characters to be with lots of replay ability. Storage and set up time are factors but can be overlooked if they are not excessive and the top three criteria are ment. Last but not least price. It seems as tho we are at a time where almost every game coming out is hundreds of dollars to get everything. That seems ridiculous to me but that's just my opinion. My favorite games that I still love are Cthulhu Death May Die, Marvel Champions, Shadows of Brimstone and Maximum Apocalypse. I feel for the money and what you get all of these are great games. Maximum Apocalypse is a great example of a game where as they got bigger listened to the customer feed back. I own all of them and love each and every one when I bring them to the table. As they made new ones they made changes to fix complaints like set up time and fixes for the older ones as well. I feel like they don't get the love they deserve especially in a time where game developers are releasing games now with broken mechanics and major mistakes and just don't care. I just ordered Fallen Land 2 nd edition and I am very excited to get this one to the table. Keep bringing us the great content my friend. I truly appreciate it.

I have quite a few that are on this list: Joan of Arc, Reichbusters, Zombicide, Massive Darkness, Rising Sun and Bloodborne. I do not have Super Fantasy Brawl, Townsfolk Tussle or Descent as none really appealed to me. I tend to agree with you on most of these. I probably will end up getting rid of Bloodborne. I still really like Rising Sun but I do tend to prefer Blood Rage or Ankh over it, so it rarely gets to the table even though I painted the whole game. I still like Reichbusters (also painted which may make me more inclined to be positive about it) quite a bit as well but the caveat here is that I have to set up the game before everyone arrives since setup takes way too long. This is my same issue with Joan of Arc (although I made a decent storage solution and step up does not take me 3 hours - probably does take up to an hour though). I was getting ready to get rid of my Massive Darkness when they announced MD 2, which I wound up backing. I will never play the original again but do use allot of it for MD 2.

Im still enjoying bloodborne. I think it captures the video game quite well. I will defend the timer as it keeps the stakes high and helps negate farming. I think its a bit silly to restart the entire campaign but easily ignored.

Interesting how interests change over time. Of this list the only 2 games I'd played before are both games I like. SFB which is a great pick up and play game with an easy to learn hard to master feel to it and Bloodborne, which I backed without even knowing it was an IP. I really enjoy the board game although I will admit I still have one of the expansion boxes in the shrink wrap but I've played through most of the core box thus far and am sure I'll have more plays with it in the future.

I think a lot of it comes down to play group as well
As I said often I find no one willing to challenge Shinto placement and that kind of breaks the game down sadly

I also really liked Bloodborne the BG… but, it didn’t have a great rulebook that needed an errata right away and houserules on top of that I felt it needed too. Good game overall but I had to get rid of my copy as well.

    - Where is "Masters of the Universe: Fields of Eternia" ??????
I thought you would add it to your list. Are you still as enthousiastic about this one ?
"MOTU: Battleground" is awesome, but FoE was such a disappointment for so many players... I am genuinely interested on your thoughts about this one as I have it on my shelves but hadn't the chance to play it yet due to it's bad reputation 😔
    - I unfortunately agree with "JoA" : juste the same feelings as you. At first, I fell in love with it, then I couldn't bare anymore set up and tear down 😒So I just sold it. What a pity !
    - I do enjoy "Super Fantasy Brawl" a lot.
    - "Bloodborne the BG" : I still love it ! My main issue with it is the constant respawning thing for monsters. I can pass over it, but it feels less epic to know that each and every monster you slay will spawn again in the exact same spot a few turns later. Other than that, I love it !

I wanted to like Bloodborne the board game, but my biggest issue with the game is the timer and rushness of it. I love the video game so much and I just wanted more from it. I ended up selling my all in pledge that I painted. I should have played it before painting it ha.

I have Joan of Arc and like the game but yeah….. hate the set up. It can take an hour to set up. I know that if they were all painted and based that would speed things up but I haven’t painted any of it yet.
I’m thinking of selling Bardsung, trying to sell Trudvang Legends so far no takers.
Don’t own any of the other games you mentioned.

As for Zombiced I rather prefer 1st ed with some of the rules mixed in to what ever scenario I wanted to set up. I could never get into 2nd ed and my group says about the same thing. Black Plague is the preferred version my group likes to play. I would have to think of games that I loved but no longer. I think the one that comes to the top of my head is Dead of Winter. I just remember when that first came out I loved to play it but for some reason someone mentions it and everyone just go nay...

Now that Monolith owns the Reichbusters IP, I am hoping they can fix all the issues. I still play Descent 2nd Edition; my gaming group and I cannot stand the new FFG Descent and will not touch it even if given to me for free. It obviously does not come out as often as it did, but at least once or twice per year my gaming group gets the itch to play if for no reason to talk about the great gaming sessions we all had with this game. Decent 2nd Edition is never leaving my collection and I believe FFG did it a disservice with the current version of the game.
Joan of Arc is awful. The implementation is awful, the rulebook is terrible. I have taken all the miniatures and purchased a miniature skirmish rulebook and proxy miniatures for the wargame. All the cardboard is stuck in a box never to be seen again. Sadly, because of all the issues and IP fights, it will never be fixed. It was a waste of money and after that game no longer wanted to back future Mythic games products.
After I purchased Zombicide Black Plague and the expansions available at retail, I decided I had enough Zombicide. I no longer want any more Zombicide. We usually take it now around Halloween and play in the fall using the many scenarios CMON released online.

I'll say the first one specifically, but only because I never loved the 2nd one. I just feel like my tastes in the games I want to play have shifted away from that style somewhat so no real love lost by the time 2 came out. I was dumb and bought it all but ended up giving it away.

  • @johnh8292

What’s sad is that I own quite a few on this list- Joan of Arc, Descent, Zombicide, Massive Darkness and Reichbusters. None of them make it to my table much any more, although Massive Darkness’ components work in MD2 with the upgrade kit so still getting use there. I’m selling off my Zombicide stuff ff but the market is not too strong. Joan of Arc setup can be mitigated a little bit if you glue the figs to the bases and then store the base assemblies in an organized fashion and use some Plano boxes for the tokens. But I just found the gameplay to be kind of underwhelming overall, despite how good it looked on the table. Hard to sell that one off too due to the size of the boxes. So probably stuck with JoA for now. Will probably keep Descent for the minis for other games.

Zombicides was a trailblazer for fun, plastic crack a decade ago, but similarly, other games have come along that are better.
With respect to Bloodborne, I still hold it in high regard because of some simple house rules. However, I'm a whimp and don't like the demon souls series, so I'm a bit detached from the IP.

They way you talk about rising sun sounds like you played a diffrent game. Why would you be blind guessing in rising sun? Your suppose to announce money before bids. I would agree it seems some starting factions are a bit more useful then others. But definitely able to play to your factions strength. but having the right faction helps. Like the faction that can play any tile can always get betray if needed

Thanks for the great video, I think this is true to everyone in the hobby. As the collection grows and you go out and play more, the things once loved might fade. I love how Townsfolk Tussle made the list, a boss battler where one wrong move or roll can kill you....wait, don't you play KDM? 😉 My same thoughts on Bloodbourne, I'm thinking of working on a map book like Elden Ring, moving along a dedicated map space makes way more sense. I think the timer track needs to be a moon cycle track that the player needs to manipulate as an exploration / boss fight mechanic.

I like the game and traitor mechanics, but everyone I play with hate it.
