Free boat! My dad bought one for dirt cheap, that when he tried registering it, they found out it was stolen in 1968 in Ohio. The original owners didn’t want it because it requires a lot of fees and travel to get it, and my dad was allowed to register it under a new number..

Legal question: Would the reporter have been allowed to leave a tracking device on that boat and monitor if it went to the address of the registered owner? I mean, if it's dumped it's not private property anymore, right?
It’s a public street? Can’t it be towed in 72 hours of being abandoned by police? Especially with no tag? How does it sit for 2 month? Unhitched trailer in street with no tag? That should be gone in days....

Sorry. I don't see a boat. I do see trash/old furniture/green waste that should not be on the sidewalk. Did the house burn down there, once upon a time?
And a story that wasn't just reporting an issue, but actually working to solve it. That reporter deserves an award (assuming she came up with the idea)
It's a problem, boats are waste that are hard to get rid of. If someone came up with an inexpensive or free solution, they'd have a solid business. The problem is the fiberglass, there's just not much you can do with it. I know a business I will keep to myself that will often take them but they can only handle a few. I get free trailers in exchange for disposing of people's boats. I think one solution for disposal would be satirical reefs. Get an inspection from the coast guard to make sure all hazardous materials are removed and sink them in approved zones. I hate to propose regulations so maybe incentives to stop making fiberglass boats would be better. Reduced or extended registration on wood and aluminum boats? Maybe increased registration for fiberglass boats to fund a disposal program?
@@darthdaddy6983 I don't know if it would have a very good R value. It's a simple idea though, definitely something that could easily be experimented with.
Most of those are purchased from a showroom floor and the owner is clueless how to take care of the boat. I think this is a 26' foot Sea Ray. A solid hull. You don't rebuild it the way it was. You customize it.
You didn't read my above comments. I don't have to "think" about doing this. My brother and I have "done it" seven different times. The boats are brand new and completely customized when finished. I don't care what you want to believe about labor or costs.
This has become a hobby we can make some decent money doing. My brother and I are sports fishing guides in Canada. We don't work during the winter months, therefore whatever labor we provide is essentially free. Depending upon hull size we can create a boat for just about any kind of fishing, whether it's used for inshore salmon or offshore tuna. Buying a brand new boat is so expensive these days, and of course after getting some use out of it the, I wish I had this or that list begins. We add the this and that based upon experience.
I believe what you're doing is much more difficult. It sounds like you're more into restoration, where finite detail counts. Of course we want nice looking boats, but we're more into function. No detail is too small when it comes to safety. The fun comes when you completely rearrange what the intent was of the original builders because they're limited to a large variety of uses. I started my boating in a rubber raft with a wood floor. I graduated to the old 18' 6" Boston Whaler. In fact, we still have one. It's my mothers go fetch the mail boat. :)
