One thing this piece doesn’t seem to mention is that Barbara was more connected to the Columbia disaster than just damaged tiles on her flight. She was actually scheduled to be on the next flight of Columbia in November 2003 (STS-118) before the mission was remanifested to Endeavour after the accident. She was also apart of the chase team (Astronauts that serve as airplane escorts and monitors that “chase” the shuttle during landing) on STS-107 which was the Columbia accident. It must’ve been like Challenger all over again when she and the fellow chase crew realized that Columbia wasn’t coming back… She was around NASA for both accidents and chose to carry on and fly, her lesson of perseverance shows in her actions. Not to mention she took flight on the very orbiter that was built to replace the destroyed Challenger.
I remember that Day too. I was in my Senior Year of High School in a DECA Competition when the 1986 Space Shuttle Exploded. We happened to have our Competition at a Mall in Saginaw , Michigan. We were walking past JCPenney's Store & they had a TV there & we saw at that precise moment that the Space Shuttle Exploded. Fast Forward. Years later . I lived in Texas. An Hour from The Houston Space Shuttle Center. And Fast Forward I became a School Teacher too. A Special Ed Teacher for High Schoolers & Middle School. And I love Space & NASA & Space Shuttles, etcetera and the Space Shuttle Missions. So, we would talk about Our Special Teacher from Idaho Barbara Morgan. Going into Space..I am a Fan of yours . From one former School Teacher..to Another . You are making History & part of Big Historical Events & Women In Space & on The Space Shuttle , & NASA. .
as bad as i feel for christa, i am glad that Barbara got a chance to live her dream and come home too, i was 4 years old when the challenger accident happened, i remember the columbia tragedy in 2003
I never even knew the alternate Teacher in Space went to space in 2007. All I remember is the Challenger disaster and what a huge tragedy it was. Still makes me sad all these years later.
I didn't even know the Teacher In Space thing continued either. That tells you what the media was focused on. Negative only... I showed them and turned them off for good before it was a trend in 2011.
