The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse (German for "special class", abbreviated as "S-Klasse"), is a series of luxury flagship vehicles produced by the German automaker Mercedes-Benz, a division of German company Daimler AG. The S-Class designation for top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models was officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, and has remained in use ever since. Mercedes has been using the two battery setup in the early 2000' in the sl class and later started intergating it into the S-class, CLS, and various other models.
The Starter battery is supposed to completely isolated from the consumer battery and is designed to start the vehicle even if the consumer battery is almost dead.

The S-Class has debuted many of the company's latest innovations, including drivetrain technologies, interior features, and safety systems (such as the first seatbelt pretensioners). The S-Class has ranked as the world's best-selling luxury sedan, and its latest generation, the W222 S-Class, premiered in 2013. As in previous iterations, the W221 S-Class is sold in standard and long-wheelbase versions; I4, V6, V8, V12, diesel and hybrid powertrains are offered. All models built in Mexico or sold in the United States are only available in long wheelbase.

My 2001 SL500 has a dead battery and starts fine with a jump-pack but cuts out as soon as I remove the jump leads. Is that likely to mean both batteries need replacing?

I am confused about the 2nd battery in the trunk will it automatically charge along with the other one or do I have to do anything to it thank you
The both charge when the vehicle is running however if you are charging at home you need to charge both batteries separately using a trickle charger.
Do u need to change both main and ax battery to get car to start
It depends on your benz. If you have two big batteries then than just change then aux /starter battery as it will have enough power to crank the motor. If your aux battery is a much smaller battery that is designed to supply the computers while the motor is cranking so the voltage doesn't drop. Did you try charging the batteries?

Hey bro. I have a 2008 S63 AMG. Sedan body. My car has not been started for 2 months. I've been away. I'm trying to start it up now but I can't. I've charged the consumer (back) battery and no luck. I've charged the front starter battery and also no luck. Can you charge the front and back consumer battery both at once?
Yes you can depending on the charger. How many amps is your charger? I recommend testing the batteries with a load after it's shows fully charger because you be ready a surface charger on the batteries. Let me know if you need any recommendations

Yes, there is a small drain and when left uncharged for months the batteries will decay.

How do you know what battery to replace
A battery load tester is very helpful in determining that. Don't buy a digital load tester, buy a mechanic load test for around $20.
Does the starter battery actually start the car
The start battery, itself has enough power to start the vehicle if the main battery is weak.
Was the battery light on? What were the symptoms of a dead starter battery if the consumer battery is ok?
The light was on and I didn't notice anything else.
