They had to prove something the first few concerts, oh, of course not to the Rush fans, but to themselves. The energy that the crowds give them helps throw some levity to all the problems leading up to the shows. I’ve been to a few Rush concerts where I wish there was more excitement from the front rows, I mean you’re in the first few rows at a Rush concert, show some signs of life. 😂😂😂 The best crowd responses I’ve been part of were both on the GUP tour and were my two first concerts ever. The Fabulous Forum and Irvine Meadows.
Love this version...the tempo is dialed in and the performance is flawless really...I think they knew how on fire they were on the road that led to R30 tour being created and back out there a year and a half later. This song just outside my top 5 all time at #6 🤘
I always felt that Freewill was the defining Rush song but didn't know how to explain it accurately. Then I saw these guys in Rio for one time only bowing down during the solo. I Got chills. It explains itself.
Alex is on fire here, for me this some of the best of Alex Lifeson, he absolutely needs to be mentioned with all the great guitarists. Love the crowds reaction, goosebumps on this one. Geddy's range is off the hook, a Rush song is not a Rush song without Geddy singing, nothing compares; bold statement but it is my opinion. Freewill, definitely a favourite, among many, many favourites. Glad you are watching and reacting to this amazing concert Justin, there is still greatness to close out the first set and the second set takes it to even greater heights. Enjoy!
It's amazing they were still able to play the song at the same tempo as the studio version. They really tore it up. I can't help but think back to those days when Permanent Waves was first released. It was the dawn of a new decade and there was a sense of optimism in the air, replacing the hedonism, cynicism and malaise of the previous two decades. And Rush seemed to be the perfect flagbearers for it. I get emotional thinking about those better, vanished times while I'm currently stuck here in this evil dystopia. Jesus.
What many forget is that this was the last date of the whole entire f’n tour, and it’s after flying all the way down there, plus all the hellish technical difficulties and obstacles faced to to even get the show and audio + video recorded. They are in their mid 40’s at least here, and they are still fucking kicking ass and taking names!!! Out-fuckin-standing performance here, the whole damn show!! Magical shit right here!!
One of my favs as well!! I think they were SO STOKED by the audience… it had to just make their performances even greater! They are so in the pocket!! Be well and God bless.. from Texas!!
That high vocal part Geddy seemed to nail right up to the last tour they performed it. Something about that octave that never gave him a problem, at least not in this song.
"Freewill" is arguably in the Top 10 of Rush songs under 8 minutes! 😉 Not only is the music fantastic, but Neil's lyrics are spot on!! And how many other studio albums can claim a better opening 1-2 punch than "The Spirit of Radio"/"Freewill?" ✌✌
Alex often sings the background on this live at least in later years. If you ever react to Rush in Toronto during the "Sarstock" festival Alex's mic is really loud for some reason on Freewill and you get to hear him in all his singing glory ; )
@@lindaward5376, it was, until he heard Dog Years. People joke about Rush's mediocre efforts, but I'd take even their worst songs over anything a band like Kiss did. That stuff was complete garbage.
Wow. This concert was the rebirth of Rush. Heavy growl bass. Geddy hitting notes again, a refreshingly excited crowd. Everything about this concert blows away any Rush concert since the Moving pictures tour. How come more people don’t recommend songs from this concert? I think it may be the heavier tone after 2 decades of fan’s emasculated with songs like Mission, and virtually, etc. So disappointing.
Perfect song where they each do their own solo in the middle. Fantastic. This version in Rio is pure energy!
Exactly! The three piece solo is fire! Each one of them ripping it up and then the come down back into the song, crowd goes wild every time
On freaking point. The exchange of energy between band and audience is everything here. Everybody won.

I can imagine. based on the concert vid the band was at the absolute top of their game on that tour.
Imagine waiting 20 years for your favorite band to play on your continent! It looks like it was very emotional for that audience. WOW!

This is the one song that fights me for #1 most favorite Rush song... It's hard to pick your favorite song, when so many of their songs are so good!!

Love this performance. Each of them really shine on their respective instruments.
Again- the crowd goes bananas- bowing 🙇♂️ to Alex and Geddy during the solo break- my favorite of their entire catalog. It never gets old. Brilliant.
Fantastic! One of my favourite Alex solos as well. Love the audience ❤

My favourite since I was 12 years old, when it came out. I agree.
Love that part…that’s awesome!
The guitar and bass parts for this song are very cool, but Neil is off the charts. 😳 A lot of Brazilians went home happy.

Timeless absolutely timeless, if I hadn't heard it a million times i would think it was new. bloomin awesome song, I love everything from PW
Fire song! 🔥 This audience is an example of one filled with only Rush fans. No Johnny come lately’s at that show. Awesome!
I really forgot how good this show was and how it sounded. So damn good.
These three guys are as dependable as you get for a great show. We’ll never see the
like again in my lifetime. RIP Neil Peart!
I go between Freewill, Xanadu and Natural Science for my favorites. Great performance. Thanks.
Ur right, vocally Ged still had it, which is why I loved this period of Rush with this live show and Vapor Trails, the band was on fire!
Alright Geddy Alright!!!
Alex sang occasional backing vocals in the 70’s and 80’s and again in the 2000’s

The audience is also singing backup.
Justin (My Favorite RUSH song all time but just below the incredibly epic: CINDERELLA MARK) Panariello 😁😁😁😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😛😛😛😜😜😜😝😝😝🤘🏻🤟🏻🤙🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Nice to see you smile so much! :)

Friggin awesome! Definitely top 5 Rush for me (most days)❣️
This guy has still got it! (GEDDY LEE) eh?!
What is the crowd doing the Tomahawk during that song?😂 yeah, they nailed it🔥
🤘
Maybe my fav too, although the best live version is 81 Montreal for me.
This is the only song that I know of that pokes agnostics in the ribs.
Moo. Still grazing in your field. (dropping an occasional patty, but that's to be expected) 😜
This is your favorite song by Rush...so far...
In my top 10
Ditto
7 or 8 killer songs in..have we heard a single mistake yet from anyone?

Here I thought his favorite RUSH song was: CINDERELLA MAN 😁😁😁😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😛😛😛😜😜😜😝😝😝👍🏻

Actually, I thought that Tai Shan was his favourite. 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

When geddy could still sing 😊
