- It's time for our annual timelapse of the past year. In this video we look back on September - September (plus a bit extra!). This year hasn't been easy and I'd be lying if I said there weren't times we wondered what on earth we were doing here, making our lives more complicated by living this way and trying to build a homestead from scratch. There have been (many) days where I've said "Why aren't we just living in a flat, near a hospital, with clean running water and central heating?!". There have been (many) days it feels like we're taking 1 step forwards and 10 steps backwards here. There have been SO many abandoned projects, things falling apart and hard work gone to waste. In short, it has not been a great year for homesteading. But it has been a great year for something far more important. And putting this video together reminded me of how much we achieved, in spite of everything. I hope you enjoy 💓

What hard workers you two are. I love your personalities. You may have troubling times, but you both are pretty calm. The house is looking warm and cozy now. I live in an old house in a small village in Italy. I know damp and draft! lol. I had new doors and windows installed too. made a great difference. I think all the animals help you a lot also. I’ve battled health issues and depression this past year, and your videos are bright spots. Like having tea in a garden with old friends.

What an incredible year for you! Some of the things you did before Santi arrived seem like a lifetime ago...I was surprised that the goat shelter was built within the year, for instance. Your home is so much more comfortable now. I wish you all the best health and happiness in the new year!

It's certainly been a very unpredictable year, but it's now in the past, wishing you all good health, some fun, and definitely find a way to look back at all you've seen and done. Soon you will have to teach Santi to climb stairs, which may require a barrier to keep him falling over.
Just knowing you have a healthy child, a warm place, and the future will give you some contentment.

I can't believe it's been a year since I found your channel! Thank you for this lovely video. You two (now three!) are amazing people. Have you ever considered doing plastic bottle construction? You use empty plastic bottles and concrete infill so you use less concrete. Some friends made a waist-high garden wall this way.

Dear Harriet and Mauro you are really wonderful guys! You do difficult business and do it interestingly. I enjoy seeing your videos. My wife and I hope one day will follow your steps on an off-grid path. But please do not keep the little Santi under the butt before he sits because it could be harmful to his spine. The best way to carry this little angel before he sits is "tiger on a branch" or "cradle". Saying it as the father of a 10-month one. Sorry for the unsolicited advice.
If you ever come across a three legged ladder buy it. I worked a apple orchard and that's all we used to pick apples.

Well I never what are the young generation coming too I didn't live off grid but I also had a long day living in London travelling one and half hours to work 7 and a half hours per day rushing home taking the 2 dogs for a walk feeding and putting the 2 girls to bed started at 21 hour to decorate all the 12 rooms in my house and working on the garden plus ballet dog walks and children entertainments on wend mostly all by myself I look back and am proud of myself I now have a house in austria with robots cleaning before I wake up ..loved both of my stages in my life ..keep going its not hard

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for you all. I’ve watched all of your videos and followed the journey of your pregnancy and arrival of little Sante. This video filled in a lot of gaps that your regular videos didn’t really show. What you have both achieved is amazing, especially when you consider that you’ve all had surgery this year and little Sante arrived 10 weeks early. It’s lovely to see how he’s grown and how he seems to have seamlessly fitted into your lives at the farmstead. Thank you for this video and all of the others through the year. Harriet - re: volunteers.
I think you need to just make clear what tasks the volunteers can expect and make sure it doesn't make MORE work for you. If you are upfront about tasks, the volunteers can take it or leave it.
Assign them your DAILY tasks. Having them do those tasks will give YOU time to focus on projects and not have to do any organizing of materials & tools for the volunteers. Most farming volunteers are there to get an idea of the various daily farming tasks like:
feeding the animals - even the dogs and cats
weeding
planting seeds for seedlings in the poly tunnel
transplanting seedlings
watering plants and trees
turning compost
hauling manure, kitchen scraps, and dry plant material to the compost bin
I have even seen volunteer farm jobs that include a bit of child minding and dog walking
dish washing
Seasonal tasks as well:
harvesting
canning produce (most people have no idea how to do this & they would find it fascinating - give them a jarful to take home with them)
drying produce
Of course, if you are in the middle of a project and need an extra hand with simple tasks, like mixing concrete, staining wood, carrying rocks (or any tasks that involve MINIMAL training), you could list that on your volunteer description as well. 10 hours of work a day is not unusual for a farm volunteer. Always keep in mind that they are volunteering to help you first and foremost. Pick tasks where you can quickly train them then let them get it on with it.
