In this Suzanne guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this beautiful fingerstyle acoustic classic by Leonard Cohen in it's entirety.
On the original recording, Leonard Cohen played a nylon string acoustic guitar in standard tuning. I will be using the same setup for this video lesson. However, feel free to play the song on a steel string acoustic as well, it will still sound great.
The entire song is based around just four different chords. There is also a repeated fingerpicking pattern used throughout 95% percent of the song. If you can play that fingerpicking pattern across all four chord shapes, then you can pretty much play "Suzanne".
However, there are a few variations on the picking pattern that Leonard Cohen throws in there as well. I will cover those slight variations in detail so you can play exactly what he plays if you wish.
Towards the end of the video lesson, I will break down the entire chord progression along with how many times the picking pattern is played for each chord. You may want to write it down as I go through it.
After you get the long chord progression memorized, the entire song is simply that exact same chord progression played 3 times in a row.
In any case, I hope you guys enjoy learning some cool fingerpicking chops while playing this beautiful song by the late great Leonard Cohen. #suzanneguitarlesson #leonardcohen #guitarcovers
Carl...
If you have problems with the rythm/measure of this song: The intro is in 6/8 and when Cohen starts singing he changes to 4/4. This might help.
I stared trying to learn this by ear last night, from my smart phone speaker no less. I thought, “how hard can this be” but when I began to listen closely and notice the intricacies of the picking pattern I thought “hmm maybe I’d better see what UA-cam has on this piece...”
Very clear, concise, and approachable - thank you for sharing your gift, sir.
For people without classical guitars and who are having issues with the barre chords, try tuning the guitar down a whole step and putting a capo on the second fret.
I love to play guitars, electric, folk acoustic, and classical. However, songs like "Suzanne" become almost like personal gifts when rendered softly on a classical guitar, sung softly the way Leonard Cohen could. Mr. Neil Diamond is another composer/singer who comes to mind in that genre, and I must state that for me, they're both my principal inspirations for learning to play guitar and sing their music. Being able to do that has gotten me through some difficult times in my life.
This is the second song I’m learning on the guitar, thank you for your tutorial it helped me a lot ❤
This is definitely helping as my time and energy permit. Just now I watched without guitar in hand, just to absorb it. I've got the gist of it and all the beginning patterns. And now that I'm thinking more tangibly of the patterns, I'll listen to the original recording again soon to confirm in my head when and where he makes the changes. Anyway, thanks!
THIS WAS BEAUTIFULLY DONE THE LESSON.KEEP IT UP.U REALLY DO GOOD LESSON.
Thanks for a great, easy to follow lesson! Have been wanting to learn this song for a long time, as I always felt it would be a very calming, peaceful song to sit and strum and sing along with. One of my favorite songs of all time!!
Thank you! It's easy to follow your explanations. Beautiful picking
Thanks for the beautiful lesson! Just made it my goal to learn this song over the next month :) I've always hugely loved the songs of Leonard Cohen and especially his finger style. After seeing him doing it so fast and seemingly easy it looked like something I could never learn but this video definitely gave me more confidence to be able to play it! (in a decent enough way, I'll never even become close to his or your level but that's not my goal anyway, I just wanna have fun :D) And just seeing myself progress in 10 minutes is so magical :) At some point your fingers just do their thing
Fantastic lesson. Easy to follow!
I really enjoy when you play your classical guitar, it's one of the reasons I recently got a classical myself. Thanks Carl, great tune.
beautiful song, thanks for this lesson.
Awesome tutorial Carl! and just the song I was looking for a decent lesson! Thanks :)
Nice lesson. I remember this was one of the first milestone songs that I learnt when self-teaching guitar.
Definitely good to have a video on it since it's a little tricky when trying to remember it off the top of my head.

You look like Ryan Reynolds... Good lesson! After learning Suite: Judy Blues eyes for the past two weeks this one was easy to pick up. My fiancé was named after the song and her dad wants me to learn it. Thank you for making that happen!
best lesson ever, leaving nothing to guessing. thanks!
At last...your new classical..It sounds pure. Hope to hear more public domain classical guitar appropriate pieces.
Te amo, gracias por las lecciones. Exclenete
Great lesson, thanks
Great Lesson!
Good lesson - this is slightly more complex than the pattern that I've been playing... Good tip about the change to A - I must remember to take my time over that.
BTW, the intro' is in 6/4, the verse in 4/4, and the coda/chorus/whatever is in 2/4. So says my Leonard Cohen Anthology, anyway!

Excellen lesson- one small correction: on the A chords I'm pretty sure the plays D as melody note, not F#. I just listened to the original all the way through & that sounds like the note (Asus 4).
search "Suzanne guitar lesson drew" to find a guy named drews channel, he teaches that part right. other than that i think this lesson is the best one
